Does anyone actually play retro games on a fullscreen LCD TV? How does it look in contrast to playing on a CRT TV set? Do the games scale properly, or do they have black bars like on modern widescreen LCDs?
>>
>>3904613
What exactly is a "fullscreen LCD TV"?
>>
>>3904639
I assume they mean a display with a 4:3 aspect ratio. I used to play Dreamcast games on an old one but it's toast.
>>
>>3904639
From OP's picture i'd assume he maybe means 4:3 TFT displays?
>>
>>3904639

Are you having trouble seeing the OP image?

Are you aware that there are aspect ratios other than widescreen?

Were you born anytime before 2000?
>>
>>3904639
A 4:3 LCD like in the pic.
>>
I put my Mega Drive in one once. It was blurry, stretched, and overall terrible.
>>
>>3904639
Are you stupid or underage?
>>
>>3904613
>How does it look in contrast to playing on a CRT TV set?
Awful
>Do the games scale properly
No
>>
>>3904613
I have a korean zenith 4:3 lcd that was a display monitor in a mall kiosk. Looks better then a plain composite crt when its doing s-video or component or VGA.
>>
>>3904650
No problem seeing the image even though I was born in 69 and my eyes aren't what they used to be. That's a picture of a 4:3 LCD. In no reality is that called a "fullscreen LCD TV".

>>3904656
Neither. Project harder champ.
>>
>>3904639
>fullscreen
4:3
>widescreen
16:9
>>
>>3904650
>>3904656
>>3905264
No you little psxlets
Aspect ratios: 4:3, 16:9 etc
full screen: filling the entire screen
full screen/wide screen were terms used by media companies for cropped/pan and scan [4:3] or letterboxed [16:9] format.

If you ever had a vcr growing up you would fucking know this
>>
LCDs are just awful. There was some great video I can never find explaining why even old PC games look so much better on CRTs, because of the triad produced by a shadow mask, and how the games were designed for that subpixel alignment. Things that look fantastic and clear on a CRT look jagged and wrong on a more "accurate" LCD.
>>
>>3905327
If you'd just said 4:3 you could have avoided derailing your own thread.

Nice one.

As for your question, I'll hook up a dreamcast to one now and post a pic shortly.
>>
>>3904613
I play dreamcast on one and have played nes on one.the answer is it looks shitty.I played seaman on it forever thinking I was doing something wrong then I found out he had temperature and air gaues and stuff.I didnt know about it because my lcd cut that part of the screen off
>>
>>3905474
Your TV didn't have options to change the settings?

I like it much, much, much better. But I have always hated the picture quality and light that comes out of CRTs.

I wait with baited breath for Saturn emulation to get solid enough that I can say goodbye to them once and for all.

Is there is something that prevents you from setting aspect ratio on an emulator properly.
>>
>>3904613
Wasn't there a specific names for these kinds of TVs? I remember them looking like shit.
>>
i think anybody that grew up playing the likes of centipede or space invaders and games with graphics of that ilk will be a damn sight more forgiving when it comes to these kinda things. ive played on a few mishmash setups over the years and even with a little stretching or blur or you miss a few lines of pixels due to scaling the gameplay, the game itself doesnt change...

am i wrong?
>>
>>3906565
You're wrong. Things like centipede or space invaders ran on RGB CRTs. Even if they were old an blurry they couldn't match the washed out colors and motion blur of an old LCD. People who are focusing on the aspect ratio are missing the point. You can display 4:3 on a modern LCD. You don't have to stretch the image. But older 4:3 LCDs can not display a crisp smooth image.
>>
>>3906591
there's also the problem with 4:3 on modern LCDs. Old consoles didn't exactly do 4:3 and pixels weren't exactly square.
>>
>>3906591
>Even if they were old an blurry they couldn't match the washed out colors and motion blur of an old LCD
this isnt important in the long run you could play games on a shitty 5inch B+W tv/radio combo the game doesnt change
>>
>>3904613
Watch this video, it is enlightening.
I've decided that I'm going with CRT Shadow Mask TV because of it.

But if you like scanlines you should go with a Trinitron.

They should just give LCDs shadowmask orientation pixels.

Looking around to see if any pixel geometry was even attempting it other than straight lines. They might one day adopt an improved pixel geometry as more of as standard.

how good are the LCD monitors marketed at surveillance and have RGB/Component?

Did you get that from /crt/? I posted it there very recently.

Nice to see anons spreading it around. It explains things very well, notwithstanding the guy's thick french accent.

Yes, thanks for the video. It is great!

That's ok. Emubabies want to match the 8:7 "internal resolution" as close as possible. kek

Interesting.

Not a million miles away from what Fujifilm is offering at the other end of the industry (image capture rather than display).
>>
>>3904613
Yes I use a SNES and Genesis on a Sony Bravia LCD TV (it's a W705 series which supposedly has the lowest recorded input lag for an LCD) and a Framemeister in 720p 4:3 mode for perfect integer scaling.

I'm wondering about what screen to get for all kinds of gaming, including retro gaming. How much does UHD improve the looks of the crt-royale versus QHD? Is it higher resolution better to focus on for retro gaming than lower amount of lag?

Hey gramps, why don't you learn how to figure something out even with out complete scientific context?
>>
>>3909663
not that Jii-san but you can suck my balls.

"fullscreen LCD" prove you are clueless and can't do a basic search, and thanks to you been a cunt you thread is useless.
>>
>>3909663
Top kek kid. I can figure out your made up baby language. But it's a lot more fun to make fun of an underage who shouldn't even be posting here.

I play Doom on my 50 inch HDTV, but that's because I had just installed it for the raspberry pi and I'm too lazy to find any other monitor.

I wish these weren't so high, they'd be great for a mini arcade cabinet to play horizontal and vertical games with small bars on either sides. Vertical games look like ass on a 16:9 unless you turn it over.
>>
>>3904613
it looks good for FFVIII
