Silent Bomber.

Not really sure how to describe it, but here goes: What if Bomberman was a fast paced action game with lock-on mechanics, a gritty future aesthetic, over the top campy sci-fi plot and lovably bad voice acting? And it was made by the people who would later go on to do Asura's Wrath?

It's a PS1 action gem. I'd put it next to Bulk Slash on the Saturn as one of the great unknown 32-bit action games.

Maybe the ENG VA, the japanese one was great.
But yeah, it's possibly the best action game on PS1, shame it's so short, 14 levels isn't enough for sci-fi Bomberman May Cry.

The controls are great, but the strength of the gameplay is that it's super fluid and fast paced with mechanics like wall jumping and air dashing, the scoring system also pushes you to keep on comboing aggressively so that even by destroying bullets with bombs as a defensive measure can keep your score going up faster, it's basically chaining like you would do in any STG with such mechanic, but applied to a fast paced 3D "run and gun", it's a masterpiece, and all of the stages are excellently designed.

>The stage where you have to destroy the Hardshell factory while staving off all the Hardshells coming to kill you
>That cramped as fuck train stage
>That stage when you are inside the city and can destroy buildings, trees and shit
>The bioweapon stage
>The computer room stage where you have to protect Annri
>The elevator stage
>The final fucking battle with the chessboard

And lets not forget the Arena battles for PVP with even the enemy characters as part of the roster.

>How good is the PVP?
It's mostly for dicking around and the vast majority of characters are either broken or unviable due to the Shield mechanic.
You have access to many character who all retain the moveset you see in the game and some unique moves too, the beam sword hardshell for instance has a really strong air charge that isn't in the normal mode, many all hardshell can shoot missiles too in the Arena, the problem is the Shield mechanics which makes the game a chore in actual PVP because it's really hard for a competent player to run out of shield energy, so most of the time you'll be poking at each other for hours with nobody hitting anyone.

It's still pretty fun to play as all those characters, many bosses are playable, like the intro stage tank, the first boss, Mercury(the commander hardshell with the beam bazooka), there's even Benoit as a playable character, then there's a few mooks like beam saber hardshell, standard hardshell, Blue Mist unit and the bioweapon insect, you can also unlock John, which is one of the most broken characters.
Unlocking the characters is actually a good challenge because you'll need to have a S score to unlock all characters and arenas, it's a good reward for gitting gud at the main game.

I remember playing a little bit of this in a demo booth for the N-Gage

I personally recommend Akuji: The Heartless. It is a 3D platforming action game which has similar progression to Mario 64. You go into a world and collect your ancestor's souls. Though you don't get booted out of the level when you collect them. There is a little hub world and you need a certain amount of souls to unlock the next level. It is a pretty cool voodoo game.

back in 1995 (when i was born), the PSX came out. there were some neat hidden gems that i grew up playing, like parasite eve 1, bushido blade 2, xenogears (which, let's be honest, as a 4 year old, i just didn't get!). you may have heard of games like "crash bandicoot: warped," but have you heard of gran turismo (the first one)? boy, i played that game until my thumbs ached.

god, some people have already mentioned good stuff like >>3966318. that game spooked the heck out of me and i had recurring nightmares! still, it was so fun even though i wasn't able to beat it. tomba II, like >>3968292 said, was super bright and fun! great palate cleanser after the doom and gloom of medievil and >>3971365.

well, i guess you've probably heard of pic related, but it's a blast anyways! (and no, it's not god of war, LOL) gaming doesn't get much better than the 5th generation! except for the xbox 360, but that's a different story...............

>>
>>3977878
>>3976679
It was really obnoxious with the simultaneous turn based system.

To elaborate, while they don't really go beyond the game rules, the CPU basically knows and takes into account of your moves before they get to make theirs.
Meaning, the CPU can actually go and hit your currently moving char (and correctly predict and attack where he was going, flanks and all) while you can only realistically go for the ones that's already moved because otherwise it will move that character and dodge your attack.
>>
>>3978050
you get to grind, customize your characters and learn new abilities so I don't see a problem with the AI cheating in turnbased RPGs, in fact more RPGs should do this
the reason it's bullshit in fighting games is because both you and your opponent are basically the same in terms of the skill pool
>>

AJPW: King's Soul

Best wrestling game of that era and by far the best wrestling game on the PS1.

It's not very often that everything comes together right - awesome graphics, huge move sets, timing based sim-like gameplay that I prefer over the pseudo wrestling games of today (more like beat'em ups with wrestling characters), good roster and it is only lacking with edits.

As somebody that actually owns Terracon (PALfriend) it doesn't look as good as that video suggests. Yes, it's extremely impressive with those big landscapes and light maps but the visuals appear extremely janky when played on a TV, more so than a regular PS1 game. Also the LOD kicks in after not a very long distance, pretty obvious on a TV. And the framerate is pretty bad at times. I like what they did, and the game is fun, but it's not big leap over say Spyro 3, in fact it generally looks worse IMO. Saying it looks Dreamcast quality is ridiculous, no Dreamcast game Gouraud colour shading in substitute of textures like Terracon.
