afaik the games don't have connected plots. It's just that some are more obtuse and challenging than others. Frontier has some advanced mechanics for veterans to mess with, but it is still comfortable enough as the first game. Just dive right in, but you should probably save the Lute and Riki scenarios for later and start with any of the rest.
