But seriously, superior accuracy + firepower as an upgrade to the pistol would be great. Nobody used that shitty thing after you grabbed the chaingun anyway, so giving it a little utility as a long-range weapon wouldn't help.

Doomguy is already a perfect shot with a pistol so why change? This isn't some modern shooter with "realistic" random spread.

Initially the starting weapon was going to be a single fire rifle such as the one zombiemen have, I suppose when they changed it to a pistol they didn't bother changing the sprite
