I started laughing so hard when I saw the Wind Fish was a whale.
Fish aren't whales, Nintendo.
Was there any quality control on this game at all?
Japanese don't know science.
It seems like an autistic thing to care about
>>3900292
That is what made it a twist. Whales don't come from eggs, either.
References to the "wind fish" in the game seemed mysterious, because it's hard to imagine a magical godlike fish that can dream. If it had been called the "big fucking whale" you would've been picturing it the whole time and it would lose its mythological wonder. Whales are actually intelligent and invoke the impression of a Leviathan, so the wind fish appearing that way is appropriate.
Think of it as an ancient name based on a dead language or something. It's evocative but ultimately metaphorical.
>>3900340
This is a pretty good explanation actually.
>>3900292
>THE WIND FISH IN
>NAME ONLY, FOR
>IT IS NEITHER.
Did you even play the game?
>>3900292
>Jellyfish aren't fish, WTF biologists?!
This is what you sound like.
>>3900292
So, it says that this is the Wind Fish. Wind... FISH. And look. It's a whale. Perfect.
...WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!?
I mean, did a human being actually make this shitty game?
Ughh, my head hurts.
>>3900448
Come ON, developers! Get with the PROGRAM!
>>3900292
there's no such thing as a fish OP. get with the times
>>3900881
somebody's a bit hormonal this evening
>>3900292
The Japanese name for the wind fish is 風の魚, (egg raying no wharu) which means egg laying whale. The translators just fucked it up because they take liberties.
>>3900292
Why does he have a carpet on his head?
>>3900340
This.
It made it all the much cooler when it was revealed it was a huge fucking whale.
>>3900985
in french it's called "Poisson Rêve" (dream fish)
Because "wind whale" sounds stupid?
>wind anything
>has nothing to do with the wind
Is it ever said to explicitly be a whale? I know it LOOKS like a whale, but that doesn't mean it is in the Zelda universe.
>>3900292
You wanted them to call it the wind mammal? Or did u want a big goldfish ogling at you at the end instead?
>>3901245
It's all a dream, it could be a rabbit for all we know. Like when you have a dream your girlfriend is talking to you but it's just a dog with her voice. Anything goes.
>>3901110
He met aladdin xD
>>3901234
It's up in the air n shiet nikka. Kinda like wind lol
>>3900985
>egg raying no wharu
Holy fuck hahaha
>>3900394
Came to post this.I suspect OP just wanted to start a LA thread with a silly OP
What's the deal with the Wind Fish? He's not a fish, and he doesn't generate wind. And what's with those wings anyway? Those are not biologically feasible. He's not even using them to fly! And what's with the Persian rugs on his back? Since when did whales need to wear clothes? Was his whale song so lackluster, he had to go that extra mile?
>>3901462
*insert laughter of varying intensity after each sentence*
>>3900394
IT IS SPECIES FLUID!
>>3902774
The game was released in 1993, not this decade.
>>3900394
Came just to post this. But as long as I'm here, I recently learned the following from Wikipedia:
"[Takashi] Tezuka intended the game's world to have a similar feeling to the American television series Twin Peaks, which, like Link's Awakening, features characters in a small town. He suggested that the characters of Link's Awakening be written as "suspicious types", akin to those in Twin Peaks—a theme which carried over into later Zelda titles."
Was it a good thing in the long run? I wanna say yes.
>>3902842
This right here. The game was meant to have a weird dreamlike quality to it, which went on to inspire Majora's Mask.
>>3900292
Fuck you mean I'm not a fish white boy, sheeeiiiiiittttt
>>3902842
>Was it a good thing in the long run? I wanna say yes.
Hell, one of the best moments in the game is Link questioning the villagers about the origins of the town, when they came to the island, etc even though it's just a simple flip to a second set of NPC banter it recolors the entire game in a different light.
>>3900985
lol what? It literally translates as "wind's fish" or "fish of wind."
>>3900292
The real question is, who tattooed the wind fish? I doubt he did it to himself with those tiny little flippers.
>>3901110
To protect it from Japanese whalers.
>>3900292
I started laughing so hard when I saw a kid on the internets sperg out over this
>>3903792
Those aren't tattoos, those are his pants.
>>3901284
>>3901245
Skyward Sword kind of has its origin, maybe.
>>3904413
That thing's not nearly as sexy
Is jabu-jabu related to the Wind Fish?
>Wind Fish
>Whale
>Fish aren't whales, Nintendo.
>Nintendo
>Japan
>They eat whale in Japan just like fish.
Japanese word for whale and fish is the same.

I had a good chuckle. Thanks anon, I needed it!
>>3905483
So a whale to them is just a capital letter fish? A bigger version of a fish? That's pretty neat.
>>3905903
Not that capital. Like a city that's a capital.
>>3906292
>Both capital and capitol are derived from the Latin root caput, meaning “head.”
Huh, so it's like the head fish, the boss fish. That's cool too.
In the Japanese version, they just called it dinner!
>>3904939
>>3905101
Tfw Nintendo promotes bestiality.
>>3900292considering link is knocked out and hallucinating shit, logic has no place in the game anyway.
but then you haven't played the game anyway, so why do you care?
>>3904519
No but it's definitely the same thing as the leviathan from Skyward Sword.
>>3900292
>implying that is not a "fish" that breathes air, which in turn happens to be wind
>implying the game is not abou whale hunting
Fucking just play the game and don't take things as literal as they may seem.
>>3907114
The Chinese, which the Japanese is derived from, is derived from 帝. Meaning emperor or god. The distinction being a modern invention. So yeah. A huge battleship boss fish is approaching is pretty accurate.
>>3907167
lel. Wale actually tastes pretty nasty. I don't know why anyone eats it. Dolphin on the other hand. Well let's just say tuna hasn't tasted the same since dolphin free because the norm.

It's got to do with Japanese folk lore of flying whales. There are a couple of games with flying whales in them. Also by the way, when I google whales in games I just get hits of fatasses lol
>>3900985

>>3913076
Not sure about japanese folklore, but now that you mention it, there's flying whales in Jumping Flash 2, always felt very surreal
