I still relish the time I played the deluxe cockpit Outrun at Funspot in NH.

The hills are pretty bad.

I couldn't get past the first level. I didn't even crash or anything and it kept on giving me a game over / out of time screen or something each time I tried. A good racing game should at a minimum let you progress past the first level if you're driving at a normal speed and not crashing at all.

Also I wouldn't even know when to do that. Does anyone actually drive manual transmission anymore? When are you supposed to change gears, after driving for a minute or something?

Change gears around 180km/h, right as your RPM meter fills up. Not that hard.

I got it working just now. It's fucking bullshit, you can actually crash and still win if you shift gears but can't win if you don't shift gears and never crash.

Not to mention it should be changed to mph if he's playing in burgerland so he shouldn't need to know km. The original arcade had the option for either one. Regardless you shift up when you start to red line. No need to follow what speed your going.

San Francisco Rush is better because you don't have to change gears.

Have you tried the Cannonball engine port? It runs beautifully and you can reduce the traffic if you're getting rekt.

Actually, if you change on 180 your car slows down and it wastes time. The best time to change is 120-30 for a smooth drive.

What is the best version of outrun to play, including non retro remakes?

MAME is the best if you have some kind of analog controller, but the Genesis version is much much easier to play with a keyboard. Trying to play any of the Hang-On games in MAME is even worse cause you are supposed to have an entire plastic motorcycle as the controller

I haven't tried Cannonball though

Cannonball though Mame is alright.

I just applied mame cheats for infinite time, it made the came way comfier.

To play? Original or Outrunners (both arcade). Honorable mentions go to Racing Hero and Cool Riders, both excellent loosely related games.

To look at (and play of course)? OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast is absolutely breathtaking, even to this day. It's not as challenging as the old-school games but has neat features like the 15-stage continuous playthrough. Did I mention it looks absolutely fantastic?

The 3DS port is incredible. It contains almost all of the upgrades, options, and benefits of fan-projects like Canonball and includes some unique special features of its own.

Easily the best version of the game.

It's hard to drive a manual while simultaneously talking on the phone, playing with the radio, and eating a big mac.

In all seriousness tho I have no idea. I prefer driving a stick but it's really hard to find newer manual cars nowadays.

Outrun no matter how you finish the game is such an amazing game. Though the Saturn and from what I hear the 3DS one if you aren't anal about certian items are the best versions of the game.

Only the ultra low-end versions of 'regular' cars are even available as stick, and most people aren't willing to sacrifice air conditioning, power windows, and a stereo for a manual. That or you need to buy a sports car, and most people don't do that either. It's really just not as easy to buy a standard car in the US
