Both Chrono games have an overworld structure where you walk all the way through locations. It's exactly what the OP is NOT looking for.

huh, i always just clicked the location, my character would travel on the map there super quick, and bam I'm there ready to go through that area.

i don't even remember free roaming around an overworld, but it has been awhile
