Breath of fire thread

Just started IV today, pretty damn good. At the part where I rescued the mayor of the town full of traps from a giant beast. Art is gorgous but soundtrack is okay. Either way really enjoying it so far.
>>
I've been slogging through 2 for a few months now. I just can't get invested in it.
>>
I've started playing BoF IV too since my BoF III save file got corrupted after reaching the checkpoint where you fight Mikba.
Anyways, any tips at this game or it is just as easy as the third one?
>>
>>3914121
Easy too.

In an interview abput DQ I remember a dev saying they were trying to make the game more difficult since most said III and IV were easy. If you want more difficulty maybe try that. Though so far I'm still quite enjoying IV. I tried III but got bored around the time shift. So far this one feels more interesting.
>>
I beat I, II and III in order but still haven't played IV.
Is it really that good?

I am in love with the series so far.
>>
Recently played through 1 and 2. Was bored out of my mind. Towards the end of 2 I just said fuck it and started having Nina banish all the random battles and just rushed the rest of the way.

Been a decade since I played 3, but I remember enjoying it at the time.
>>
OP here, moon sword or scramasax?
>>
>>3914035
It really isn't a stand out game.

1/2 was capcom kind of just saying "Well everyone else has a rpg, might as well make one". 3/4/5 was them actually trying to do something. 1/2 really is your typicall 16 bit jrpg, which some might like honestly.
>>
>>3914269
1 was Squaresoft. 2 and beyond was Capcom.
>>
>>3914283
No, capcom made 1. Square just published 1 in the US. As if square would just give an IP to capcom randomly. I imagine they published it for capcom as a means of gaining more awareness of jrpgs in the west.

>>

Too bad you can one shot everyone there. Unlike in 3 or 4 where there's actually an exploration constituent and random battles can get quite frustrating, in 2 random battles are a non-issue.
>>
>>3914403
Stop being intentionally retarded. Unless you're going dragon every single random battle and chugging items to replenish AP, you're not "one shotting" anything. Most encounters are a mix of magic susceptible and magic immune enemies, so you can't just blast them all away in one spell. You're usually better off just hitting autobattle and letting the game do its thing.

And I didn't say that the battles were hard. Just that there's an absurd amount of them. They're retarded wastes of time since there's no tactics or anything involved and the character advancement in terms of exp isn't even necessary. Combine that with dungeon designs that are virtually nothing but a bunch of blatant dead ends and back tracking designed to maximize the number of random battles you're forced to endure and there's no fun.

>>3914397
There are mere 2 cutscenes that cancel the fusions which happen between a prolonged dungeon designed to promote shaman usage, so that's a non-issue. That's also a non-issue accounting the fact player can teleport back to the surface from the dungeon save point with 1 spell and back by falling in battle. If you have played the game you should know that when you die you get teleported back to last save point, progress remains. The only thing that is being lost is half the pocket money.

Interested, anyone else kind of put off bybthe animal people at first? Maybe just me.

III and IV are so fucking pretty. I don't know why they had such a generic anime style for I and II but getting Yoshikawa was great. His art is fucking gorgous. The pic in the OP is one of my favorite pieces of game art ever. IV's designs I find the best overall. Very fantasy but feels unique in that it doesn't seem to lean on a high fantasy or sci fi inspiration.

BOF4 is proof that the N64/PSX should never have gone so hard into 3D shit. The spritework in BOF4 is off-the-charts good.

I really wish there had been more sprite-based games in that generation of consoles. We could have ended up with some graphics that really stood the test of time instead of the ugly blocky shit we ended up with.
>>
>>3914528
Agreed. Other then the weird decision to make bosses 3d the use of 3d in BoFIV was great. It was used sparingly and cleverly.

This is true, but they also tried their hardest to be more than that. Colorful world and characters, zombies, slimming an overweight person from the inside out, stone mecha, etc. They're generic and yet they still try to have some fun with it.

>>3914035
BoF2 takes forever to get going. It's only after you sort out the too-long Bow/Bosch subplot that it really starts to get better. I thought nothing of it when I first played it but with the re-translation I was blown away and it became my second favorite BoF game after IV. Having conversations with each character and them basically getting their own story arc feels quite modern and I wish I could find more SNES JRPGs that handled its characters so well. Only FFVI and CT come to mind.

>>3914510
I like the other games but IV was the only "uniquely pretty" of the bunch if you ask me. I wish BoF had evolved into a high Asian fantasy-type JRPG series instead of basically dying. I can't think of any series that fills that niche. It's a shame.

Fou-lu did nothing wrong
When he was attacked with the hex that was made out of the human sacrifice of the woman who loved him and he decided to completely lay waste to the Fou Empire I supported him wholeheartedly.

At the end of the game when he said that the mortals were cruel, savage, heartless and barbaric and the game showed you all those images, I couldn't argue with him. I just couldn't because he was right. Based on the evidence and experience he was factually correct in all of his deductions.

Making the bad ending the right ending
>>
>>3916428
No.

Some shitty people exist, sure, but we see various decent or good people on your adventure. All your party members change and grow from your involvement and ultimately become better people. You can't fault the actions of the majority for the actions of a few.

Fou-lu is one of the greatest villians not because he is faultless but because he is actually fully belivable. I kind of expected some edgelord at first with that design but he really seems like a decent person in some ways. When Bunyan saves he thanks him and treats him with respect. He isn't a horrible person but has faced so many horrific events his view becomes almost sympathetic. This is why IV's story is actually good, there is actual debate as to how moral some characters are. The fact that Yuna suffers no consequences makes the character and what he represents so much deeper.

>>3916512

Ive been saying that last bit for a long time now. Yuuna surviving is just to perfect to not be anything but intentional and Im glad to see someone else who got it.

It wasn't because they ran out of time or budget, it would have been easy and cost nothing to add in a scene where it happens even if it wasn't how they wanted. But not doing it just adds so much to the final confrontation because the weight of it knowing that someone that awful is still out there gives Fou the footing he needs to stand out in the final confrontation.

A normal anime of JRPG will say something like PEOPLE ARE GOOD DEEP DOWN and while a lot are in the immediate sense all the major villains will have been deal with so the villain just looks like a shallow edge lord twat. But BOF4 is different it gives it's villain weight. Are humans so bad that we need to harm the innocent if it means punishing the wicked or is their goodness worth protecting even if the wicked go free. That looses something if there's not any wicked to go free or any good to punish.
>>
>>3916651
Thanks. I had heard of this but didn't know it wad complete. Thanks anon.
>>3916661
Same. I believe the story goes that developers ran out of time but later said if they knew letting Yuna survive would anger so many fans they would have done it "from the start". I'm not really sure myself but either way I'm happy they did it. It adds so much more impact. As you said, it really adds weight to Fou lu's motivation. Yeah, seeing him would have been a good feelimg but seeing a villian get what they deserve is common. As I said I don't agree with Fou lu's view but they made it believable and actually understandable instead of just makimg him an edgelord.

I've started II and III but could never finish sadly. Although there were good sections both felt kind of slow. IV had me from start to finish and I'm picky as fuck on jrpgs. It't interesting since apparently it was rushed as fuck as to meet the holiday market as well as be out befpre the release of the ps2. Even the quite good English translation was made in a mere seven monthes. I'm thankful for how great it came out with such a shitty work schedule.

I just played through 4 and sure its pretty but everything else is boring as fuck. 3 is my fave.

Maybe try it again. Tried III and got to the time shift and felt like I was going nowhere. I plan to try it again eventually though at least.
>>
>>3916740

I don't really see how you could have been bored by it. The battle system alone is one of the liveliest the genre has seen on the system and it's such a departure from the standard Medieval Europe setting and all the stuff with Fou Lu.

And Im honestly not trying to sound contrarian but on a recent play through of the series I did find 3 to be rather dreadfully dull. There's just too much getting side tracked by mini games and the whole first half takes ages.

It depends. 1/2 are quite standard 16 bit jrpgs. 1 is VERY basic in just about every sense of the word. 2 is still pretty basic but it a step up and tries to be a bit more unique. OP here, about 12 hours into IV and at the ruins after rescueing Cray. Have three questions if anyone minds answering.

1. Are skills from enemies meant to be common? I've learned a few for my characters but I'm worried I might be missing important ones. Whenever I find a new enemy I try to guard against it for a few turns with all my characters but still.

2. Any advice on getting 3,000 damage? I thought you would be able to link all three of my character's magic together but it seems I can only link two character's magic together. Also the fact that other bosses I kill anything before getting 3,000.

3. Is ignoring fishing fine or do you think its a deeper mechanic I need to look into? I know fushing is quiet a feature BoF is well known for but it seems boring and would give me overpowered equipment in an already quite easy game.

Really loving this though. III was a little iffy for me but this one really appeals to me.
>>
>>3918107

1. Fairly yeah. I wouldn't worry about missing anything though.

2. Healing counts as "damage" so if you can work a group heal into your combo it works.

3. Fishing is useful. I wouldn't ignore it because there's a master later that teaches you skills based on fishing. Also you can get a lot of useful items.
>>
>>3918127

Realistically, yeah.

The fact they decided to count that game not as some spinoff but as the actual sixth game is fucking disgusting. At best we may see cameoes. However one thing I've been reallybhoping for is maybe, just maybe, a playable BoF character in the new MvC.

Also anyone know if Yoshikawa is still there even. That art is admitably good but Yoshikawa is the artist of BoF, their art is part of the series like Toriyama with DQ.

Yeah, there are new instruments added to songs improving the sound quality. Unfortunately there are also drawbacks to the psp version. It suffers from slowdown during certain battle animations as well areas in the game. Also some things were altered/removed. Near the beginning Ryu finds one of the horse brothers taking a piss, this was removed in the psp version. Also stallion's colors in its boss fight was altered, not sure why though.

Basically pick your poison, worse audio and sound or worse performance and some details removed. I don't believe any kind of patch exists that adds the psp music to the ps1 version exists unfortunately.

Hope this helps.
>>
>>3919790
Well, I'm playing the PSX version right now and I just got past the piss scene so no problem with that, I only played for a little while so I don't mind restarting if the soundrack is better (actually the soundtrack was my main gripe with the game until now, kinda weak). Any other removed or censored scene?

>not acknowledging Quarter as one of the greatest games of all time

You know it really makes me sad that when a major company actually tries something unique, breaks away from the same old, same old it's not met with the praise it deserves but rather people whining about things being different.
>>
>>3920176
Plebs. Probably a BoFIIfag. IV and V are what makes this series amazing. Neither are perfect but both IV and V are well crafted great original games.
>>
>>3920176
>>3920228
I didn't make the chart.
>>
>>3920176
Dragon Quarter is one of the hottest pieces of garbage I've ever played. It's a game where you HAVE to get game overs and start over from the beginning. Who the actual fuck thought that was a good idea?
>>
>>3919790
>Also stallion's colors in its boss fight was altered, not sure why though.

Because Stallion's design is a reference to Ultraman, and he was using the exact same color scheme. On top of that, Utmost Attack looked just like Ultraman's arm beam attack.
>>
Can someone help me? In BoFIV how do I remove skills from a character?
>>
I never beat 3 or 4 from my childhood and it is a fire slowly consuming me. Started 3 again a couple years back and now I am 1000 miles away from my ps2/save file. I will beat those games one day!
>>
>>3920283
How could anyone not see the transparent mechanics of BOF5 and finish the game without a single game over while being a retro player is beyond me. Nearly every Genesis or SNES game are much harder to complete than BOF5. The feeling of defeating the 3 boss sequence in the beginning without using D power is one of gaming's best experiences. Knowing you have the "kill all and look cool" button, but keeping it back until you're an inch away from death, or defeating all three bosses without using it at all is incredibly deep in the sense of reward it provides.
>>
>>3920283
>It's a game where you HAVE to get game overs and start over from the beginning.

No you don't. That's just a crutch you can choose to rely on if you're bad at the game.
>>
>>3920394
There's literally a message "Return to skill scroll" or something in some of the menus.
>>
>>3920463

See one of the things I love best about Quarter is that just based on the complaints it's easy to tell who's just bad at video games

RPGs have trained people to rely on being over powered for far to long.
>>
>>3919764
>>3919790
Probably bullshit.
>>
>>3921504
Why do you say that? Not that absurd of a claim and it seem to said by multiple sources.
>>
>>3920639
It's a fun to go back to the game knowing how to do things like just tap the DDash once for like 3 seconds of invincibility, fast as fuck and barely takes any meter. There's also the fact that you can both beat every fight (except one) without using your dragon powers, and also beat any boss with your dragon powers in one turn.

Then there's people who play the game without ever using traps to buy turns, without ever saving enough AP meter for a full bar, without ever figuring out Ryu's damage based skill, without ever learning any of Lin's chain combos, without ever learning to skip encounters with weaker monsters by using bombs and traps, without ever figuring out you can use bombs when you're in battle to crutch your damage early on.

oh well
>>

Nevermind, tried it myself... There's almost double the instrumental tracks holy shit!
Still, I could only find one source, that gamefaqs thread.

Anyone here know moonruins and play the Japanese version of BoFIV?

I'm at the part with Nina where she randomly blurts out "I think I love Cray." at it seems random as fuck. I tried looking into and see sources saying its their in the original as well as sources that said this was a mistake in the English version. Anyone able to answer.

>>

Either IV or III, check em out on youtube to see which you might like better if you want
>>
>>3922919

Cray and Elina are in love. Nina also loves Cray but generally stayed quiet because she was happy for them.

>>3923508

IV's easily one of the best in the series so yeah Id start there.
>>
>>3923508
The thing is they're all quite different. It's difficult to suggest a starting one as none of them really continue off of each other in the way sequels normally do. Basically a recap of the series.

I: The first game. This is your typical 16 bit jrpg. Many skip this game entirely as it offers little of interest to make itself stand out. Unless your dying for more turn based or love BoF skip it.

II: The second game is also typical but a little more unique. While nothing genre defining its a good game for what is.

III: This is the game most associate with BoF and is seen by most as the best. The battle system was reworked and a bit more interesting with a system that allows younto learn enemy attacks. The art is high quality as well with a good blend of 2d pixel art and 3d enviorments. However BoFIII is VERY slow, maybe even frustratingly slow. Personally I could never do it.

BoFIV: This is what I would say is the best of the ones I looked into. IV offers a very solid battle system that adds on the system in III while allowing you to use your entire party in battle. Sadly the game is a bit too easy meaning it never gets to reach its full potential but its still very involving for turn based combat. The story is also very good and is seen from two different but interesting perspectives. There's some filler in the later part but its a great game with a story people today still highly discuss.
>>
>>3923719
I think the confusion comes from the beach scene. There's rumors that in the Japanese version she says she's worried about Cray I believe and that this got botched in the English version. Though its difficult to tell as different sources say different info.

Yeah I heard all the different stories too. You have to take a fair bit of what you hear of 4 from the fans with a grain of salt. They can't even agree with what the censored scenes are saying half the time and the other half try to insist on the whole Yuuna was meant to die thing which I vehemently disagree with.

Just from going off the manga though they cut out the beach scene for time but re purpose the line when Cray is speaking to Elina just to twist the knife.
>>
>>3923789
Maybe later I might go find a Japanese LP and see if I could get the Japanese scene and see if someone here cpuld look at it. That scene just comes out of nowhere and seemed weird.
>>
>>3923849

I wouldn't really say it's out of nowhere. Remember the party is very much nearing the end game at this point and being trapped like they where they really have nothing but free time to unload on something. It's certainly abrupt but this is probably the only time Nina would have the chance to confide in you.

She runs up to him to tell him she has completed her mission. He looks at her and says her final mission is to help Ryu defeat Fou Lu. I've been playing through III for a bit. Just reached the part where I'm supposed to go in a volcano or some shit, with rock monsters I can't damage and are immune to weaken spells. So far it's been pretty average, nothing to yell home about. Can I jump straight ahead to IV? From what I've heard of that one it seems to be the one I'll enjoy the most.
>>
>>3924785
>. Can I jump straight ahead to IV?

The games are generally all stand alone with references thrown in here and there. The first three games ARE connected but nothing that requires you to play them all. 4 and 5 are standalone. Maybe. Popular fan theory has 4 as a very early prequel and 5 as a far sequeal to three but that's baseless conjecture at best.

You can skip to whatever point you want.
>>
>>3924785
>rock monsters I can't damage and are immune to weaken spells
You are supposed to burn (read: attack with FIRE-elemental magic or item) them first, you dimwit, it lowers their defense, but they'll retaliate. Or run when they're passive. It's called a WEAK fucking SPOT. Not everything is auto-attacks.

>So far it's been pretty average, nothing to yell home about
The reason for that lies within yourself because the aforementioned fact that you just simply do not try many things available to you and prefer a dumb-ass X mashing experience as you are the most anti-fun person on this planet. And the most ironic part of all of this is that you blame the game for that. You remind me of that fat fuck from a fatlus comic. Do whatever, no one cares, but take your entitlement and overestimated self-appraisal out of a fan meet-up. It's not a contrarian elitist recommendation thread lacking on substance.

Where should I start in the series? III or IV?
>>
>>3925196
2's okay, but 3 is a lot better, and a good starting point, I feel.
>>
>>3924785
I tried playing III but dropped it by the half way point. It was charming but it was just too slow. I recently started IV and fell in love with it. Its now one of my favorite jrpgs and playstation games, hell, maybe even games in general. For me IV was MUCH better then III, don't feel bad skipping it and going right into IV.
>>
>>3925037
>Use fire spells in a volcano. So intuitive

yeah, nah. That's bull shit.
>>
Finally finished IV, this may just be in my personal top ten. Combat was pretty fun and constantly flip flopping characters and strategies. Story was excellent. Characters were good and felt decently developed. When Elina asks Cray to kill her I got a little teary eyed. Not real tears but a little misty eyed. Soundtrack was good but nothing amazing though. Only real complaint is the end of chapter 3 is a bit of a slog with some pretty bad filler but the finale is amazing makimg up for it.

Would love to hear /vr/'s thoughts on it from their first time. Interested what people thought of it almost twenty years ago now.

They also said A-tur would have eaten him. It was back peddling. You know how I know it was back peddling? Not just because it fit the narrative perfectly but because THIS FUCKING SCENE RIGHT HERE.

If they intended to kill Yuuna but just couldn't they would have just had him scamper away never to be scene again. They didn't. The ended the game with him flaunting how he didn't learn a damn thing. They went out of the way to show how he was alive.

Not even the most melodramatic BoF game. Baby being fed on emotions for the first time after his birth remembers that moment most fondly, as expected. That doesn't apply to me, as I have played the series in my 20+ after playing countless of other titles. Sorry to break into your echo chamber, but that's enough of bullshitting. From this contrarian rag-tag team on the most forbidden board on the internet it may seem things are indeed as claimed, but should there be more to the table than just you, BoF4 supporter count wouldn't even break the mark of a 23-years-old game which fanbase should have been already eliminated by now by time alone. You guessed it right, Breath of Fire II is still talked about, and from what I have seen in the 2ch BoF general, courtesy of google translator, my BoF2 knowledge and intuition, it is prevailing in the discussion. Peace, faggots. Only on a lonely island of 4chins /vr/ there would be lonely autists who create threads about games they're playing out of a total loneliness, and only on a lonely island of 4chins /vr/ such epic breads would get replies from nobody but the same kind of autists.
