No, it's just Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles who fight it. Chaos 4 is still tied with Chaos 6 for the most-fought boss in the game (Chaos 4 beats Chaos 6 if you count Big's Chaos 6 fight as a separate boss altogether, given the completely different mechanics between it and Sonic and Knuckles' respective fights against Chaos 6).

I always liked the line in SA1 where Sonic seemingly made up "Eggman" on the spot as an insult. I know it was done for the localization but usually they never give canon reasons for the name changes (King Koopa and Princess Toadstool come to mind).
