because in the nineties, "gross-out" was a popular trend in cartoons. That and they really wanted to emphasize that Wario was a villainous charcter to give the games novelty over regular Mario games.

Some people definitely will -even if it's just for the sake of doing it- but I think it's the best one. A lot of content, detailed and smooth animations, very enjoyable boss fights, an OST with a lot of variation with the main theme and a story that actually feels unique and works without it being the same "be the hero and save the kingdom" or "save the damsel in distress" trope. It's even got a time attack mode where you have to collect all the keys and the nearest exit, how can you NOT like all of that?

That was only revealed in the ending. Besides, it's not like Wario ever cared about the people living in it (he didn't even know there were people over there in the first place). He only did it for the treasures, just like he always does in the Wario Land games.
