Shigeru Miyamoto's been harping on about a multiplayer Mario for ages, but in a recent interview with Wired.com he revealed there was planned to be two-player support for Super Mario 64, but that it was scrapped.

The code for how the camera would work was still left in the game. Some guy completed it, added in Luigi, and made a multiplayer mod. It's pretty janky, you can see why it wasn't realized, but it's fun. A game like Mario 64 could only fully work in multiplayer if both players had their own screen. Screens are getting quite wide and systems are getting more powerful (unless it's Nintendo), so on modern hardware you could easily make Mario 64 co-op.
