Capcom really is the king of character designs in general. They had so much talent work there. Bengus and Yoshikawa are probably my favorite of their team.

The awful Toriyama character designs are one of the main reasons I never played Chrono Trigger. Frog and Robo don't look terrible, but every human he draws looks the same and they're all awful.
>no SNK

You really should play CT, great game.
Great taste by the way. BoFIV's designs are fantastic. Yoshikawa is a phenomenal artist.

It's good but suffers from pretty bad sameface.

I did try it eventually when the DS port game out but never got very far. Not really into JRPGs in general anymore and it didn't sway me. Actually BoF IV is the last RPG aside from Etrian Odyssey that I ever finished.
Do you think characters have better designs in modern games than they did in /vr/ games? In the old days with sprites you couldn't communicate a lot of detail clearly, so even the artwork had to reflect this and keep it pretty simple. But now with 4k 120 fps graphics the sky's the limit on character design and they can make them look like anything, even down to the texture of their panties. I find myself liking modern characters a lot more often now just because of not only how detailed they look, but also they have more interesting personalities with motion capture and good VA work.
The Shining Force games
The Mega Man X games
Rival Schools
Cool Cool Toon
Beast Wrestler (it's a very shitty game but the monster design is great)
Hagane
I like the Japanese delinquent look. Here's these school kids acting like they're all badasses but it works.

I think older designs are better, in regards to both East and West. Eastern designs were cartoony but in a classic sense but had a good broad appeal, think Mario and Megaman. Western designs were often more gritty or realistic but looked good without being too over the top or edgy, Doomguy and Mortal Kombat's earlier designs. Even then both were also more diverse, East also had cooler more "realistic" designs like Solid Snake and the West also had sillier cartoony designs like the Lemmings and characters in LucasArts adventure games. I enjoyed the diversity and experimentation designers had in the 80's and 90's. They're was bland stuff too. In the East a lot generic anime styles and in ttheWest a lot of conan the barbarian / he-man kind of action heroes style that was popular in the 80's. There was saturation but there was so much more creativity.

>The Mega Man X games
Shit taste, anon. The Megaman X designs look like child drawings, with overdesigned characters and fucked up colors.
Sigma is the worst offender, but Zero is also pretty bad.

I actually agree. The designs for the first three X games are fine, X1 has great designs, but around the PS1 era of X it got a little extreme. The classic series still has great designs.

Wasn't he originally designed to be some heroic good guy bot? The bright snappy colors would work for that, but then he got corrupted.

Yes. His story is that he awoke Zero who when being built by Dr.Wily was infected with a virus. Zero was eventually cured but Sigma became infected during this period when Zero was first awoken. Before the virus Sigma was 100% a good guy. Basically, in a way, Wily sort of is the main villain of the X series as he was the one responsible for creating the virus despite being long since dead.
