I played the whole series on Saturn.
Because I played it in Saturn release order 3 was my first. I really liked blowing things away with magic in 3 and was a little disappointed how weak magic turned out to be in the rest of the games. But most people seem to like 3 the least.

My favourite SRPG series by far. Aside from enjoying the story and the designs, the game play brings me back again and again.

I think it has to do with the enemy AI, which rather random. Sometimes it is absolutely vicious, like a crowded map in Thracia, but sometimes it is totally retarded. It is a hell of a lot harder to bait and break up armies because of this randomness.

I downloaded an emulator and it came with Warsong. Couple years later I was out in the middle of nowhere with no internet, but had that shit on my computer. Turned it on and got blown the fuck away for the next 60 hours. What a fucking game!

I wish Langrisser V got an english translation.
Its a sequel of IV after all.

I just wish that the judgement system of IV is better. Being a rider there makes your turn to come up slow, and that makes mages quite fast out there.

Some crazy people win the scenario by trashing that wizard and his elementals. I've tried a handful of times, but have never done it.

Anyone has a secret tech to share?
I've figured that different from what most guides say, Liana is way more useful as a Sage than as a High Priest. It's especially abuseable if Lana is also a Sage, so you can cast Again on each other while their troops kill everything around.

Aaron can be surprisingly useful in Langrisser II as High Master if you give him the Assault Suit and Speed Boots while he's still a Sword Master. It pretty much requires the secret shop cheat though. Or you could just use the Rune Stone and break the game.

I think the game play is ridiculous. Literally zero tactics once you've gotten far into the game because of character leveling. The generic units become useless even as cannon fodder.

Personally I'd say Warsong, because it's the simplest and easiest.

Have you played 2? You really should, because it tactical depth all the way through the final level. And no, 2 is the not the same as Der Langrisser. It is the same story, but the game is slightly different in a way that makes heroes weaker and gameplay harder.

Though be warned, half the reason generics remain strong is because artillery is insanely good.

I like the first 2 (and Der Langrisser) should I bother with the latter iterations? Because I heard that they lean heavier on dating-sim than tactics

Not him but IV is a perfectly fine game. Where Der Langrisser feels like 80's anime, IV feels like 90's. That's the main difference for me. The dating elements are actually a complete mystery to you unless you're playing with a guide.

I've only played the patch-translated ones but I'd rank them as:

Der Langrisser
IV
Warsong

I can't bring myself to play with an external script so I look forward to playing V and III for myself one day, despite them both getting flack.
