for me it was easier to learn the words/grammar before the alphabets. Older games usually didn't use Kanji due to memory limitations or had Hiragana/katakana above them anyway.

If you know the words and sentence structure, when you're trying to read something in a game you'll just be able to figure out what it's saying a lot quicker.

Yes I'm at it for a year now and I can read all the simple stuff like gameboy games. First you need to learn the kana, then get anki to grind vocabulary and get yourself a grammar book like Japanese the Manga way. Then study religiously every day for a couple of hours. The hardest part is to keep at it. Good luck.

It takes time though. The average from being able to read basic stuff (not advance stuff) is around 2 years. But that varies from person to person. I've been learning for about a year and a half and can only read basic sentences from pokemon though I took it slower than most people
