I'm glad we didnt get the disk system actually, the format seems like a nightmare to collect for these days. I've heard that you could overwrite the regular games at those kiosks, so even though you bought Zelda and it says Zelda on the disk, its not actually Zelda thats stored on there. It just seems really flimsy too.

It made sense for a Japanese market. For Europe and the US, Atari, Commodore, Apple, PC all used standard floppy drives and disks. It would have been a hard sell making people buy proprietary drives which couldn't be used with anything else.

That's actually a pretty legit reason. Game rentals were outlawed in japan. It made for a great used market there, but here stateside we could just rent a game for a weekend.

Yeah, a big part of the concept of the FDS was as a substitute for game rentals but since it had the added benefit of giving Nintendo the data about how often a game was written, some games that might have ended up as "Disk Writer exclusives" saw retail release as a result. The world of Disk Writer exclusive collecting is a shadowy one for sure.

If it's write protected that's probably a good indication it hasn't been overwritten. Or, you know, overwrite whatevers there with Zelda.
But then you'd know deep down that the magnetic bits stored on it weren't the original ones Miyamoto personally put there with his magnetic dick 30 years ago. And you'd feel like a dirty little rom playing whore and cry yourself to sleep at night because of it.
