Unremarkable mascot platformer for the SNES, Game Boy and Genesis. Hoppin Mad is an Amiga sequel. I cannot overstate how vanilla these games are.

It's fun. The levels are very well designed, the music is great, the bosses are a lot of fun to fight, the control is perfect, and Sparkster (the main character) is cute and has some pretty cute animations instead of having 'tude, but yet he somehow manages to be pretty badass at the same time.
It's basically an A+ all around.
You can't fight the true last boss and get true ending unless you play on Hard, though.

only took off because at the time, early-mid 90s, the 2d platformer had been done countless times and everyone was impatient for the new 3d craze. If you like 2d platformers I definitely say give this one a go. It has great graphics, music, challenge, and plenty of secrets to keep you hooked.

Btw, for some reason this game went against the grain and completely switched around the controls relative to most platformers of the day. I didn't know there was a run button for the longest time!

I see people hate on this game way too much. They either don't like it because it isn't RKA or because they're SNES fanboys and feel the need to attack this game since it shares the same name with SNES Sparkster.

What I like about this game compared to other two is that it's much faster and the boost system is superior IMO. The only real flaw with this game is that it feels like it didn't get enough production time and that the game is only 90% complete.

Yeah. Though they share a lot of the same music tracks, however the instrumentation used for the SNES version is a lot worse in comparison.

This whole fucking series.

They were popular back in the day and now it seems they were forgotten in favor of other more popular series like Mario or Megaman.
But fuck, Adventure Island are some of the best platformer games I've played, especially from 2 onwards. 1 is cool, it's Wonder Boy and that was a good arcade game, but the later ones by Hudson are platforming delicatessen.

I don't know if it's because I played the Genesis version first, but I couldn't really get into the SNES version. The rocket boost was pretty restricted, and the game just felt slower.

Also the character sprites look like bad copies of the Genesis versions.
