Master of Darkness for Master System comes to mind. I can't honestly recommend it whole-heartedly as I didn't think it was that great, but a whole bunch of people seem to love it. It's like Castlevania both in gameplay and presentation

I guess Actraiser is a lot like what you described as well

There's always Rusty for the PC-98. It's basically a Castlevania clone, but still a pretty damn solid game.

Which emulator are you using, and are you using a controller? The game felt way better for me with a controller, and also not playing on a shitty older emulator like Anex86.
