Overall, Tsuu is the best of the original 4 rulesets. There's a reason why Japanese players are still competing in Tsuu and why next to none of them play Puyo Puyo 1, Sun, or Yon. Puyo Nexus (basically the SRK of Puyo Puyo) claims that Tsuu's Genesis/Mega Drive port is arcade perfect, so go with that.

Tsu is the only proper arcade port on md because the jamma board uses the same chips mostly, i think the audio chips were different which is why tsu arcade sounds a little clearer in the voice sample department

Puyo 1/Kirby's Avalanche/Mean Bean Machine is just a race to see who can pull off the bigger chain first, therefore it is garbage.

I happened upon a copy of Super Puyo Puyo for super cheap and figured now was as good a time as any to finally try out Puyo Puyo. I'm shit at these sorts of puzzle games but it's still a good deal of fun.

I didn't know before that the characters were from a different series called Madou Monogatari. Are those games any good? They seem kind of generic but the same could be said of plenty of good games just looking at screenshots.
