I remember reading about this game back in the day. How is it? Is it a fair challenge or does it have insane difficulty curve?
Which PD is that? I never knew there was one in English.

The one published for DOS in 1995 by MegaTech Software. Don't know which entry in the series would that be.
Power DoLLS is a generally solid series of J-PC wargames, buoyed by its glamorous girls. Kogado Soft made some other cool simulation games in that period, like Schwarzschild (high sci-fi fleet warfare + grand strategy) and Mars Project (strategic Sim-game but on Mars).

They localized the very first PD.

Eh, not close to SRW in most way. It's designed from a tank wargame perspective, and so it's challenging from the start. There's something of a backstory revealed through mission descriptions across the games, which really is the majority of text involved. (Schwarzschild has more story involved, at least starting with its third installment).
OG Power DoLLS got a recent Windows remake, and 3 through 6 released on Windows also. I'm not sure how difficult it would be to hack the PC-98 versions.

From the youtube videos, it seemed like sort of a Front Mission-esque game, but I probably looked at the 3th or 4th game. Now that I'm seeing the original, it's indeed pretty different from SRW. I saw that PD 6 was fully 3D, pretty interesting.

Is this series popular? From what I've read it has regular releases of games up to this day, but it doesn't seem to be well known outside of Japan.

3 and 4 use something akin to a real-time-with-pause battle system, which is why they stand out from 1, 2 and 5. There's definitely emphasis on customizing your Dolls to fit each mission, but I'm not sure it's comparable to Front Mission.
6 was, apparently, a critical disaster for Kogado, and probably too over-budget for them by the mid-2000s.

It's renowned amongst J-PC wargamers and one of the best known series in its category, but its popularity has waned for some time. /vr/ likes at least the DOS game, and I think it's worthwhile to check out the others. Usually this game comes up in discussions about the few localized PC-98 games, or abandonware in general.
