When I was ~13 and this game just came out I played the fuck out of it, a year or two later I still played regularly and sometimes, bored, I would pretend like the Mario Police were chasing me and just run and jump the hell around the levels. I found all kinds of pointless but impressive tricks and stunts to perform to make my escape. Looking back, it was like practicing speedrunning in some sense except it was completely unstructured. I'm not sure whether this was more or less autistic than that, though.

Anyone else do shit like this?

If it was the intended solution, the penguin wouldn't try to throw your timing off by walking backwards during its route. Walking beside it was how you were expected to get through.

The polygon on the penguin's head being just flat enough for you to stand on is mere coincidence. If it was what you were supposed to do, you wouldn't clip right into it. See: the underground lake monster in HMC.
