How would you fix this game? It seems to me like a lot of great potential and craft wasted in inaccessible and unrewarding gameplay

Make it fully real time instead of semi-real time. Should have been more Zelda 64, rather than Final Fantasy. Playing Dark Souls I was like "yeah, this is what Vagrant story should have been like".

For the kind of game it is, it lasts as long as it should, works as fine as it can.
If anything, I'd probably just increase the amount of polygons. Or at least change the cutscenes for totally hand drawn stuff, like in the MGS novel for the PSP.

Remove Phantom Pain/Raging Ache.
Allow enemies to counter like you do.
Put all the cut content bar party member NPCs back in the game.
Remove wine and wine drops.
Give the localization to someone other than O'Smith.
Make a macro for quick swapping between the 8 weapons you have in the inventory.

I honestly quite like it when a game gives you a narrow perspective on a broader story, it gives you that sense of wonder and curiosity about the world and goings on that you don't see, these characters have histories and personalities before you meet them that you never get to learn about entirely, that you have to sort of guess at and sleuth out sometimes

This. I just played this recently and the lack of sorting options really got on my nerves.
Also, this was probably a limitation of the hardware at the time, but the fact that you have to save every time you deposit or withdraw is annoying and takes up way too much time.

The game is good but it could have had the vestiges of useless mechanics completely removed so as not to be distracting OR it could have gone all the way back to development and been remade from the ground up on PS2 so it could have DVD codespace and the processing power to calculate all the complex combat mechanics they wanted, with multiple characters and do it in real time. But then it would have probably just gotten compared to/confused with Summoner

I'm assuming you're talking about the last boss? Having played this game for the first time about a week ago, I beat him on the third try. You just have to learn how to interrupt the attack when he flies over you, or if you miss, use a defense ability to block it.
Otherwise it's just patience and chaining attacks.

When will you people learn that you can't die in this game, even if an attack would deal you 99999 damage as long as you have the reflexes to counter with absorb damage/magic you'll still live, you can actually heal yourself using this method especially with Guildy on a fresh file and chip him with 1 damage over and over again, or just use Raging Ache/Phantom Pain if you want to cheese him.

You don't even need to interrupt his Blood Sin attack, just fucking absorb it for god's sake, use your brain.

There's no reason to move at all. Zoning doesn't matter. Once an enemy starts an attack, you stop, and whether it connects is due to stats. It makes more sense to just park youself under an enemy's head, and wail on them, chug potions when need to, and get your chains off.

It's in this awkward position betewen SRPG and Action RPG. And it doesn't do either well right.

Ocarina of Time just plays better becuase you can actually move around.

I know /v/ would say autism, but I love the game because of the depth of the crafting and element system. Simplifying them would take away the thing that makes the game unique and interesting.

It does seriously need a better UI. Specifically some quick method to change weapons that doesn't involve going through multiple menu screens. Fix that problem, give it an HD facelift, and I'd give SE my monies on day one.

So you like getting nuked by Liches and eating Dragon's breaths all day every day, that's cool, everyone has a fetish after all.

Right, try doing that to a minotaur or a statue with a dagger.
You do know many enemies change their routines depending on your position, right?
Harpies are possibly the best example since if you stay close to them they will attack you physically, if you stay out of range with a crossbow they can't do anything, but if you don't hug them they'll begin to spam Banish like no tomorrow.
Liches do the same, they won't spam AoE spells if you stay near them, which makes them much easier and it's the whole reason why they can teleport.
Dragons are made so that if you stay close they will Tail Slam you but if you get out of range they'll begin to use Breaths.
The battle against Death and the Undead Ogre makes death stay out of range for spell spamming while the ogre will stay close to you so that it can attack you physically and make you lose time while Death teleports around.
Even using a lamp post wisely in the undercity is a good strategy because it acts as an obstacle, so that spellcasters whiff their spells by having the spell path colliding with the lamp post.
Gremlins love to abuse their vertical range so that they can spam spell safely, and you won't get near them unless you climb areas or you use magic or crossbows, which surprise surprise, have a better range allowing you to nullify their POSITIONING advantage.

Vagrant Story has many problems, but positioning isn't one of them.

I hated the Risk System because sometimes I would only be reduced to just use the Break Arts, and god Romeo's final fight was a borefest because of this specially because his AI was dumb as hell
Better shortcuts, I hated how sometimes it was a menu navigator simulator, but I apreciate that there were shortcuts a lot of abilities though.
Even so I loved the game a lot and what they intended with it
