Probably related with the copyright issues with the Silicon Knights.
Crystal Dynamics managed to preserve all the rights for the sequels.
Soul Reaver was never intended to a Legacy of Kain game, but the management wanted to cash in on the IP.

I remember playing this for about 5 hours before dropping it. The dungeons and boss fights were godawful- ugly and samey.
I honestly just played it so I would have proper background knowledge for Soul Reaver.
