Hey everyone, I'm back with a new thread after having nothing to report for a while.

For those who are new to these threads, I'm an anon living in Japan who likes to go to retro stores and hunt for bargains. I started making threads to post my findings and also take requests from anons who are looking for Japanese hardware and software. The way it works is you can send me an email at:

[email protected]

You can also post in this thread.

I will dump photos when I visit the store but you can also look at them here: https://goo gl/photos/EztDSevRyDsLt9xz9

Put a "." in the gap to follow the link. I had to post it this way to get past the spam filter.

For those that have been in contact with me via email I will try to get back to you soon but as there are so many things in these pictures, if you see something you have been looking for and I don't mention it please feel free to point it out.

Now, to commence dumping from today's trip. I finally had the chance to go to a different Hard Off on the other side of town.

I think it's because the PS2 can play two generations worth of games.

I'm with you on prices. It's funny to see a boxed game for 4000 yen and think "that's kind of pricey" then see the original price sticker for almost 10000.

Sorry, I forgot to say this in my last post but I hope you all enjoy the pictures. If I visit a game center sometime I'll make sure to post pictures for everyone here too.

Okay, anon here from a previous doom and gloom "when will the collector's market bubble burst?" thread.

Can OP confirm if its true that almost all retro games in Japan have dried up that's to Americans buying them all?

Like, are there some games that use to be uncommon that are now ultra rare because foreign collectors bought them all? There was someone in the bubble thread that claimed that there was almost no retro market left in Japan and that all the big retro stores are now out of business because of it.
>>
>>3992514

In my country a loose PS2 costs even less then the PS1 in those pictures.
>>
>>3992474
>>3992476
I wonder how much were those Tokyo Yamanote Boys games, esp the limited box.;_;
>>
>>3992741
I think the sellers don't really care if the idiot buying some old video game for 200$ is American or Japanese.
>>
>>3992415
Why would anybody need a Satellaview, since there's no service anymore?
>>
>>3992741
It's definitely a factor. Prices have gone up to match demand from overseas but it isn't hard to walk into a local secondhand store and find some good stuff. It's mostly games that are popular outside of Japan and games that don't require reading that have all the demand.

>>3993154
It's a "paying for quality" mindset. Sometimes it's actually harder to sell cheaper things because people assume they must be bad.

>>3993168
I can let you know next time I'm there.

>>3993189
Novelty I guess? Still, ¥8000 is a lot for a paperweight.

>>3992758
I appreciate it but don't engage them. If they aren't interested in the thread they don't have to stay.
>>
>>3993296
If I buy used console or controller in japan can I test it out before purchase?
It's really hard to find good working Saturn controller and thinking about picking it up when I travel over there.
>>
>>3993309
Consoles probably but controllers I'm not sure. There is usually a place to test electronics in second hand stores but you can always ask the staff.

The employees are also very good about checking things that come in so you will usually know ahead of time if something works or not. I've never bought a controller that didn't work.
>>
>>3992249
Nice price for a N64 there with the box
>>
Not exactly retro, but are there any special, limited editions of the PSP machine itself in any of the stores you've visited, OP? Preferable nothing too mainstream like FF.
>>
>>3992249
Is it worth it to buy that Dreamcast right now? How long do you think it'd last before it breaks down?
>>
did you came across some MSX stuff?
>>
>>3993296
>It's mostly games that are popular outside of Japan and games that don't require reading that have all the demand.
Probably explains why SHMUPs and action games like Radiant Silvergun and Rondo of Bood are so overpriced, since they're only the kind of imports that EOPs can play.
>>
>>3995058
Yes but I can't think of them offhand because I hadn't been seeking them out. I'll try to get good pictures the next time I see some. Anything in particular that you're looking for?

>>3995101
Hard to say but if it was well maintained it could be many years before it needs to have a part replaced. Everything in that picture should work. That wasn't the junk section.

>>3995882
Yeah, anything that doesn't require language ability, especially if it's from a popular franchise, is pretty pricey here too. The price is usually a bit lower than the NA and PAL versions though just because the Japanese version is more common.
>>
>>3995101
I've a few games now (and 2 copies of Ecco in particular) that are exhibiting pitting. My dreamcast itself will occasionally struggle to read burned disks.

My thoughts are that you have maybe 5 more years before a large majority of the consoles on the market are exhibiting signs of failure. The good news is that ODE will likely be available more widely.. as long as interest is maintained. One is in my future for sure, after the Saturn detour.
>>
>>3996718
>Anything in particular that you're looking for?
I don't having anything in particular, but upon a quick look at amazon JP there aren't that many game-specific LE versions of the PSP console, unlike the Vita/3DS. Guess I'll just buy a regular model off of a local shop, but do inform me if you run into one.

ALso I'm so very tempted to get that Sakura Taisen dreamcast, but I'm afraid it'll be an unwise investment since I don't actually have any Dreamcast games lying around. Does that console come bundled with the Sakura Taisen game?
>>
>>3996720
Pardon my ignorance, what's ODE? Googling gives me ordinary differential equations.
>>
>>3997765
Optical Drive Emulator. They're devices that replace the disc drive, so you can plug in a SD card or USB drive filled with ISOs. Basically a flashcart for disc based systems.

For the Dreamcast there is GDEMU and USB-GDROM. GDEMU guy also makes ones for the Saturn and is looking into other consoles like PCE-CD.
>>
>>3992417
how much for that dragon quest controller?
>>
>>3997764
I didn't check but the bundle did originally include the game. It isn't hard to find copies of Sakura Taiwan lying around either.

Whether or not it's a wise investment is subjective since it depends on how much enjoyment you get out of it. In case you want a Dreamcast just for the sake of having one, you can get a regular version for less.

It even had some exclusives like an Ultraman game that's entirely in English. The Horde was actually released with a Japanese dub. The Japanese 3DO is the best version of the console since it supports both English and Japanese fonts plus it's region free.

>>3999371
Yes, sorry but I guess I didn't explain it too well in the OP. The purpose of these threads isn't for me to blog about my life, I'm taking requests from people on /vr/ and posting these pictures to give them an idea of what is available. Just a heads up, I do charge a commission for my time. It's 10% of the item's price (all the prices in the pictures are after tax) plus 3% for Paypal's fee. I didn't account for PayPal at first but I had to add that because it's a lot of time and work for only ¥100, especially if I lose 30% of that.

If you're interested in anything email me at [email protected]
>>
Damn, Japan still lives in the 90s, what a comfy experience you must be having, OP
>>
>>3999531
It's funny you should say that because "I need to go rent a movie at the video store after I fax this" is a sentence you might actually hear in your daily life.

I don't want to talk about myself too much but I'm willing to answer whatever /vr/ related questions that I can.

Hey OP, I've been in the market for a Micomsoft XE-1 Pro for the PC Engine for a while, I was in Tokyo in March and they seem borderline impossible to find, and ones that get posted on eBay tend to be lucratively priced. If you find one for a good price (less than ¥10,000) I'll gladly pay.

I'd also be interested in the Sega Master System / MSX version of the stick, it's exactly the same, except for the connector, and it's labeled the ST instead of the Pro.

Thanks in advance.

Well the model number. Something along the lines of DESR-XXXX.

Not if it's unpasteurized.

Just want to make another quick PSA. I was able to find a Super Famicom plus two controllers and A/V component cable today for a total of ¥1824 thanks to it being 20% off junk day. Everything works but unfortunately I couldn't find the AC adapter today.

Now that I understand shipping better it breaks down like this. I can put everything except the AC adapter in one box and send it for ¥2400. However, even an SFC without the box will need to be sent in two boxes to lower shipping costs. This means the base cost to ship a complete loose Super Famicom with two controllers is ¥3270 but if I can piece one together on junk day I can still find it at a lower price than what you typically find on eBay. However, it might be hard for me to find pristine models at a discount.

Posting what I found today. It's yellowed but works like a dream.

What is this store, exactly? Like, the whole building. Like a used stuff store?

I love the way the building looks.
>>
>>4006619
It's a national secondhand chain that has beaches for pretty much everything. It started with Book Off but now they have a bunch of other branches like Off House, Hobby Off, Liquor Off, Kimono Off, etcetera.

The other big chain is Second Street but there are of course local stores as well.

They market themselves as being "Eco Friendly" but I had never seen so many plastic bags and wrappers before I came to Japan.

As someone who loved thrifting in the US it really is a dream here. Things can be a bit expensive but the condition is great and there's ALWAYS something good.

Super comfy thread Japanon, thanks for all the pictures. I would be interested in giving you a pretty great price for the Salamander and Gradius collections, if shipping them together would be cheaper...! And also compensate you for the favor as well. Scalpers have made these a good chunk pricier online than they are in the wild in Japan.

Either way, thanks for all the pictures, this thread is cozy as fuck.
>>
>>4008178
If you're interested in anything just send an email to [email protected]

I just picked up some Saturn shooters for another anon but there's still a copy of Salamander and the Gradius collection.

Don't worry about making an offer. I'm charging a flat rate of 13% of the item's price (10% for me and 3% for PayPal) plus a box and shipping. Two Sega Saturn games could easily be sent together for ¥690 shipping I think.

I've been looking for Hori controllers for a while. They're pretty rare in North America.

Hey Japanon, I know it's kind of a long shot, but I was wondering if you could keep your eyes out for a doujin Castlevania CD I've been looking for ages.

It's called WHIP RUSH 3!!! and is by the M&K company. It's mainly a rock themed series of remixes of songs from the Castlevania games. Here's a sample of their work.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bk91U7NjYpw

I've managed to track down all the other Whip Rush albums online by Whip Rush 3!!! and would be amazed if you could find it in the wild. I don't know if you'd be willing to rip it or sell it, but, I know it'd make my day if you could find it. It would doubly make my day if you could upload it somewhere too if you found it, but, I know that's a long shot. I don't know if it is of any help, this is the company's website.

http://sound.jp/mkcompany/top.html

Anyway, keep up the great work Japanon, I hope you find some great stuff out there.

Yo, Japanon. Have you seen any older non-standard arcade games while out and about? Not looking for anything but to any japanons here I do have a possible request.

One of my favorite subjects is lost media. Of this lost video games are of course something I'm rrally passionate about. Two of the ones /vr/ has been most curious on is Roly Poly and Zeddas 3. These are right now two of the most sought after lost games. I ask not only if you guys could possibly search for them but I'm interested in if you can ask shop owners about them. I'm interested if these shop owners are aware of these games or other lost games.

Sorry if this seems like a weird request but I'm curious on if the Japanese are aware of these still currently lost games.

I may be slow to respond because I'm starting to get bogged down with requests but I will try to find a way to streamline the search process.

Enjoy the weekend everybody.

One last thing that slipped my mind.

I was able to get an AV Famicom complete out of the box yesterday for 7800 yen. Fortunately these things are much lighter than the original model so it should only cost 1860 yen to send everything in one box. I have gotten several requests in these threads so if anyone is still interested please contact me via email.

Any luck with sega Saturn twin sticks or 3DO?
>>
>>4024137
No twin sticks but a store near me currently has two in box 3DOs. The original model.

AFAIK speedrunners mostly use the GameCube Gameboy Player, not so much SGB2.
>>
>>4016391
Ive bought off OP twice and the shipping is cheaper than i thought it would be.
Still cheaper thanwhatever prices youd pay for the vidya on its own in nearly all western countries
>>
>>4024441
>>4024732
SGB2 was featured on My Life in Gaming as the "ultimate way to play Game Boy games on a TV" so all the RGBfags hopped on the bandwagon for it.

>>
>>4027528
I think those were only in a small area. They're illegal now at any rate and most Japanese peolywould find the idea disgusting.
>>
OP, what shipping service are you using? I might be willing to ship some things to people as well.
>>
>>4028217
I've been using SAL through Japan Post. It's a little cheaper if you make a Mypage account with them and print the labels at home. You have to order special pouches to put the labels in from Japan Post's website though. They don't have them at the post offices.

If you find a cheaper way to ship large items though please let me know. It seems like anything over 2000 grams is kind of pricey.

Hey op, do the stores you visit by chance have those blind game bags seen on game center cx?
>>
>>4032278
Not that I've seen. I 'be actually watched embarrassingly little of Game Center CX. But the stores where I find the best deals tend to be secondhand stores rather than game specialty stores as they aren't focused on just games.
>>
Buy me a Casio Loopy and a Wonderswan Color plz

>>4033516
oh shit now i'm wondering how much he getting them for. Would rather have that then some cheap ass wire i'm using now.
>>
>>4033410
>>4033427
Sorry, I guess I missed your question. S-video cables are usually ¥300 to ¥980 depending on the condition. I don't always see them though. Component cables are always available of course.

>>4033426
Probably not Madden but foreign games tend to be produced and sold in smaller quantities for the Japanese market so maybe with something they are.
>>
You ever see the Samba De Amigo Dreamcast maracas often?
>>
>>4033568
I think I sent you even an email too, about the cable
How much would be the shipping with EMS?
And what component cables you mean?
>>
>>4033574
I think I've seen them but I wasn't really paying attention at the time. They don't pop up as often as the Dreamcast gun or the Pop'n Music controller.

>>4033610
It depends on where you are. EMS to North America, South America and Oceania for something that small and light should be ¥2000 but to Europe it would be ¥2200.

I meant Nintendo component cables.
>>
>>4033426
Funny enough, some people do seek out the American versions of GTA games, because the Japanese versions tend to censor a bunch of stuff. But I doubt anyone is bothering to import them like this, since you can just buy the NA version from Amazon or even in some brick and mortar stores.
>>
>>4033702
North America would be, how much for the component cables usually?
>>
>>4033702
>I meant Nintendo component cables.
There are GameCube component cables and Wii component cables. The former are rare and expensive, the latter are cheap and plentiful.
>>
>>4033954
>>4033992
Sorry, I meant to type composite and hadn't a brain fart...

I have seen component cables for GameCube though and they're usually around ¥12500 to ¥15000.
>>
>>4034180
What about original wii component ones?
All they sell here are generic
>>
>>3992241

>>
>>3992241
yo how much do turbo16 go for in Japan?
>>
what's the usual prices for a PC Engine and PCE CD? Or one of those models with the PCE CD built in.
>>
>>4034604
>>4034617
Depends on condition, but from what I've seen, an unboxed base HuCard unit is typically around 4-8k, with working CD-ROM2 units going for 10-15k. A Duo is usually 15-25k, a Duo-R is 20-30k, and a Duo-RX is 30-40k (note that the Duo-R and -RX are the same thing except for the 6-button controller which is mostly pointless anyway, and most Duos and CD-ROM2 units will need a full recap job at this point).

You can still sometimes find deals, though. I got a Duo in excellent working condition for 13k, and I've seen base systems as low as 1k for a heavily yellowed one with no accessories.
>>
Fire Emblem collector here

how much is Fire Emblem: Fuin no Tsurugi (binding blade)
>>
>>4034631
Jesus. Thought they'd be slightly cheaper since they were popular in Japan. Oh well
>>
>>4034665
They were (and are) popular, sure, but they're also poorly-built, unreliable little bastards. Unlike SFCs which are nigh unkillable, working PCEs are literally a dying breed.
>>
>>4034656
Currently at a store near me complete in box for ¥2980.

>>4034668
Seconding this. Grab a random SFC from any junk section and there's a 99% chance it will work but turbos are already dying of old age.
>>
>>4034785

What do the Japanese consider junk if they put working consoles in the junk section?
>>
>>4034810
"Junk" is essentially Japanese for "as-is, no warranty". Actual non-working/damaged stuff they call "wake ari".
>>
Yo op, how much do you see neo geo accessories go ? Memory card, controllers, etc...

I was in Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto last April for about 2 weeks each, and I searched every single fucking Hard Off, Hobby Off, Off House, Book Off in the areas and never found a satellaview. Ended up just pouting and buying one online once I got back.

>>
>>3992274
Are those wii classic controllers really 7-8 bucks?
>>
>>4036334
Yeah, less when you factor the exchange rate and the fact that those prices are after tax. Welcome to Japan.

I'll probably upload a few more photos to the Google drive and post some here soon. There haven't been any huge changes in stock that justify an image dump.

If I do any traveling this summer I will try to stop by new places and post what I see.

I am so jealous! How much does Sexy Parodius, Sonic Wings, and a non-SataKore version of Soukyugurentai cost from OP?

I want those too.
>>
>>4036726
OP here. It depends on what the store is charging since I charge a 13% commission (it was originally 10% but I'm trying to account for the PayPal fee). That store only had one Soukyugurentai and no Sonic Wings right now but they still had another Sexy Parodius for ¥4980.

If you're ever interested in something just send me an email and I can send you a quote.
