I used to mess around with Pokemon Yellow glitches. Seeing how far I could get in the Glitch Cities, battling "Alien Blaine" and his deadly glitch Nidorino, fucking up my cousin's Hall of Fame records because he had Red and Missingno crashes your game on Yellow (sorry man).

I once entered a cheat to turn my Zapdos into "Venutoise", one of the "PokeGods". It became a glitchy monstrosity with a Pokedex number in the 160s, until it leveled up and inexplicably turned into a Rhydon.

The knowledge that all this was lurking under the surface of a cheerful little game and the distorted audio that accompanied some glitches made it creepy as hell for me. Still does.

Is System Shock 2 retro? My girlfriend would sit with me while I play, and she was creeped out by the cybermothers. "I need meat for my little ones." and if she heard the monkey sounds, which usually meant I was going to get blindsided by cryoblasts, she'd get all jumpy.

The forest temple in OoT, the music and theme of house in the middle of the forest guarded by malicious spirits

Call me an /x/ fag all you want but you can go in and get killed by some shit, I'll stay safe in the light 3 miles away awake for the next three days paranoid as shit.

This a million times. Always bothered me but I can't figure out why. Maybe the impending opening of bowers cave the first time. Or the fact no boss. But definitely the victory music ha 's so thing to do with it. I'm surprised anyone else on this planet had this feel.

Then again I'm a huge pussy and when I was a toddler even the McNeil lehrer theme terrified me.
>>
>>3854669
>inexplicably turned into a Rhydon.
The numbers of Pokemon in the data are not the numeric Pokedex. Rhydon is the first Pokemon created and in the game data; if the Pokemon data fucks up (like yours did) then it defaults to the first spot during evolution as an error handler
>>
>>
>>3856653
Forest Temple is worse than Shadow for me.
Shadow was deliberately made to be creepy, you know since the first visit in the Cemetery that this will be pretty dark.
Forest in the other hand is a huge and unexpected change of tone, and doesn't need scythes and bones everywhere to give you the creeps. That eerie and whimsical feel is just superior in every way than just torture devices and undead.

Also EH REH.

There was something about Digger T. Rock as a whole that freaked me out as a kid. A combination of descending into a dark narrow cave, having to find the exit before its door shut forever, the constant danger of falling to your death (not just into a pit), and meeting fucking dinosaurs to top it off just did it for me. It didn't help that the game is tough.

Fun game though. I don't see it ever talked about.

SMW was the next core Mario game released after SMB3. The crashed ship in SMW is one of the SMB3 koopaling airships, and that green orb is one of the orbs dropped by Boom Booms.

The sunken ship is creepy because you've been there before, and you're the reason why all of those ghosts are stuck haunting it.

Entire game of original dos Prince of Persia. I just loved the atmosphere of this game. It was so simple looking but it really had this amazingly dark and enchanted feel to it. Also it was gory yet it didn't have to be. And the little one time events that happened in the game were so good, like the bottle that made u hover down, the time u jump through a mirror and make your evil twin, that one fat guard, etc. Really beautiful game. Also u were on a time limit the whole time so you never felt relaxed and always felt like u needed to rush.

I found it way creepier when you sank down under it to get the 1Up and the spikes come falling down, wedging you in between a bottomless pit and imminent death from above.

In retrospect, almost any underwater level ever in any game is 10% more eerie than normal levels, probably because of being immobilized with your movement.

I also found pic related in SMB3 creepy for some reason, especially because nothing is happening in this room, even the ghost are dead

>>
>>3878559
It's probably unique to me.
I'm scared of birds. I'm really creeped out by beaks. I'm also scared of big dead eyes. I'm scared of wide empty mouths. Scared of big heavy monsters. Scared of being eaten whole by a monster. As a kid he was a personification of my fears. I had to close my eyes or give the controller to my sister and leave the room when Dedede parts came up, because I got so scared. My friend bought a Kirby and Dedede plush doll from the anime (when the anime was blowing up on Fox Kids) and gave them to me for my birthday, since he knew I liked Kirby, I loved seeing Kirby but when I unwrapped Dedede I had a panic attack. I started sobbing and ran away from it, I ran away from home, got lost, and wandered around for several hours, until a policeman found me. For some reason I like him in 64 though, he's not scary in that one. Maybe it's the graphics. But even after 64, if I went back to Super Star or Dream Land to face him there, it's the same soul chilling terror and anxiety.
Not REALLY scared of him anymore, but he still gives me a really, really uneasy feeling.

>if you play a Nintendo game, you MUST be a Nintendo fanboy!

Some people just like playing video games, regardless of brand fanatism.

Also, I'm not sure what OP intended to say, but I think "creepy" isn't the same as "scary", or doesn't mean that it's something that actually scared you, just something that felt weird, unsettling.

Otherwise if the thread was about "scary" moments we'd be limited to stuff like survival horror games but that'd be too predictable.

The demonic clown is Marx from Kirby Super Star. In the DS remake he splits in half and screams when you kill him.

Beneath him is the Black Knight from one of the Fire Emblems. He's not scary out of context. What is scary is a single guy strong enough to kill half your army in a game where death is permanent.

The blue dinosaur thing is Tubba Blubba from Paper Mario. He removes his own heart to become immortal, and he terrorizes a literal ghost town to feed on the Boo population.

The white thing holding a rock is the Waterwraith from Pikmin 2. Basically a scary invincible ghost that chases you down and crushes your Pikmin.

The Pokemon one is mostly the tower, but the thing in the TV is Rotom from Gen IV. The floating ghost girl I believe is somebody implied to have been killed by Darkrai in Gen V? I may be wrong.

The eyeball is Zero from Kirby's Dreamland 3. He's actually his eye and the rest of him is a shell. He rips himself out of his own body to chase after you at the end.

The green ghost thing is the Progg from Pikmin. Basically a living toxic cloud that guns straight for your base to fatally poison all of your Pikmin.

The whole R-Type series, as there is more than just about the whole organic technology killing the humans.

Or mostly about aliens using organic technology to run their weapons of mass destruction. Beating heart as a reactor, large eyes as security cameras, brains for CPU and such, who got the idea of using flesh and meat as a destructive tech anyway?

As a kid, the idea of using flesh as weapon scares the shit out of me as I hate gore in general. Perhaps as a kid, an idea formed to me as those aliens are perhaps abducting humans and they are using their flesh and organs to form weapons.

Now, I can tolerate it at least but it still disturbs me somehow.
Man, typing these make me imagine the horrors again.

speaking of irem shooters, x multiply is one of the creepiest shmups I've played, but I think besides the whole body horror the game has (which I still think was not exploited to the max, but the theme was pretty cool), the most eerie thing in the game was the title screen.
Just that face, who probably is the body host's.

>>3889378
Jesus, Irem. They create great shooters but I still cannot fathom the idea why they use horrific theme such as body horror. Image Fight is the only one I remember that doesn't have the body horror as the theme.

And yes, the thumb nail is enough to creep me out at 4am. Thank you.

this whole level scared the hell out of me as a kid but the worst part was definitely when you had to grab the invincibility that ran on a timer and swim quickly through the underground rivers of acid. It feels pretty straightforward now but as a kid i would always get disoriented, worry about the powerup running out as i was still in the acid so i'd always panic and swim back out the way i came.
plus the whole 'ghost ships' thing, especially them being in the middle of a floating island of desert w/ little acid rivers but no water or explanations for why they were there.... definitely 2spoopy

Samurai Shodown with some fight stick
Novastorm (beats any other version, I checked)

I got a Playstation not too long after so I don't really have much to praise about 3DO objectively speaking. Picture shows what I managed to preserve, not sure where the rest went. I just might say Novastorm is my favorite but it's probably because of Psygnosis' style over substance.

Link's Awakening lives on through Malon, and Talon in Ocarina of Time who were heavily inspired by Marin and Tarin. In Twilight Princess it was even implied that Link got together with Malon.

The same for the owl who appeared in LA and the OoT owl. It went on to be a huge part of lore, because Zelda's father was Rauru/the owl's ancestor. Skyward Sword also had a possible ancestor to the Wind Fish.

There's also a great homage to Link's Awakening in Breath of the Wild with a shipwreck quest on an island named after places from Link's Awakening, and a village named after Mabe village.

Wind Waker has an item that lets you possess a seagull which I always felt was an homage to the secret ending of Link's Awakening. And the shrine music is the cave music from LA.

That's not even mentioning all the gameplay shit that was carried over from LA.

The whole game is unsettling to me after I learned the origin story.

It's on Larry Bundy Jr's channel but tl;dr NASA payed dolphin scientists to try to communicate with aliens, the guy in charge went schizophrenic and thought the Earth Coincidence Control Office (hence the title) were spying on him or some shit.

Oh and some lady jerked off Ecco because he was horny and he had ot be seperated from females. He actually even started to prefer only her jerking him.

Jerking dophins on government money because ayylmaos and scitzophrenia and LSD. That's what the fucking game is about.

That is actually how I interpreted the ending, as a kid. I was amazed by it and I loved it. I guess I just didn't understand what was really supposed to be happening. I was pretty young.

Illusion of Gaia has some creepy stuff, like when the one kid disappears and later becomes part of the sea creature that took him away, or something like that (it's been a while)... or when you and the one girl almost die on the raft... or... well I think there were a few others. The last bit with Gem the Jeweler is fairly creepy, if you do everything right.

Also Secret of Evermore was kinda creepy and surreal. Especially in the medieval area, and especially in the part where you find the king in that area, and optionally watch the "Show of Life" that has hypnotized him. That show is really out of place and seemed very strange to me as a kid.

Also some of the side areas and hidden endings in E.V.O., as long as I'm thinking about oddball SNES RPG-ish games. There was definitely some creepiness there. Frickin birdmen and even weirder things, trying to interfere with earthly evolution... and it was all completely missable by the player.

Duke Nukem 64.

You now how sometimes when games are ported, you have to cut some corners to get it onto the disc or cartridge?
DN64's most notable cut was the music. The only music in the game was the rendition of Grabbag (which I think sounded better than the PC's midi version). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isjbaebcOQU

So outside of sound effects like Duke's ship crashing at the start, and a distant scream on some levels, it was silent. Just Duke, his weapons and the aliens. It made every unseen encounter into a jumpscare.

The opening to Super Metroid unnerved me when I first rented it, but it was also cool enough that after playing a bit I had to buy it.

Now for something that got me, that Granfaloon or Legion or whatever that spherical multi-humulculous body thing was in Castlevania Symphony of the Night. That generally unnerved the hell out of me the first time I fought it.
>>

It's just supposed to be a parody of "postmodernism" which made more sense in 1993 (when the game came out) than it does today.

this was the only version of Duke I knew about when I was really little, and you're right about the lack of music being unsettling

Salamander/Life Force randomly creeps me out. Sometimes it's just cool and weird, then theres the blood-drenched teeth trying to gnash you and times in which you are shooting through regenerating netting that resembles brain synapses. Don't think too hard about what you are doing to the creature you are destroying from the inside out. It gets disturbing.
>>
>>3899819
>>3900520
The knife, man. I always dreaded any scenario involving the knife.
>>
>>3905020
Not the first creep-out thing I'd imagine from that game, but it's a start.

On that note, Mutant Jennifer from the first game. Especially that fucking laugh...
>>
>>3907015
The different versions of Salamander each have different settings.

The original arcade game simply takes place in space. The biological areas are planets that the Bacterians have taken over and "infected", turning their surface into living organic tissue.

When the arcade game was re-released as Life Force, the story was changed to a "Fantastic Voyage" scenario, where you are traveling through a human infected with an alien disease.

Finally, in the NES version, the setting is inside a gigantic monster that travels through space eating planets, which is why there are things like volcanos and ancient ruins inside its body.

Call me a pussy all you want,
but the scene in WA1 where Zeikfried ends up in the sunken photsophere with the blob that had been mother did cost me a few nights of sleep. Anything vore creeps me the fuck out and then THIS shit came out of nowhere. The fucking blob with mother's face. Twitching and jiggling and glowing. Then she launches herself at Zeikfried and you see the disgusting underpart of the blow. Zeikfried formerly so strong and heroic and unafraid trying to crawl away in panic as he realizes what's about to happen to him.

And then the fucking crunchy slurpy sounds as mother monologues how she and her son had become one again.
