If you count bootlegs, then I would say Kart Fighter and World Heroes 2 for the NES. Both bootleg fighting games, but they are surprisingly good for bootlegs.

You should get Super Mario Bros 2 Japan. Totally underrated game and far better than what we got in the west back then! Parrot this to you and all your facebook friends! Repeat me: "did you know that Super Mario Bros. 2 is actually a reskin of Doki Doki Pothole Panic?". I bet you'll get a ton of upboats with this!

Battletoads.

Batman Returns on NES by Konami is generally overlooked.

It was overshadowed by Returns on SNES, and by Batman (1989) by Sunsoft and that awful style-over-substance Returns of the Joker, but it's actually a really good beat em up.

Do you like the overhead levels of Super C? Then you'll like Heavy Barrel, which is a full game like that, co-op included.

Astérix and The Smurfs are quality platformers. They're nothing extraordinary but they're generally overlooked because they are PAL exclusives. Set your emulator to PAL. If you're using a flashcart with an NTSC system, they'll be playing faster than they should.

If we're talking Famicom now:
- Spartan X 2, really good beat em up.
- Getsu Fūma Den. action adventure à la Zelda 2 with also some "faux 3D" parts (there is an item that turns the light in those segments, use it or you'll never pass them). Konami re-used the engine of this game to make TMNT1 so it'll feel familiar, except with better gameplay balance than TMNT1 imo.
- Kyattou Ninden Teyandē. Samurai Pizza Cats action platformer. Tons of characters with different abilities to switch to.
- Moai Kun. Puzzle paltformer. If you know Toki Tori, they seemed to have taken a lot of inspiration from this game.
- Moon Crystal. Action platformer with Ninja Gaiden style cutscenes and Prince Of Persia style character animations.

And there there is always the obvious: Shatterhand, Shadow Of The Ninja, Kickmaster, S.C.A.T, Journey To Silius, etc

Dragon Spirit: The New Legend is bretty good desu senpai.
Also, Toki is a decent port that's often overlooked. Had lots of fun playing it.

This. May I add that if you play them on NTSC, the graphics will be garbled because of timing differences between NTSC and PAL (At least on Astérix. Smurfs is alright save for a few levels, the bridge and Gargamel's house IIRC).
While we're on the subject of PAL games, Dropzone is a decent Defender clone. I had quite some fun with it the other day

Megaman 5 is probably my favorite, almost certainly due to the music.

2 may have the most iconic music track, but 5 had great music throughout the whole game and it was wonderful. It really made it enjoyable to play and fond to think of
