It's because Nintendo announced that their SNES CD ROM expansion was going to be called "Play Station" in like '92 before their relationship with Sony ended. Then a couple years later when Sony announced they would be releasing their own console they called it the "PS-X". People who knew the story more or less rightly assumed that it was going to be the "Play Station" but Sony didn't want to trigger Nintendo all at once and were kind of testing the waters with that announcement "It's not the Play Station" but it probably is" and ultimately ended up going with the legally distinct name "Playstation". Then on top of that the 17 year old Western focus groups weren't that fond of the word "Play" so SOA and SOE used the PSX abbreviation pretty much all the way up to the release so it hung around longer than other prototype names.

It's actually a pretty interesting story that illustrates how thoughtful Sony is in all these different ways

PlayStation eXperiment was the console's codename. It leaked out and everyone started using PSX as the abbreviation. When the console was getting ready to launch in the US, some of the heads at SCEA wanted to officially brand the PlayStation as the PSX as they thought PlayStation was odd and not hip enough, and PSX already had some traction.
Also the all the PSX games' executable were originally .exe files, called PlayStation eXecutable, and if you open any game in a hex editor you'll see its header is PS-X.

If you look at the image linked in the post you're quoting, the official sites for major game developers referred to it as PSX. Companies like Capcom and Activision freely using PSX legitimizes it's use.
