Let's be honest, the Atari 2600 was shit.

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

>>
Cool story bro.
>>
Right now? Yes.

Back when it was first released? No.
>>
>my attention span is too short to enjoy these games so they must be shit

Sure it's not for everyone but there are still plenty of people who like it. I didn't grow up with a 2600 and never even played Atari until about four years ago but it very quickly became one of my favorites. If late 70s/early 80s arcade games aren't your thing then the 2600 isn't going to be either.

No well fine, this one is a bit average

Atari 2600 was amazing for what it was: The first successful home video game console that allowed you to play more games than fucking pong. There are a good number of games that are still fun to play on the system.

No one knew how to make good console games before this came out which is why there were so many garbage games.

oh my god this fucking game. nostalgiaing so hard, haven't seen it in like 25 years. it was built-in my atari 2600 along with many others; I liked that one a lot.

If you learn to program it, you will learn to respect it.

Not an Atari 2600 game. iRobot's pretty cool, but I think their other vector games are more fun to actually play.

the 2600 had one of the coolest looking controllers
>>
>>3966995

1977 consumer technology that still managed some playable ports of video games made with early 80's arcade technology. Also had a color palette that wouldn't be beat until the Super Famicom.

Not so shabby in hindsight.

>>
>>3967730

And the Sega Master System controller is a perfect replacement for the 7800's shitty two-button joystick. Plugs right in.
>>
>>3967730

I think there may be an issue with the genesis controller having a start button and the possibility of harming "incompatible" hardware with it. The master system controller would be a safer bet, if that's true anyway.

damn straight!
>>
>>3967741
plugs right in but doesn't work other than the d-pad, and even then it behaves differently depending on the game. try playing xevious with a master system controller. the 7800 controller was wired very strangely from what I understand.
>>
>>3967748

i have bought 2 dollar chinese genesis controllers on ebay and they work 100% on Atari systems.
>>
>>3967760

A few of the games designed by GCC (Xevious, Pole Position) had a weird way of checking hardware on startup to see if you had a 7800 or 2600 attached. The Sega controller gets read as a 2600 controller for those games, and behaves wonky. But most games work.
>>
>>3966995
At least it is better then the fucking master system.

>>
Is this the reason why Atari 2600 and all its game library cost pennies on ebay?
>>
>>3966995
Which one of your favorite YouTubers told you this?
>>
>>3968925
There's no real collector's market for the system. The people closer to my age, who grew up with the 2600, either already have full collections or just don't have an interest in the hobby. The generations that followed didn't really latch on to the Atari stuff with the Nintendo out there completely dominating the market.

That said, there are a handful of rare and expensive 2600 tapes to be had out there. The problem with getting them is that even if you have the money, you have to find one to buy in the first place. Air Raid comes to mind. There were, at best, less than 20 copies ever made. So even if you wanted it, good luck finding a seller. Not to mention you'd be paying several thousand dollars for what barely passes as a game, let alone a good one.

You're right, though. 99% of the library is dirt cheap, and I don't expect that to change. There isn't ever going to be a generation that looks back and says, "yep, 2600 best games, best system."

It's not the 2600's fault. Ms. Pac Man is proof of that.
>>
>>3969183
I used to collect pretty hard. Atari 2600 had a strong collector's market before the recession hit. Not only did the recession fuck shit up, but the people who enjoyed those games are getting old and passing away.

>>3969201
>>3969286
There was the Starpath Supercharger which allowed you to play video games stored on cassette tapes. Also added an impressive 6KB to the 2600's RAM. Cassettes for it are pretty rare, so next time you're at a thrift store poke through the cassette tapes.

The programmers told Atari that they needed more ram in the cartridge, Atari said "no." So they did the best with what they had. This game is a lesson in why managers are kind of shit at making technical calls.
Ms.Pacman is the game they wanted to build.
>>
>>3967241
>that framerate
>beautiful colorful graphics that use the full extent of the systems capabilities

what happened, game developers?
>>
>>3969690
this thing is cool as hell but it's for the Atari 8-bit line, not the 2600. The A8 also had plenty of programs released on cassette tape.
>>
>>3969749

The 2600 has no framebuffer, so its games are forced to run at 50/60fps.

Fry the programmer actually complicated it a bit by insisting on a two player mode but the game is actually pretty impressive considering it was under 4K. The maze itself is actually a clever trick. It's basically one piece repeated and then mirrored for the opposite side and then certain parts are filled in

The 2600 has a 1d graphics accelerator. The implacable pace of the TV's electron beam determines how you order your code. It's like paving a highway in front of the car racing down it. Writing for Atari is like playing Atari, where it's simple and complex at the same time.

It's a very exciting environment and you can get sucked into it even when you have better things to do with your time.
>>
>>3969679
Do Atari 800 tapes work with it?
>>
>>3967305
Yeah, Atari Games and their arcade games ruled but that is most certainly not a 2600 game
>>
>>3967241
This game is rad. Am I a faggot for finding out about it because metaljesus mentions it all the time? It's probably the only game he's put more than 45 minutes into in his life.
>>

>>
>>3966995
That's wrong you dumb kid.
>>
>>3970656

I wanted to keep it simple. Maybe it would have been better to day that the concept of framerate doesn't exist on the 2600.
>>
Atari should have stick'd with computers and arcades
>>
>>3967371
>that POKEY music

No shit. That's hardly a trick, it's plain to see.
