it never looked like that for me since i only played the other sonic games on the system.
>>

That's because you posted the Master System version of Sonic 2.

The Game Gear version of Sonic 2 was much worse and made the antlion boss almost impossible.
>>
>>3893496

I got past the antlion boss but then died pretty quickly in the hang gliding level that follows.
>>
I never liked any GG game even when the console was relevant... I don't know how every single game for an entire handheld ends up being bad, but it seemed to be the case for the GG. I mean, I'm sure some of the puzzle games were probably "playable", but that's not saying much...

Super Columns is criminally overlooked. Simply the best game in the series.

Also, there's a Game Gear port of Dragon Crystal, one of the earlier console roguelikes. Kind of odd that it used a different translation than the SMS version though.
>>
>>3893628
what does this Columns do that the other ones don't?
>>
>>3893661

It has a few additional gameplay mechanics:
>Multi-functional magic gems. The magic gems in regular Columns will simply remove all gems of the same color as the one touched. Super Column's magic gems can also flip the board upside-down, or take out all gems that appear above a certain elevation.

>The ability to rotate columns in addition to cycling them.

>Lantern gems. Matching three of these will destroy all gems along the same intersection. Matching 5 or more lanterns in one move clears every gem from the board simultaneously.

>Sand columns that act as a penalty against you and opponents. Sand columns are also used in Flash puzzle mode.

>Flash puzzle mode is more elaborate than in the original SMS / GG Columns. It consists of 10 stages with preset patterns that you have to clear.

>A story mode that pits you against several NPCs.

>The ability to cast spells during versus matches / story mode. Spells are powered up by the number of chain reactions you create.

Sonic on Game Gear?

I remembered watching a "super play" of it on the shitty "geek xD" TV channel in my country.

The guy claimed he found something wasn't documented "anywhere on the internet". IIRC you had to beat the entire game without EVER getthing hit, I don't remember if it gave a score bonus or something different in the ending.

>Why would you play the GG version?

I don't want the same the Game Gear ports of any of the Sonic titles are necessarily improvements, but there were revisions between the two. Aside from having more stable frame rates, they had new music or more refined stages / bosses in some cases.

Of course, you have to put up with a more restrictive POV...

You know what it reminds me of visually? Donkey Kong Country/Land.
>>
>>3895617
Probably because of the pre-rendered look.
It is somewhat impressive that they pulled it off though.
Shame about the gameplay.
Also, I am personally split on Sonic 1 being better on Game Gear or SMS.
I personally played both, and I agree on the points that Johnny makes in his SGB play.
>>
>>3895602
>What backward country are you from?

I don't know about that anon, but SMS unfortunately wasn't that popular in the States. Although my household had one, we always had trouble finding games for it. There's just too much that wasn't published here.
>>
>>3895642
What makes the GG version good?
>>
>>3895646
Oh, you're American. That explains it. You got fucked over with video games.
>>
>>3895652
Has some alterations from the SMS version.
Some of which are better, one being the second (?) area of Jungle which has you climb up a series of platforms.
If you fall below the screen line on the SMS in this section, you fucking die, regardless of if there was solid ground underneath you or not. This is the only time this shit happens in the fucking game. In the GG version, this shit is thankfully removed.
There was also an emerald in one of the labyrinth stages (since they aren't technically "Zones" in-game) where you would have to retain invincibility from the box power-up and jump into spikes to grab the emerald, which I thought was pretty clever. In the GG version they just put it near the start of the stage, with no traps or enemies around it. Some feel this was better because they didn't like the way the sms version did it, but I honestly liked that one.
Robotnik / EGGMAN can be hit more easily during certain fights in the GG version due to screen crunch. In the SMS version, you have to work around the current boss gimmick, even if it's just waiting. I feel this is a bit cheap on the GG version, since the SMS version isn't exactly hard.
And so on. Also, I believe that, screen-crunch aside, the sprites and maps were also adjusted for the GG version to accommodate for the pre-mentioned screen crunch. Sonic himself is definitely smaller if nothing more.
>>
>>3895642
It's also somewhat heavier and slower like DKC/L.
>>
>>3895653
>You got fucked over with video games.
Nah, we got all the good games on Nintendo, while you had to deal with generic garbage on Amiga and Sega. Sucks to have been a Europoor in the retro days.

This is a bad game. The ugly colors and the pre-rendered graphics don't go well together. Also, awful controls and level design.
Brazil got a Master System port that is even worse, even though it had a bigger screen.

I feel bad when I play it. I can feel that the game was just a quick hack job to make a quick buck using Sonic name. And the colors of the Brazilian Master System port make it worse. Actually the very existence of a fuckin' Brazilian Master System port saddens me deeply, like every Brazilian exclusive shitty port for some underpowered console dead to the rest of the world.
Poor (and dumb) kids, dumb (and poor) parents, they fed the Tectoy monster. Now the poor kids grew into nostalgia obsessed apes that idolize Tectoy.

Oh, and why no one recreated GG and MS Sonic games using Genesis games engine? Yeah, romhacks.

>>3893491
>>3893496
I always wondered why Robotnik saves Sonic from the lava and then tries to kill him straight after. But then ends up killing the antlion himself in the end...
>>
>>3897401
Robotnik is so egotistical he wouldn't accept victory where he had to do nothing. Or maybe he really, really, wanted to test out his antlion bot after going through all the effort of building it.

And the final attack is just his desperation when he ran out of bombs.

It was pretty sweet to bring sonic 2 with you if you left the house for a long time as a kid.
>>
>>3898296
I would rather play original GG games, rather than the ones ported to it from the Master System, as the ports are always far worse than the MS originals. Master System IIs were dirt cheap in the early 90s, so there's no excuse.
>>
>>3893542
The Aleste games are really good.
>>
>>3896416
Yeah but '06 is less game and more unfinished tech demo.
>>
>>3893552
It suffers from some critical flaws making it almost unenjoyable. I tried to like it, but it's just insufferable, even for an 8 bit RPG. The closest equivalent I could find is FF2.
>>
>>3895886
>Now the poor kids grew into nostalgia obsessed apes that idolize Tectoy.
Not very nice considering bongs do the same with the Spectrum.
>>
>>3894123

I was born in 1986 and was an avid Genesis gamer (would even argue for it in dumbass console war arguments during recess, lol). I didn't know the Master System even existed until I started emulating games in high school, and even then I thought it was just a different name for the Genesis like Mega Drive at first. So from my perspective, there was only ever a GG version.

Did Master System never come to the US? Or maybe the marketing/production department in the US dropped it pretty fast after the success of Genesis? I have never in my life ever met a single person IRL who has a Master System.
>>
>>3898349
>Master System IIs were dirt cheap in the early 90s, so there's no excuse.
And yet nobody carried them. And nobody knew they existed. The NES trounced the Master System to the point most people didn't even know it was a thing.
>>
>>3899562

My household had one. There just weren't any games published here. And they certainly weren't cheap. The prices rivaled even Nintendo.

Computer games were generally shit compared to Japanese console games. There was no quality control or piracy prevention, so nobody really took computer game development seriously. The few that did (Rareware) jumped onto the console gravy train.
>>
>>3899718
There was no quality control for consoles, just a pay wall. All it did was jack up the price of shit games.
>>
>>3899718
Nice anecdote.
I watched every episode of AVGN and can easily call what you said bullshit.

The open computer market gave a lot of great games, piracy even when hurting developers still gave a lot of people access to games otherwise unacceptable to some and was great advertisment. A lot of todays game development studios where computer game developers of the time.
