Sharp pixels appreciation thread

Post beautiful screenshots of beatiful games with beautiful sharp pixels

CRT and filter fags have their general thread, and I know they're a minority, so I don't see why not.

Sharp pixels = grew up with emulators. Or no retro material at all.
Shaders, CRT and RF/Composite = grew up with the real thing

So do I, most of the house is tidier than that room which is mostly for storage. I keep my CRT in there because I don't actually want to get rid of it, but don't want to look at it all the time either and Saturn or DC are the only things I ever use it for anymore.

pixels look good on screenshots, but in motion they make a game look choppy, at least on my setup, so sometimes i play with bilinear(can't stand shader or scanlines, shit is so fake), sadly it looks like ass on screenshots.

"i want to go back to the way things were" is a desire that cannot be fulfilled. same with "i want it to be the way the author intended". you cannot return to the past or divine authorial intent. those are delusional pursuits. the only thing you can do is accept things the way they are now and play the games the way they look good to you now. if the sharp pixels look good to you, play it like that. if it looks better filtered, play it filtered. if you like your crt, use your crt.

what you don't want to do is buy into the delusion that there's a "real" game experience that something is preventing you from accessing. the gap between the actual game you're playing and this phantasmatic "real game" cannot be closed no matter what you do. look at the guy who's like "well you have a crt but it's not a PROPER one, once you buy a PROPER one...". this is not something that ever ends. once the crt is PROPER it will be something else that's wrong. the gap will never close, you can only learn to live with the gap.
>>
>>3997717
Believe it or not but this was exactly the point of this thread. I am sick of CTRfags coming to shove their "the way it was intended" in every single thread.

I knew they were going to jump in this thread to troll and insult, like all the other ones, so I just wanted to put a mirror in their face to show them how they really are, and that no, they are not a "majority" who teach the "real path" to a few lost sheeps.
Instead they're like the annoying religious biggots who come knocking on your door to try and convince you of the "real faith", and they don't even realize it.
This shit derails every thread, and even their containment thread isn't enough.

>what you don't want to do is buy into the delusion that there's a "real" game experience that something is preventing you from accessing.

It's a lot of young people trying to experience games like they were in an earlier time. But it's also impossible.
>>
>>3997730
>"the way it was intended"
There is no way one can argue that its not true, stuff was made for them in mind.

THAT SAID, people do take CRTs like some sort of sacred cow and get assblasted when someone uses an LCD. I prefer CRTs but I'm happy to see people play retro shit any which way. The more people that get in to it the more alive shit is. Its a good thing.

On anther note, considering that many CRTs are aged and do look like shit (usually caps going bad or the flyback), I do wonder how many people think that CRTs look like shit because they've only seen old worn out ones. You kinda have to go out of your way anymore to have one that dosn't suck. Because of this issue, LCDs are a better option for most.
>>
>>3998254
>stuff was made for them in mind.

The game were made, and then displayed on CRT TVs, that's a fact yes.

But that doesn't mean that every game took into account the flaws of CRT TVs, like the stretched aspect ratio or scanlines, to design the art of the game.
>>
>>3998248

What irritates me is people who claim they want the "authentic" retro experience yet shit on everyday CRT's that are freely available all over and seek out and spend a week's pay to get a PVM, motherfuckers that wasn't your experience growing up, none of you had a broadcast or medical monitor in your home so shut the fuck up about it. It's just as artificial and sterile as using an LCD.
>>
>>3998260
it largely does though, it's ignorant to believe otherwise.
>>
>>3998270
I fell for the PVM meme, fortunately mine was free, but I recently got a nice 13" trinitron from goodwill and I started using that over RF instead. Way less hassle, more fun, and it's not a grey aluminum cube, which is always nice.

>>
>>3998260
Maybe not every game ever, but many did.
Be it the plethora of Genesis games that used dithering along with color banding on NTSC RF signal to create granet colors and quazi transparency. Or like 4 way scrolling NES games hiding the scrollback of the video buffer with the screen's over scan.
>>
>>3998270
Keep in mind who they are. They're trying to re-create something lost. Which even if they were gamers in the retro era is impossible because it's simply no longer the 80's anymore. There's a desperation to it all and that's why you find it so annoying. But it doesn't have to affect you if you. Just recognize it for what it is, and enjoy games however you want.
>>
>>3998282
The Mega Drive is hardly unique in its use of dithering. The technique is still used today while RF is long gone.

I have a PVM and fell for the meme too, seriously it is so razor sharp I might as well be playing on an LCD with scanline.png over my game.

What was nice about the everyday TVs we grew up with is the shadowmasks gave some texture and grit to the picture which "tricks" the eye into thinking there is more detail in the pixels when there is not. Trinitron aperture grills still have some of that nice toothy detail but the PVMs and BVMs are so well defined they almost look like PC monitors.

Compare these two images, i'll take the one on the left anyday, while technically "inferior", the glow from the phosphor is more realistic and the fire in the letters actually looks like real fire instead of a pixellated mess.
>>
>>3998270
Yeah, the PVM thing drives me nuts. NO ONE owned these till the 2000s. They were crazy expensive and for specialty use only.
>>
>>3998304
>Compare these two images, i'll take the one on the left anyday

This is what it all comes down to being personal taste and why infighting about it is so pointless. I get why you would choose the one on the left, but to me it looks far worse than the one on the right which itself to me doesn't look amazing.

I think if we can all just accept that we don't necessarily like the same things and live with it instead of shitposting each other all the time things could be much better.
>>
>>3998304
Pretty much. It is the phosphor pattern that gives the image its look, not the tube itself. As you say, there were high resolution crt monitors. When I first started playing emulators it was on one, and the extreme sharpness of the pixels bothered me even then.
>>
>>3998304

So you've discovered the difference between a Trinitron display, and a display with a shadow mask. You probably prefer the shadow mask because you didn't grow up watching a superior XBR crt.

I pity you. You nostalgia for crap.
