I can't recommend any of the hacks I've seen for Zelda II. They redo maps to make them artificially difficult for the sake of being difficult.

OK I'm trying it. It's fine so far. They play with the engine a bit to do clever tricks, nothing big so far though. The colors are dark because it's night or whatever, and that is ugly. The music is changed in a way that makes it slightly uglier. I'm playing the hard version and it is indeed rather hard. I'm partway through the first palace. No major objections yet. But it is really making me appreciate a nice readable color scheme, by withholding such from me.

Now I'm stuck on the first boss. I did some grinding but it's not enough. I need to figure out a safe way to attack this boss, but you don't get many tries before you have to start over. If I don't post again it'll be because I lost interest. Most people probably shouldn't play the hard version of this hack.

All right I beat that boss and explored a lot of new territory. I spent a long while at it. This seems like a good game. It feels like the original, only harder (so far). It seems to be respectably well put together and does not contain any Pokemon references.

The hard version is still too hard though. I'm not stuck anymore, but I don't know whether I will ever finish it. It's a lot of work. If you use save states then it's not too big a deal though.
