Modern demos, at least for the Amiga, aren't really that comfy though. They mostly focus on procedeural content and not just cool effects. The OP dentro feels like I'm sitting in a comfy cottage in northern Sweden.

Overdrive 2 released yesterday on Revision 2017.

Fucking incredible. I wish I knew the MD hardware a little better to fully appreciate the mind fuck I just witnessed.

Do any of these demo folks ever publish their code?
>>
>>3927324
Sure if you ask them but what you saw on the video is not achievable on any emulator so we are yet to find out how and why things were done.
>>
>>3927329
If emulators can't handle this, it means they are taking advantage of either undocumented behavior (like hammering VDP registers at non-blanking times), or extremely fine timing. I wonder if such a demo would run on different versions of the hardware?

I didn't realize the 68k was fast enough to do nearly full screen 3d rendering. The fractal stuff and corridor left me dumbfounded.
>>
>>3927770
Right from the nfo

Due to extensive usage of a previously largely undocumented
hardware register, it will not run properly on all MD systems.

Our tests have shown that around 30% of Model I and 5% of
Model II systems experience issues. This is due to a change
in the manufacturing process of the video chip.

Impressive and all, but the demoscene guys need to up their game. They're pretty much just porting the same algorithms to achieve the same effects they've been doing since the 80s.

Is there a bigger demoscene on the game boy than the mega drive or even snes?

A quick search on pouet.net suggests that Mega Drive demos drastically outnumber GB/GBC and SNES demos.
>>
>>3929684
probably because it was more popular in yurop

by the way i always found it strange that the japanese had no proper demoscene until recently, it seems like the kind of thing that would be right up the alley of the nerds there
>>
>>3929684
Honestly, without coprocessor support, a stock GB/NES/SNES just doesn't have a lot of computing power. Of course this was Nintendo's business strategy to keep prices low/

It's kind of ironic. In some ways the MD/Genesis had an overpowered CPU connected to underpowered hardware, while the SNES had overpowered hardware connected to an underpowered CPU.

>>3927152
Ok, this has some similar effects to the >>3927204. How are they doing that multiple layer rotating pattern shit?
>>
>>3929731
>multiple layer rotating pattern
I don't know how they do it because I'm not a programmer, but that is one of those classic effects that demoscene coders have managed to reproduce on every platform known to man. Another one you've probably seen all over the place (including in that gameboy demo) is the shimmering plasma-looking effect.
Sometimes the demoscene is criticized for relying so much on the same old tricks.
>>
>>3927204
Problem with demos such as these is that they're overly long, unfocused and full of things we've seen a million times before. Impressive, but masturbatory and all over the place.
I prefer demos that are short, simple and to the point.

>>

>shimmering plasma-looking effect
Yeah, the GBs got that one too.

The rotating bars is also pretty old-hat. If you can draw a single scaled scanline, then you can make the bar illusion. SNES would do that with its affine transform mode-7 hardware, while evidently the MD was just powerful enough to do it directly.
>>
>>3929752
>If you can draw a single scaled scanline, then you can make the bar illusion.
Yeah, I think that applies for any effect that involves a figure warping along only one dimension at a time.

The Overdrive 2 demo has some effects that genuinely surprised me though. Fullscreen 3D effects with screen-height 2D graphics on top is not something I would've expected to see running on a stock Genesis.
>>
>>3929687
>probably because it was more popular in yurop
Not like the GB/C wasn't super fucking popular everywhere. Everyone knows what a Game Boy is at my age, while barely anyone heard of the 16-bit titans.

>>3929731
>Honestly, without coprocessor support, a stock GB/NES/SNES just doesn't have a lot of computing power
Yeah, that's the fun part. Do you think the C64 is super powerful?
>>
>>3929773
>Yeah, that's the fun part.
I agree. I have put together some game demos myself, and have come to appreciate how big a Mb can be, and how fast a few MHz is; people are completely spoiled by modern computing.
