Why were Playstation discs black?
>>
>>3994721
Big Black Discs
>>
From what I understand, as a copy protection measure. The PSX could read them just fine, but the optics of many computer drives at the time did not like the altered reflectivity properties *at all*.

>>
>>3994721
PORTABLE NUT
>>
>>3994736
It has nothing to do with the color of the disc. PlayStation discs have corrupted sectors burned into them that the PS1 would check for. If they weren't present, no boot.
>>
>>3994789

Oh, I was aware they also used shit like corrupted sectors (then there's the infamous "libcrypt" which does bullshit to the subchannel data in blatant violation of the Red Book Standard), but I thought I recalled Sony thinking the black discs were a good anti-counterfeiting strategy and that it would mess with cheap optics in disc drives as well.

I'm pretty sure "the underside of the disc is BLAAAACK!!!" is rather worthless as branding strategies go. As an extremely primitive form of pressed-disc validation it might be somewhat more successful.
>>
>>3994728
Underrated
>>
Because Sony make music CD and Game CD on the same factory.
>>
CDR have many color back screen in the market.
but we not have any color back screen on DVDR.
>>
>>3994764
This. This is the only reason. They looked *x-treme*, and that was all.

They didn't add any copy protection, or any change in the reflective characteristics.

>>3994789
That was done only in later games, once modchips were common. Originally the protection is just wobble on the pit groove, which is put there in factory and cannot be duplicated by CD burners - but the result can be mimicked by modchips. I think it also had some ATIP protection but I don't remember anymore (and that could be duplicated; wobble could not).

Wish granted.
I can also add that one of my dad's friends modded his PSX and burned games for out family before the PS2 was even announced. He always wrote PSX on the front of the discs.
>>
>>3994981

All of this is photoshopped.
>>
>>3994827
I've never heard anyone irl call the PlayStation a psx. I hated reading it in magazines in the 90s and you purist fags acting like that was commonplace to refer to it as such outside of EGM either had no friends or you take gaming "journalism" way too seriously.
>>
>>3994990

spoken it was never abbreviated in the first place.
Noone said "Pee ess" neither "Pee ess akkkes". it was simply the "Play Station"
>>
>>3995023
So what does the x even stand for? Do you normally use an x as shorthand for "station"?

You realize that just two posts above you had an image showing the major developers and publishers also referring to it as PSX, including an in game screenshot of it, right?

False.

Sony thought it made their discs look cool. Yup, that's it.

There were some CD-R blanks sold with black bottoms as well. Some stupid people even though you could only use those if you wanted to pirate PSX games. Because people are dumb.

BTW, if you are an autist who flips out when they see PSX, I would like you to know that it's one of the reasons I insist on using it. Because every time you make a /vr/ Rainman cry, an angel gets its wings.

No, we called in PSX in the late 90's also.

>>
>>3995648
Ya hear that everyone? Asking questions that could be answered by google is pointless. So everytime you see a new thread ask yourself "Could this be easily answered by google?" And then be sure to rage into the comments and spread your "google it" cancer like you're totally cool and unique, making sure to stifle all discussion about the topic and ensuring no further insight is gained. Because this faggot here says it, and it must be true right?

There's a new thread that says "What's the best NES emulator?" right now. That sounds easily searchable on Google. But I don't know, it's your call. That's a tough one. Are you gonna go spoutin' off in the comments about "google" and "cancer" or not? I just thought you should know.
>>
>>3996081
But there is no definitive answer for "what's the best NES emulator" they all have their ups and downs and it's a real topic for discussion, while "why where psx discs black" has a definitive answer and nobody can argue about that.

Are you literary underage? Most kids I know have a more open mind and understanding of things then you seem to do.
>>
>>3996081

And had you read that thread, you would see that there is no real consensus. So it's a valid topic of debate. There's nothing "settled" about the NES emulator question; no "right" answer.

Which is not to say that there aren't wrong answers. There are ALWAYS wrong answers.
>>
>>3996081
No, I just didn't click on it. I don't care enough to go out of my way to shitpost about this stuff, just replying to this guy >>3995539 and giving my two cents. There's plenty of reason for a chat board besides asking dumb easily researched questions.

I always just heard it called Playstation. The same way no one said SNES, everyone called it the Super Nintendo. But magazines definitely called it the PSX, probably because abbreviating it as the PS just looked weird and called 'post script' to mind. And people definitely used it when writing on message boards too. The N64 was the first console I ever heard anyone abbreviate in normal speech.

>>
>>3997212
made up logic. psx fags started this. Everyone calls it the playstation. that overzealous research is a sign of insecurity. If I wanted to call it the "Genesis 2", do I really have to justify it to anyone? But it gets worse when I try hmm, for example, to force everyone else to call it the "genesis 2", that's some social-retardation level shit.
>>
>>3997217

Except no one is forcing anyone to use PSX. Of course PlayStation is acceptable, if you feel like typing that every time.

But claiming PSX is NOT a common abbreviation in common usage since the console's debut is bullshit. Always has been bullshit. Always will be bullshit. And bullshit should ALWAYS be called out, on general principle.

I tried to tell people this before but they all act like I'm crazy. Fucking /vr/ full of kids who weren't even born yet when the PSX was relevant.
>>
>>3994736
I used to say that was wrong but recently i burned some data on black CD-Rs for my old iMac G3 (2001) and the reader were unable do read them. No problem with regular "shining" CD-R tho.

So this is asolutely not for a copy protection standpoint but I think it might have been a pro in Sony's brainstormings.

iMac G3 used a "SuperDrive", which was finicky on reading CD-R brands, and really didn't care for odd-colored dyes. So it was probably the fact that it was an odd colored CD-R; I'll bet you still could have played tunes off of a pressed PSX disc.
>>
>>3998336
Nice comment. I'll try it out right now and let you know, for science!
>>
>>3997738
>>3998336
Never had a problem though, I used to use black CDs for burning all the time because some of them where more durable.

Also never had problems reading PSX discs for emulators straight from the computer. I think the Mac "SuperDrives" where just crap, I own several G4's and they always came with shitty drives.
>>
>>3998692
You were right the PSX CD was detected and the iMac played the tracks. Still it didn't detect my black CD-R. Comparing them side to side the CD-R is more red (still dark tho) than the PSX one which is more black (with a feint red reflection)
>>
>>3998716
They're not the best quality you're right, but regarding the iMac G3's (slotins drive anyway) they were easily serviceable (lithium grease and new belt)
