My favorite metroidvania is Order of Ecclesia.
My favorite classicvania is Adventure Rebirth.

Adventure Rebirth ranks only slightly higher than Rondo for me due to the very satisfying gameplay, and would be perfect if it had more levels and branching paths outside levels.

SoTN favorite metroidvania.

How can a series have such a sharp quality contrast? Outside of the terrible parts (Simon's Quest, Legends, Haunted Castle, Dracula battles in Belmont's Revenge and Dracula X, the Super4 scrubfest) the classic style games were pretty amazing (the Japanese versions anyways).

SotN is my favorite by far, I'm looking forward to that chink's upcoming crowdfunded game Bloodstained Ritual of the Night. Super Castlevania on the SNES had some awesome music but I hate games with time limits.

IV is easy, but not as easy as Rondo, Bloodlines or even CV 1 (holy water)

My main problem with it is that it is incredibly boring; graphics are way too dark and music hasn't aged well. It does make it the most atmospheric of the lot but I'd still replay Adventure over it any day of the week; at least that one has a smoothish difficulty curve in contrast to the annoying spikes of 4.

X68000/Chronicles for classic
SotN for metroidvania

I really like the arcade style X68000 has and keeps the universal/hammer horror film theme that Castlevania 1 had.

Not even 20 posts in and Australia is already ruining yet another CV thread.

Am I the only one who doesn't like the music that much for IV?

It's well-made music in its own right, but a lot of it doesn't feel very horror to me. It sounds like it should be in a fantasy RPG or something.

A lot of the music in CV games don't feel "horror".
Tracks like Vampire Killer, Wicked Child, Bloody Tears, Beginning, all sound like they would fit a fantasy RPG rather than a horror game.
IV has a good mixture of upbeat old-style tracks, but also some that are more somber and horror-like.

At any rate, I think music is consistently good in retro CV games, at least the ones made by Konami in Japan.

I think I'm the only one who really likes harmony of dissonance.

Simon's quest while very cryptic, had the most satisfying combat in the first 3 games.
