Last weekend, I went to a spectacular arcade show with 800+ pinball machines. Surely there are still enough cool people on /vr/ to keep a pinball thread going for at least 50 posts.
To start, tell me your favorite era of games and manufacturer from that era. Then, tell me one of your favorite games that's from another manufacturer.
The Williams System 11 games are my favorite. They have the perfect balance of the old school scoring systems and the modern modes and features. They also have the greatest themes/artwork, and fantastic music.
For a favorite non-Williams game, definitely Haunted House from Gottlieb. It was at the show this year, but not working any of the days. I'm starting to think Gottlieb must have worked with actual ghosts and demons to make this game, and the black magic is responsible for all the maintenance problem. Black Hole and Spirit were working great though, so that's cool.

Are you me? Couldn't have said it better myself. Pic related are my personal tables.
>favorite non-Williams game
That's a hard one. Probably either the Data East Tales from the Crypt or Gottliebs Gladiator. Tbf I haven't played a ton of non Williams/bally tables or if I did it usually wasn't for long.
Is there any way to get into this hobby with a not-junk table, and that doesn't involve:
>auctions
>extreme luck/"connections"
>not being a poorfag
?
I always loved pinball, but the prices are insane.
>>3879835
>Are you me?
To some degree I must be, all three of those are games I'd love to own, especially Swords of Fury. One of the coolest, most under-appreciated games ever, and one of the best examples of Williams' dungeons and dragons heavy metal style they were so good at.
Pic related was at the show too, and working much better this year. Damn good fun, and excellent BGM, the organs during King of the Hill give me chills.

>One of the coolest, most under-appreciated games ever
It does have a decent following but I agree it definitely is under appreciated. Going to go on a limb here and say it has the best music in a pinball game ever.

>Banzai Run
It's confirmed. We were separated at birth lol. Banzai Run is the next pin I want to pick up. Going to take a couple years to save up my dollarydoos(just recently purchased Cyclone so I'm broke) and will probably have to sell off a few of my toys but I plan on it taking the place of my F14.
bought party zone from my friend last summer and i love it, next i want elvira or maybe mousin around
>>3879924
Cool, I've never seen Party Zone IRL, or Party Animal or Elvira either. There's a comic book store near me that has Dr. Dude, which is a lot of fun, and the closest we'll get to Bill & Ted's Excellent Pinball.
>>3879889
Maybe I'll feel different in 5 years but as of right now I couldn't imagine selling my SoF. The table art, call outs, music, and play are top notch. Only complaint I have is the backglass. Not that it's terrible but it's a 6/10 when everything else is a 10/10(IMO*).
>>3879981
Meant to say:
8-10/10 instead of just 10/10
So, what do you guys think of Black Knight 2000 purely from a gameplay standpoint? We all know the music is fantastic and the artwork is good, but what about how it plays?
I think it's a good game, but after playing it more recently, I'm really starting to notice how "one-sided" it is. Nearly every important shot is on the right flipper, and it can get pretty repetitive. Someone here was saying a while back how Bride of Pinbot was a one-shot game, but I think Black Knight 2000 might suffer from it more.
I think the old Black Knight is overall better. There are lots of targets on the left and right, and the upper playfield actually has another pair of flippers rather than just a cross shot.
>>3881782
I agree that Black Knight is very one-sided. I find it to be more of a single shot game than Pinbot, though. Pinbot just is repetitive. Learn the pattern and you can basically play it in your sleep.
>>3879782
The double table action on Haunted House is awesome. I hope you can get to play it sometime!
Anyone here ever get to play Tommy? If so, anyone know of an active public machine anywhere?
I nearly beat it a few years ago while out on a trip. I died during "See Me, Hear Me". I can't remember where I saw it and have not seen the table again since.
>>3881793
I did get to play Haunted House last year. Seeing it and Black Hole for the first time IRL surprised me with how deep the lower playfield is in the cabinet.

Arcade Expo?
And I agree, System 11 games are top tier. I might have more DMD-era games in my favorites, but overall System 11's hit that sweet spot for me. Might be because I associate a lot DMD games with mode grinding.
My favorite non-Williamsand /vr/game is probably Metallica. I don't care for the band, but it has fun rules
Medieval Madness is my favourite
>>3881805
>Arcade Expo?
Yes, the third time I went.
I was actually playing Metallica today at a local place, but the sound was too low. I'm not a huge fan of Metallica in particular, but I do like heavy metal in general, so it's a cool theme.
>>3881802
Oh yeah. It sort of makes you wonder how they wedged in all the machinery to make the table work! It also explains why it breaks down so often.
>>3881782
If you like the original Black Knight, you should try out Grand Lizard if you get a chance.
Anyone here good with pinball repair?
I've got a CFTBL that hard crashes whenever a large amount of stuff happens, like starting multiball or hitting one of the features that lights up the whole board.
Anyone know what the problem is likely to be?
>>3881805
>My favorite non-Williams and /vr/...
We can talk about newer pinball/arcade. It's one of the few exceptions allowed here.
>>3881904
I've played Grand Lizard, as well as all of the System 7 Magna-Save games. Solar Fire is my favorite.
>>3879782
that is a sleek looking room. I like it.
>>3883662
A shot looking down the 80s aisle. Williams on the left, Bally on the right.
>>3883730
...and never the two will mix! Kidding.
>>3879782
Dallas? What about Spooky Game #3? What about Houdini? What about Bride of Pinbot 25th Edition? Don't be holding out the facts, we need details.

Always a lot of wheelchair dudes at pinball festivals / shows. I wonder if there's some sort of ramp–stand that could allow proper playing height, like the little kids stand on to play but for wheelchair dudes.
Anyone play Aerosmith yet?
>>3884045
Won't play a new Stern until Gary fixes playfield issues.
>>3883979
No, Banning California. None of those games were there, either
>>3884045
Aerosmith and Batman 66 were both there, but I didn't get a chance to play either of them.
I did try pic related for the first time, and I thought it was great. Of course it was fun like the real EM games are, but the theme and artwork really reminded me of the "character" of the WMS games, like White Water or Fish Tales. I have a feeling it's not something that will show up at every location though, given that it's one big innuendo.
>>3884226
>Batman 66
You're not missing much. Aesthetically, it's great, but there's a huge fucking area with a random magnet feature that drained my ball about 2/3 of the time. I got really bored playing around it. It's like the table was designed around making a third of the field unplayable.
>>3884084
>new Stern
Only Star Trek is worth playing anyway. It's great.
>>3884283
What about Ghostbusters?
>>3884283
Isn't Batman 66 just a reskin of the older Batman machine?
>>3884289
Doesn't look like it, it just shares the franchise and the crane toy.
>>3884294
I guess it's more like what Star Trek is to TNG. Mostly the same layout, with some changes here and there.
>>3883986
That place is shit now. Sold all the good games and jacked up all the prices. Hired passive aggressive spergs and fired the pinball enthusiasts.
>>3884285
>Ghostbusters
Forgot about that one. Haven't had the opportunity to play it. My local arcade is pretty up to date on machines, so it's weird that they skipped Ghostbusters and got Batman.
>>3879835
>Sword of Fury
Dat mother fuckin LION MAN
>>3885708
L I O N M A N
I just recently "got" the ruleset for SoF. The Lionman bonus quickly gets up to one million and will stay there for the rest of the game, pretty good.
>Let's put the mode start at the top of this ramp.
>That's not cool enough, it needs to be a full-blown jump.
>And let's throw in this spinner at the foot of the ramp for no reason.
>Now let's just hope the operator replaces these weak flipper coils on a monthly basis.
Thanks, Lord of the Rings.
dont really have a favorite era, I really like them all! But in my personal collection, it would probably be the DMD era. 9 of games have them (doctor who, Guns N' Roses, whitewater, twilight zone, Tommy, roadshow, Gilligans island, Jurassic park, judge Dredd). Next would be alpha-numeric (Funhouse, whirlwind, earthshaker), then electromechanical (midway shooting gallery, Williams double play, united 17' bowling alley) I'm simply out of room at this point, and games have skyrocketed since I started collecting.

The problem with a ramp is that it's not incredibly portable.
You'd need close to 3 feet of actual ramp, then a couple more feet of flat platform. Something like that might work in a showroom like that at a convention (workers/volunteers could move the ramps as needed, and there's a decent amount of room) but I doubt it would be practical for many businesses.
I like pinball but live in a country with like 3 tables total in public so i have to play them in videogame form.
>>3890453
What's your favorite pinball video game?
I'm a casual, but I'm on the hunt for a pinball machine that I used to destroy back in the day.
It was a Space/Alien machine, had UFO's and maybe some cow being sucked up in some digital image display or something, played the fuck out of it. Had one at the local comic shop around here 10+ years ago
>>3890923
>>3890957
That doesn't seem familiar. It was more comical and lighthearted.
Been working on my doctor who since the mini playfield motor took a crap. What a pain in the ass. But I'm taking the time to modify the game a bit. Doing something similar to the pic.
>>3890969
You can't get more comical and lighthearted than Revenge From Mars. There's a gag where one of the Martians disguises itself as a head of broccoli.
>>3891225
I vividly remember a cow in a UFO beam.
Is there a database of highest scores?
>>3890969
Revenge from mars is comical and light hearted, same with Attack From Mars
>>3891298
They don't mean much. Games can be made extra easy to increase scoring, increase how many balls, etc....
>>3891557
Ah yeah you're right. I guess it just comes down to each individual machine.
>>3891292
Legit. Thanks.
>>3891292
Destroying a saucer doesn't have as much oomph without that physical toy rattling around.
>>3891936
And the pulsing lights. Revenge has wackier scenarios though.
>>3879782
>ywn have a personal Addams Family table
sucks man
>>3891964
Never say never. Addams Family isn't a hard game to find, so you just need a few extra thousands in your wallet. Now Big Bang Bar, that's a game you'll never own.
>>3893962
Kingpin, that's a game you'll never own.

Party Zone was my favourite table at my local pinball place, but it disappeared last year.
Bride of Pinbot would be improved immensely if the one billion shot was worth one hundred million instead.
People say that it's a one-shot game, but there are several different ways to score millions, like the center loop and the jackpot. It's just that once you have at least one billion, nothing else is worth it.
I feel that if 100mil was the highest scoring shot, the rest of the playfield's awards would be more desirable, and the game would be much, much better.
Fuck my highscore for Balls of Steel Barbarian disappeared

Perfect for long commutes.
What's the oldest table you've ever played? For me, Gottlieb's Big Casino from 1961. I really want to get to the Pinball Hall of Fame in Vegas, I think they have a few even older games.
