Let's talk about retro PC hardware. I've unearthed a shoebox full of old VGA cards and it's making me want to dig up one of my old PCs and set it up with some DOS/win95 games.
Some of them were wrapped in newspaper and labeled. Those should be the good ones, but what should I be looking for? Are Voodoo 3 cards the best, or are they too new?

What's the ultimate retro gaming PC? It feels like a ridiculous question because all this hardware is objectively obsolete. Is it based on a 486, or a Pentium I/II/III?
>>
>>3862078
nah voodoo3 are great cards, you even got the pci version.
>>
>>3862090
I thought AGP was supposed to be better than PCI. More throughput or something.
>>
>>3862102
main benefit of pci is that you can use it in systems that lack agp slot
>>
>>3862078
I see a Riva TNT2 in there as well
>>
You should just give me that pci voodoo3
>>
>>3862121
Well as you can see I have two of them.
If they're worth something maybe I should try to sell one of them. Has the retro bubble hit PC parts yet? I see ridiculous prices for some of this stuff on ebay, but that doesn't mean they are actually selling...
>>
>>3862078
You're sitting on a gold mine with the 3Dfx cards alone. At least $100 worth.
>>
>>3862141
The bubble has hit hard. Thank LGR.
>>
>>3862142
>>3862145
Damn, maybe I should start pulling parts out of the towers I have lying around too and see if they are worth anything.

The only thing valuable are the Voodoo 5 models that never made it to market, and even then you have to find the right buyer.
>>
>>3862243
Yeah I saw some of those on ebay going for hundreds of dollars when I looked.
But I also saw a voodoo3 card new in box for ten thousand dollars. I'm having trouble believing that anyone is actually going to buy that though.

I understand people buying like, one of a kind SNES games for tens of thousands of dollars because they are well known and highly sought after, making them a "status" item for collectors (of which there are obviously many). But I don't think there are nearly as many collectors of old PC hardware as there are of vintage nintendo games.
>>
>>3862243
there is a ton of hardware collectors will pay premium for; Roland gear, canopus grapics cards, Quantum3d 3dfx, high end 486 stuff, Nx586 and more
>>
>>3862243
I'm glad I was able to get my voodoo 5 for cheap way back, too bad it died.
>>
tfw I literally threw loads of this shit in a dumpster years ago when I moved because I had no room. It was considered worthless junk then.

the regret

>The bubble has hit hard
Has it really? Holy shit. Give examples
>>
>>3862489
For starters, anything made by 3Dfx, but especially Voodoo5s and Voodoo2 SLIs are now regularly selling for triple digits.

Also Roland sound cards and synths, MIDI daughterboards, early Sound Blaster cards (pre-SB16), Asus motherboards, Super Socket 7 motherboards, and CPUs with high gold content (PPro, 6x86)

And basically anything older than Socket 7 is entering that territory as well. LGR made a video of building a 486 PC last year and since then prices have increased about 50%.

Some things are still worthless, like S3 and Trident cards, due to their sheer volume produced and used in OEMs.

It's worth about $50 - too rich for my blood and I'm sick of looking in every thrift store PC trying to find one.

The AGP 2.0 Driver for win98 was a mega pain in the ass for me to get working. Lots of safe-mode restart uninstall restart install restart until I figured out what I needed to get it to work.

Anyone have any idea what this weird port is for? It's not a parallel port. It's male as opposed to female and there's a normal parallel port on the bank with all the other ports anyway.

On the other side, it breaks out into three cables that disappear inside the case. I'll post a picture of that from another angle in a minute.

This is a late 90s Pentium II PC made by Tangent Computer.

Here's what the cables coming out of the back of that connector look like. They disappeare under the chassis that holds the drives and then can be seen entering a hole near the front of the case.

And then here's where what looks like the same three cables go into the front part of the case.

Could it have something to do with that set of USB and audio ports? How would that even work?
The power button and LEDs are also near that part of the case, but I can see a smaller bundle of wires going to the motherboard that probably feeds those.

Sorry about the ugly pictures, I'm taking them with my phone and it's hard to get a good angle on stuff inside the case.

My shot in the dark would be that it's so a UPS or network management hardware could remotely shut down and restart the computer
>>
>>3863962
What's on the front panel? If nothing special it's probably some sort of RPB.
>>
>>3864253
Nothing, just a power button, reset button (I guess?), processor light, and power light. There's not like an LCD screen or anything.

What's an RPB?
>>
>>3864393
Remote Power Boot. It allows you to power on/off and reboot a machine remotely.

probably a front panel pass-through cable to connect the front audio/usb ports. you're missing a cable that goes between the internal cable and the motherboard back ports though

I have a 5.25" panel that uses a similar solution. male/female orientation doesn't matter, it's still some non-standard pinout anyway.

also resize your shit
>>
>>3865535
Aha, I think the cable in your pic is exactly what I'm missing. That explains why the front panel ports don't work, anyway.
If there were any documentation about it I guess I could fashion a replacement by cannibalizing some other cables.

Sorry about the huge pictures, my phone can only take pics in stupid resolutions for some reason.
