Tetris has a really bumpy legal history. Tengen Tetris is an unlicensed game, as are all Tengen games. Regardless, it was ruled not illegal to sell Tengen games. However, Tengen published their version of Tetris without securing the rights in the US, which Nintendo did instead. That didn't stop some copies being sold before many were pulled from the shelves. They are somewhat rare, but not impossible to find, which is a shame, because it's the superior NES version. Nintendo's kinda sucks.

Tetris DS is great for the audio and visuals. The goofy spinoff modes are fun too.

I've heard good things about tetris party for wii, though it's main draw was the online multiplayer

My favorite Tetris (and Puzzle games in general) renditions are the ones that nail the normal game perfectly and then have a bunch of other fun modes.

DS is the best one I own like this, but I'm sure there's plenty of others.

It has more musical options, offers a coop mode (yeah, fucking coop tetris is a thing on the NES) and a competitive, and generally just looks better too.

Classic GB tetris is best for /pure/ tetris. My personal favourite is Puyo Puyo Tetris.
