Are you insane? MT-32 hands-down. It's not even about "preferring" FMSynth; the MT-32 can sound like an Adlib if so desired.

Adlib. MIDI sounds cheap

*MT MIDI

neither: Yamaha XG

Adlib is the cheap consumer-level option while the MT-32 is the professional / prosumer option. That games were even programmed to take advantage of it at all is pretty remarkable.

Recorded orchestras
MT-32 is objectively better, but I have a certain affinity for Adlib.
MT-32 is better
It's 2017.
Unless you wanna pay $200+ for either, go for the Yamaha Audician 32 Plus.

IMO "GS Wavetable Synth" ruined midi for a lot of people, including me. I grew up with that shitty instrument set, thinking midi wouldnt get better than this. MT-32 isnt bad, but the damage has been done. I know there IS some good midi devices out there, I just will prefer soundblaster to them.

patrician's choice
also here is a neat video of the DOOM E1M1 recorded on different soundcards (sb1, sb16, AWE64, SC-88 etc) so you can hear the differences,
