I would like to record some gameplay from my old consoles. What's the best capture card with VGA-in? Or at least component+composite? Must be either USB or PCI (not PCI-E). 480p is OK.

Also general capture card thread.

What cards do you use anons if any? Or do you just record your screens for the more "sitting on a couch" feel?
>>
>>3994641
best usb capture i've used is gv-usb2 with amarec

if you want better options you should go with PCI-E. it gets more expensive, but the quality gets higher with the price (sorta)
>>
>>3994641
>What's the best capture card with VGA-in?
Good luck.
>Must be either USB or PCI (not PCI-E).
Pretty odd requirement.
>>
>>3994641
>What cards do you use anons if any?
OSSC + Elgato HD60 Pro.
>>
>>3994661
What's the difference between GV-USB2 and the other china-made USB capture cards? The packaging seems almost the same.

>>3994663
Well I don't have a spare PCI-E in my computer. GPUs eat them all. The last free slot is PCI only other than that it's USB or nothing.

Also I have all my consoles connected to a projector which upscales beautify (https://youtu.be/jCVo2UOzUkM) and already have a VGA-out. So I figured that would be the cheapest solution to capture that output somehow. But I was wrong I guess.

>>3994672
Isn't that a bit of an overkill? To upscale the signal before it reaches the PC? Or do you use the OSSC to also upscale to your TV?
>>
>>3994682
>To upscale the signal before it reaches the PC?
I upscale image to my monitor with OSSC when I'm not playing on CRT.
Maybe this exact Elgato card is an overkill, but I also use it for non-/vr/ purposes.

Micomsoft has XCAPTURE-1 card, maybe you should look into it.
>>
I use a Diamond USB capture device for my PS2, captured through OSB Studio. Haven't really had any problems besides having to do some color correction. It's also nice being able to have it display on my TV at the same time.

Micomsoft stuff is also expensive as hell. I would rather spend this kind of money on a new Everdrive or something.

That's S-Video or composite only, isn't it? No component?

How about something like pic-related? Anyone has any experience with these cheap-ish cards?

I use a Toshiba dvd recorder to upscale 240p/480i s-video into 1080i HDMI, which goes into this thing. Colors look nice and it's decently sharp.

>>3994752
Cards that capture component signal are kind of rare, because back in 2007/2008 they were seen as too expensive, and once cheaper devices started appearing, HDMI overtook component.
>>

No, it has component.
>>

I have the GC500. All 4 of their models seem to support it, either way.

I use an Avermedia card, but it doesn't like the OSSC's off spec resolutions. Recording from the Framemeister is just fine. I have not tested using the XRGB2 yet.

I have been thinking about using the $60USD capture device from China pictured in >>3994772 for a simple solution.

>>3994695
That Elgato 60 is costly for me, but I may have to if I want to capture from the OSSC. I dislike how it abandons the composite support the previous non-60fps capture solution had. (For NES)
>>
>>3994712
I tried a diamond card and it was worthless garbage. No amount of color correction would fix the washed out look. I returned it for an Elgato Gaming HD with the s-video adapter. That one works much better and even works as a simple upscaler with no noticeable lag.
>>
>>3994641
Not the elgato.
>>
>>3994661
So I know the I-O GV-USB2 is a meme choice for s-video and under. I used to have an EasyCap a long time ago and it had absolutely unplayable input lag. Was this because of the EasyCap being trash or is it something all external USB 2.0 devices suffer from?

Avermedia HD DVR aka C027 owner here. I got it in 2011 for just under $100. The software is shit but you should be using OBS Studio or Amarec anyway. I think most people will say it's a subpar card, which I suppose it is, but the best thing about is its hacked drivers, you can bypass HDMI HDCP with it. Are there any other cards that let you bypass HDCP without costing a cent?

>>3997330
Any capture card will always have input lag. Best way is to use some kind of a splitter or record the output from the TV.

>>3997340
It looks awesome BUT
>>
>>3997617
>Any capture card will always have input lag
Doesn't matter, because EasyCap USB 2.0 was like half a second long and my C027 felt only maybe 1 frame late (2 if pessimistic) at 60hz, I actually play all my games straight from OBS besides rhythm games and other nit picky games. I remember EasyCap was unbearable and being pretty upset. I also bought a used Elgato and found out the hard way that it has no passthrough and so the output was like 10 seconds late.
>>
>>3997642
Interesting. As I understand it USB is heavily chipset and CPU dependent while PCI(-E) main limitation would be the drivers (both the boards drivers and GPU drivers).

Anyhow I figured I might even go with buying firewire expansion card and connecting the capture card there. Firewire being the previous video standard I might even find some good deals on used stuff.
>>
>>3998519
Why not a USB 3.0 one if you're going external?
>>
>>3998534

I've looked into it and maybe I will go a completely different way and use some kind of splitter and downgrade to s-video cables and record that.
But that mean that I will have to go trough all the headache with proper scaling and 240p support and such.

Jesus Christ I just want a cheap and nice solution to record my games. What the fuck is so problematic about that...
>>
>>3999374
If it's retro and 240p then just use I-O GV-USB2
>>
PEXHDCAP.

Fuck composite.
>>
>>3997340
I've got a C027 as well and it's not bad at all. I use it with an iScan upscaler and some overpriced component cables and AmarecTV and it's very simple and reliable at the least. I will have to check out those hacked drivers.
>>
>>3999517
Composite has a certain charm if you don't have a shitty upscaler. The video I posted earlier shows my HVC-101 with a DIY cables hooked to a surprisingly functional upscaler and I love the look of it. If I wanted pixel perfect digital I could just emulate the whole thing.

>>4000152
The C027 looks really nice but as I said I don't have free PCI-E slot.

>>3999513
In the end I bought a Pinnacle Bendino for about a 1/3 of the price of a GV-USB2 and also ordered an S-Video cable for the SHVC-001. It will be a downgrade from the SCART tho...
>>
>>4000802
I can't find any information about the Bendino. What inputs does it take and what video modes?
>>
>>3994641
Dont get an USB capture device like the one in your picture, I got a similar one from other brand and image scrolls vertically with most devices specially old ones like my DVR or my PSX. Chances are you get the same result unless you get sure you are getting a good one.
>>
This is a result of Elgato recording Sega Saturn without the S-Video.

>>
>>3994695
Which is better - Upscaling using a capture card setting or taking the raw video and upscaling it in video editing software?
>>
AverMedia Live Gamer Portable 2 + Framemeister

Despite the dumb name, LGP2 is pretty neato. Being able to record to an microSD card on the fly as well as a PC for streaming is nice
>>
>>4002107
This is the order:
Console hardware > Output > Video

I would use my PS2 to do 2x on PS games internally so it's just a clean 480p before it even reaches my capture card. Upscaling your video is so useless because it's essentially just doing 200% zoom on your video player. Plus if your captured video was analog, you are also enlarging all the video artifacts. If you can't upscale internally within the console, then let the external hardware do it for you. The only time you should upscale the captured video is if it was fully digital like emulator.

It looks like it's an old passtrough card with composite and S-Video inputs/outputs. The model should have SAA7113 and ADV7179 chipsets. Anyway it's arriving today so I will try it right away and share my feelings about it. Seems like it's a pretty old card so maybe 240p won't be an issue? Hope the Germans thought about NTSC back then...

>>4001285
Looks retro as fuck desu. I love it.

>>4002189
That's a hella expensive setup but I bet the picture quality is superb. Is it connected to any RGB modded consoles? Care to share some screenshots?

>>4002191
This.
Also remember that when you use analog stuff the less devices you use the better. Also cables matter. Don't use the 50c Aliexpress ones (or do, but open them up and re-solder them).
>>
So the card works (sort of) and supports both NTSC-J and 240p without any problems.

https://youtu.be/mTckB-KORkg
>>
>>4002387
I didn't pay attention to cables and just used whatever Playstation s-video I had previously. I've been using the same cable since launch and never knew that the checkerboard pattern wasn't part of the SD look. So now I'm tempted to buy new ones from Amazon. If someone can give a second opinion on cable checkboard that'd be reassuring.
>>
>>4002191
This is exactly what i was looking for thanks
>>
>>3994641
I'll go ahead and plug the Startech USB3HDCAP. It's the same chipset as the Micomsoft XCAPTURE-1 but much cheaper (you can even use the Micomsoft drivers if you want). It does everything from composite to 1080p60 HDMI, including VGA and 24kHz RGBs. Also, unlike certain AverMedia and Elgato cards, it works well with the non-standard refresh rates used by old consoles, with no noticeable stuttering. It also supports the line-triple and line-quadruple modes of the OSSC if you happen to have one of those.
>>
>>4003918
Just looked it up. How do you personally get around HDCP because it says it won't record encrypted content. It also says under hardware that it uses MPEG4/H264. Does everything get recorded from an onboard encoder or is it passthrough?
>>
>>4003935
>How do you personally get around HDCP because it says it won't record encrypted content.
I have a cheap HDMI splitter that strips HDCP. For most consoles it isn't an issue anyway because the PS3 is the only one that uses HDCP as far as I know (the PS4 does by default as well, but you can turn it off).
>It also says under hardware that it uses MPEG4/H264. Does everything get recorded from an onboard encoder or is it passthrough?
That's only for their included recording software. I use OBS so it's just passthrough.
>>
I have not tried VGA capture yet. I cannot figure out if the sound is any better between the Wondermega and a not-launch model 1 Mega Drive (no AV Intelligent System Multi Purpose Use markings). I think a difference could be heard when the ship coming out of the water explodes.
https://youtu.be/FPFOoG8iACc

I hope to redo the capture next weekend with a launch Mega Drive.

Any good DVD recorders which record 240p?

I want to record my gameplay footage in 240p and I do know that DVDs support 240p (many Chinese 10-in-1 bootleg DVDs are 240p), but I don't know if there are any DVD recorders
which record gameplay footage in 240p.

I also don't know if there are DVD players which output 240p as is without 480i interpolation.

I wanna watch my DVDs on my BVM so it would feel like I was actually playing it.
>>
>>4009383
That's how AVGN captures all of his gameplay footage actually. You might be able to google his exact type of DVD recorder and then hunt it down perhaps...
>>
>>4009387
Yeah, I know.

What I want to know is what kind of DVD recorder supports 240p.

Blu-ray is out of the question since it doesn't support 240p unlike DVD.
>>
>>4009390
Why don't you want to use the same proven setup as AVGN? The Sylvania DVR? These are like 15 fucking bucks http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sylvania-DVR95DF-DVD-Player-NO-Remote-/112413661042

Or use the card I bough few posts above. The drivers are shit and the lag is like 500ms but it sure as hell supports 240p and it's like one extra step from there to burning it to DVDs if you need them so much...
>>
>>4009425
Yeah, but I can't find which DVD recorder as what AVGN has.
Also, does it support recording for component, RGB SCART and S-Video?
>>
>>4009430
https://youtu.be/jfnSqLzUzfM?t=3m45s
How did you find 4chan if you can't google at all anon?

It's an US unit AFAIK so no RGB and no SCART. With most of these you will get S-Video input and these Sylvanias also have component in so quality will be the same.
>>
>>4009454
Okay, he also uses a Sylvania DVD recorder.
Thank you for the info.

But from what I see, none of them have Component inputs and only S-Video at best.
>>
Also, I don't care about input lag since I have a splitter so I can output my consoles to my DVD recorder and directly to my TV at the same time with zero lag.
>>
>>4009475
Sorry, my bad. These have only S-Video in.

>>4009479
Then use a capture card and then burn it to DVDs?...
>>
>>4009482
No, what I meant is that I can just use a splitter and output it directly to my TV so I can have zero lag while I can also output it to my DVD recorder.
>>
>>4009483
Sure but why not record it into a PC instead of a DVD recorder?
>>
>>4009506
I just like having a VCR-esque experience but I do record on my PC sometimes.

What I just need is that it would record in 240p for PC and DVD maker software which could make a 240p DVD since most DVD maker software only support 480p.
>>
>>4009514
>240p DVD
Is that even technically possible? I was under the impression that the format only supports 480i.
>>
>>4009543
Yes.

From what I know, there are some Chinese bootleg 10-in-1 DVDs which are 240p.
240p is officially supported by the DVD profile.

I am not sure if there are any DVD players which play 240p DVDs in 240p complete with scanlines or interpolate them 3DO-style to 480i/480p.

Also, many later DVDs are progressive scan which is 480p.

Unfortunately, Blu-ray dropped 240p video support.
>>
>>4009552
Why not just record on a PC and play the file back on a Raspberry Pi or something that can output 240p?
>>
>>4009567
I prefer DVDs over digital files for some reason.
Physical media is just more comfy in general.

>>
>>4009569

I have a feeling like you are making problems up or you are an extremely lazy individual...
>>
>>4009569
So hook up a DVD drive to a Raspberry Pi? Probably easier than trying to find a DVD recorder that will output 240p.
>>
>>4009605
I want to record while I play.
And I want to do it in the old-fashioned way but not too old-fashioned.
Even if it would be usually recording with a VHS, this time, it's a DVD instead.

I just feel that there's something comfy with recording and playing DVDs as opposed to digital files.
>>
>>4009621
>I want to record while I play.
What's that have to do with anything? You said you have a splitter, so you can record on a PC while you play on your TV.
>I just feel that there's something comfy with recording and playing DVDs as opposed to digital files.
You are aware that DVDs are digital files, right?
>>
>>4009603
I play on a BVM CRT.

>>4009567
>>4009613
Oh well, maybe recording with an XCAPTURE-1 with a 240p output file, converting it to DVD and playing the resulting disc on a Raspberry Pi with a DVD drive will yield better results than using a DVD recorder.

>>4009628
Yes, but what I mean is that physical media in general is more comfy, even if it's something digital like DVD or Blu-ray.

Anyways, my little discussion is over.

Does anyone here use a laptop for streaming / capturing?

I can't get a tower for space reasons; so I'm in the market for a simple PC that's good for video editing and shitposting round these parts.

Also got a GV-USB2 from a friend who doesn't stream games anymore, if that helps.
>>
>>4010541
I do. Any modern laptop should be able to encode SD content in software no sweat. I have an i7-6700HQ and I can even encode 1080p60 on the "medium" x264 preset, though CPU usage gets uncomfortably high at that level. But if you can do hardware encoding (which I think pretty much everything can these days), it won't even use any CPU.

Just don't expect to play demanding PC games and record them at the same time.

The rule with APU is the higher the frequency of the RAM the better the GPU performance. 1600 is hella low. Also ALWAYS use dual ones. Also use WD HDDs. Also 350W power source will be enough. No need to spend too much on that.

I picked up a random chink one off ebay a month or so ago and it arrived today. After throwing the included disc away and installing OBS, I'm now recording an old broadcast from TechTV circa 2000 or so that I have on VHS. >>4013168
He might be set on 240p now but there will be a time when he feels the need to record a 720x480 retro output and so on. Even if you believe encoding via CPU power is "just enough", hardware encoding can rest assure that it won't drop any frames especially if there are no second takes. I learned this the hard way. I'm sure there are budget GPUs that have a video encoder if the APU doesn't. Drop that soundcard and funnel that cash towards it.

In general you'll get much better results using software encoding, especially at low bitrates. Hardware encoding should only be used if you don't have the CPU power to spare.

Chill dude. Shit will be ok.
Also. If you are that much of a newcomer bear in mind you also have to buy (or pirate but that's a slightly harder task) an OS. Use whatever version you are comfortable with.

What computer (if any) do you have now?

>>4013262
Might be. But I bet my ass that APU can encode up to 1080p (60fps too maybe). I don't think you can even buy a new AMD GPU without UVD at this point...
>>
>>4013298
If you are recording gameplay, you're really recording an archive copy that should be as lossless as you can afford. Hardware encoding is the job for that. Whether it's for uploading, editing, or making webms from, you want a high bitrate original so there's no reason why you are using bitrates so low that software encoding pulls ahead. I used CPU encoding before and most of the time I'd risk dropping a frame which ruins the entire recording and I have to do multiple takes. As long as the APU has some form of hardware encoding built in, it'll be fine.

Depends. If you're streaming, you should REALLY be using software encoding. If it's for archiving/editing and you have a huge amount of disk space to spare, sure, the difference isn't that big. Still, if you have the CPU power for it, software encoding will always be best at any bitrate. Sounds like you didn't have the CPU power, so yes, for you hardware encoding makes sense.

My 2500k at 4.6Ghz was incapable of playing Wolfenstein TNO while streaming, or recording PS1 emulation at 1080p/1440p without dropping at least 1 or 2 frames. Low bitrate streaming is dominated by CPU but there is eventually a breaking point. I mean if anything I think we both agree that the guy should buy a CPU/GPU equipped with a hardware encoder because the situation will eventually call for it.

Airbats. 3 episode OVA.

For sure, it's definitely good to have the option. Though, I don't think it's actually possible to end up with a CPU/GPU combo without hardware encoding at this point. AMD and Nvidia GPUs have both had hardware h.264 encoders for a long time, as have Intel CPUs (Intel QSV is actually really good, better than NVENC in my experience).

So wait, can the Elgato HD60 accept composite to any degree?
If so, I'll get that. If not, vanilla Elgato
>>
>>4013503
No, the Elgato HD is the one you'd want. I wouldn't recommend the HD60 in any case unless all you have is USB 2.0. At that price point you might as well pay a few bucks more and get a USB3HDCAP, which is a much better, more flexible card.

I had the regular Elgato Game Capture HD. It doesn't take S-Video unless you buy an adapter for it which costs a fuck ton because it's in german dollars or some shit. I had to groan and moan like a complete faggot to guilt them into sending me a free one. I ended up selling it altogether to make my money back in the end and stuck with my Aver C027. The Elgato failed to capture the full 720x480 frame without some shitty black bar at the bottom.

Good luck finding a new Win7 licence. But if you do, buy that. Compatibility wise it's the best way to go right now.

Mixing game streaming and emulation and just capturing stuff from external source into one post. Are you brain-damaged anon?
>>4013540
Anon already has the USB Elgato tho. That's why he wants to use it.

BTW what's the obsession with such an expensive capture cards if all you need is s-video and 250p? Buy that cheapass Pinnacle that I've bought a few posts above and be done with it. Sure it lags but the picture quality is great and did I mention how fucking cheap that thing is?
>>
>>4013853
I'm talking about how even with a non toaster CPU, it's still not that reliable. Use hardware encoding to get that lossless copy.

Frankly, why bother with a license at this point?
>Anon already has the USB Elgato tho. That's why he wants to use it.
He's talking about "getting" one. Sounds to me like he doesn't have one yet.
>BTW what's the obsession with such an expensive capture cards if all you need is s-video and 250p?
For some people, S-video isn't good enough. Particularly if you're interested in capturing analog RGB, your options are pretty limited.

Anon is a PC noob. We are trying to make it as easy as possible for him to get up and running. But yeah pirate it if you can. Don't give these fuckers a single cent.
>t. person who just spent a weekend trying to get a legally licenced win vista business to at least update a little bit

But a few posts above he said a friend of his gave him one? Or was that someone else?

I'm pretty sure anon isn't a videophile. He stated few posts above that he is OK with that.

Or I might ve completely fucked an lost track of how many people are there in this thread.

This is why you should never give anything for free

Why are you so surprised anon?

Their product page advertised that Elgato HD supports s-video when it didn't within the box, so I called them out on their bullshit.
