Basically, it was the localized umbrella term for Megaten/Megami Ibunroku (I think that's the term) games. Only P1 and Revelations: The Demon Slayer got the treatment, and the series went unlocalized stateside until Nocturne came out after the weeaboom of the late 90s/early 00s made it more viable to localize.

Persona 2 is an excellent game that I don't think I'm ever going to replay unless someone makes a hack that reduces the encounter rate and makes combat a shitload faster. I felt like I was going insane towards the end because of how badly I wanted to progress the story but I was being forced to endure literally hours of wasted time, it was like running through a swamp.

Persona 1 is an excellent game that falls short strictly for the slow and tedious combat. This is fixed in the PSP port where you can speed combat up significantly. Great characters, great story, two alternate routes, and alternate party members.

Persona 2 had a better story, but the combat is still terrible. We got the enhanced version of Innocent Sin, but because Eternal Punishment (PS1) was localized a decade beforehand, Atlus USA got lazy and just said "fuck it", rereleasing the inferior and poorly localized PS1 version on PSN. Get the fan translation for EP if you can.

P1 had decent combat and story but the encounter rate is too high considering how long battles can go for.
P2 had a great story but braindead combat with an even worse encounter rate. I really wish they would make a p2 anime or something so I don't have to beat those shitty games to experience the story..

The Persona 1 remake is tricky because it improves a lot of things but then fucks up others, like the soundtrack.

Granted, on paper I think the new soundtrack is very good, but compared to the original it doesn't fit the game very well at all, and you don't even have the option to switch between OSTs as far as I am aware.

With that in mind it's hard for me to recommend one version of P1 over the other. Really just up to preference.

SMT spinoff meant for more casual players. The first two games do a really bad job of distancing themselves from their mother series, keeping the demon conversations and using a take it or leave it almost-SRPG battle system.

Persona (PSP) is fine, if a bit linear. You can get along well without needing any fancy fusions which makes the game feel quite easy, all things considered. The dungeon themes are hype as fuck but most tracks (although they are catchy) have a tendency to not match the tone of the game. The OST was cut down and scenes that didn't share tracks in the original now do.

The PSX version is alright if you're fine with the quite amusing localization that make the characters a lot more likable IMO. Keep in mind they cut out an alternate route and made it easier.

Persona 2 moves away from SMT a bit more, ditching the gamelong depressing tone and having more fun. The graphics and art are better, you run into a lot more interesting situations, dungeons are no longer in first-person, the characters are likable, the plot is engaging from very early on and overall it's a much better, easier game to play.

The encounter rate, battle system and demon convo system still bog it down though. The PSP version is an all-around upgrade. It's a shame EP didn't get localized.

P3 and P4 fix the gameplay but in a way that it negatively affects the more "traditionally important" aspects of a JRPG. Also, weeb pandering. P5 is a great balance between P1/P2 and P3/P4.

I bought Persona 5 today because of this thread, I'm having a TON of fun with it. The story is a lot deeper than I thought, I assumed it was a teen game. Already it starts with suicide.

All of them are some kind of mythological or urban legend figure (like Thor or Mothman) and their in game appearances are based and designed on different depictions of that being. Mara for example is a figure from Sri Lankan buddhist mythology and the dick on a chariot appearance is a combination of the fact that Mara is depicted as a demon who was riding Girimehkala with a penis-headed image and who tried to stop Siddharta Gautama from reaching enlightenment as well as the fact the Japanese word "mara" is slang for a penis.
