Like dude said, this is a thread about games you wish were translated not how to read Japanese.

Not all of us murricans have time to take on a second language in between giant bites of burger.
>>
>>3851798
This type of visual mnemonic learning is absolute cancer and if internalized (neural pathways laid down and reinforced) will permanently damage your language aquisition preventing you from ever reaching native fluency.

When you see the number 3 do you look at it and find three horizontal lines and let that give you its meaning? No, it's an abstraction that immediately points your mind to a concept without any intermediate steps. That's how Japanese perceive their written script and how you should install them into your brain.

It's just like mathematics. If the basic foundational building blocks are imprinted wrongly (as ZOG's Common Core curriculum is designed to do), maths will always be slow and tiresome for you.

Avoid this mnemonic garbage at all costs if you really want to read Japanese without assistance.
The verbal version of this (ichy, knee, sun, yawn) is also a threat to your learning.

Medarot series, comfy as fuck Pokémon-like RPGs that gave birth to the anime known as Medabots in the west. It's a long series, the last game released was the non-retro Medarot 9 on 3DS, but I want to play at least the Game Boy games.

The SNES SaGa games.

Purumui Purumui, cute Playstation RPG done by the Digimon World series (sans the first) developers. Seem to run on the Digimon World 2 or 3 engine.
>>
>>3852032
autistic much? If it helps you memorize something faster whats the problem? I mean kanji is basically a form or pictographs ment to represent the characters meaning. Im just familiarizing myself with the character so I can then understand words and memorize the words. I used mnemonics/flashcards for math as well and it does help memorize boring tedious shit. SOH CAH TOA saved my ass many times.

>>
I don't understand the point of threads like this. Are you hoping someone will see it and decide to pick those games up? If so, you'll be waiting for a long time - certainly much longer than the year or two it takes to become competent enough at Japanese to play any game you want.
>>
>>3851923
Because it's obscenely difficult, I would know because I took some classes.

It's actually easier to read than speak if. Kanji is overblown and once you know what one means it usually sticks but the grammar is jank and the words are really long.

Maybe Soros could put some of his riot money towards promoting Esperanto, his name is in the language after all.
>>
>>3852132
>a year or two
LOL, more like a decade.
>>
>>3852132
I'm a translator. I lurk these threads to see what people are interested in and play games I haven't looked into that other people think could be fun. I probably won't translate 1 in 1000 of the games that people list or talk about, but that's still more than nothing.

I doubt I'm the only one who does this.
>>
>>3852132
i treat them as semi-obscure game threads. there are usually one or two that i didn't know about that look interesting.

For the Lodoss War games, the Windows ports are the best versions as they contain extra story and proper continuity with the books, as well as higher quality artwork.

The only problem is visible in the screenshot I posted. That terrible windows theme. Each of the in-game windows use the base Windows theme. It looks pretty terrible when previous versions had their own window border theme going.

What's the point? Lodoss never had a fixed continuity with replay, novel, manga and anime all featuring their own take on the events and characters
The original computer games were crucial in shaping the world and the pen and paper releases.

Studying a language is a complex thing. You only invest in it if you find it useful.

the thing is there's a factual difference between playing games in a language you are able to read and understand in a "passive" way, and games that you "have to" focus on translating instead of playing.
What I want experience is the first option. that needs a translation.
What the second option need is learning well the language, and I don't want to because I don't find jap useful for my life.
What you suggest (not learning well the idiom and play the game focusing on the idiom) is shittier for me that don't playing the game at all.

>Some people said you don't need the text to play this

Fuck you I'm currently going crazy with the locked doors and shit. The game's pretty fun though.
>>
>>3863015

It's a mixture of both. Sometimes playable drafts help just in chiseling out stuff I need to look for and finally see how stuff is used. Sometimes text takes a long time to find/dump/reinsert/fix any major bugs. It's a lot of back and forth.

I'm also trying to delve a bit into editing PSP graphics to help push things along, but even those can be tedious to extract/reinsert.

Sometimes when I finish a main storyline or a full draft of a script after several weeks of nothing bit, I just want to look at literally anything except for that game or script for a while, so I either go back to an older project and start tinkering with that, or I look at a new project.

It's not as efficient, but I wouldn't be nearly as productive if I just burned out in 1 project and never finished. I myself just don't work that way.
>>
>>3863072
Do you play games or is the danger too big that you'd start translating them as well?
>>
>>3863082
I play a lot less for simple, stress-free leisure, but translating has given me a much bigger appreciation for well-done English translations.

I was interested in helping someone doing Atelier Ellie+Marie on Ps2. No one was biting at the time and I love Koihime Ohse's art. While I couldn't make any promises, I went and picked up the Arland and Dusk series (Ayesha Plus was out for maybe a couple months at the time), and I've played all of them and I'm even taking a Sophie break right now.

Another more capable translator(I think it was the guy who did the Ar Tonelico 2 retranslation) picked up the project in the meantime, but I do think I got something out of it.

That said, the Ui editing in Atelier games is a fucking mess.
>>
>>3863082

Oh, you meant playing JP games. Hmmm... Yeah, that's actually a super dangerous part of it. I dont replay a lot of games but will get the itch to play/translate something hardcore when it pops up on my music playlist.

I listen to a lot of game osts when I work because they don't have any words to get me mixed up when I'm trying to read and write.

It's mostly psx and dreamcast...other portable things. I have a ps2 game almost done even, but I don't have a tv anymore and my laptop doesn't have the power to run the disc, so until I can buy a cheapo tv to play, I haven't considered other ps2 games that I also like. Plus, ps2 games are super untouched upon in the romhacking com that there aren't a lot of resources in case skmething goes wrong.
>>
>>3863117
>ps2 games are super untouched upon in the romhacking com that there aren't a lot of resources in case skmething goes wrong.
What platforms are actually developed in that regard? SFC, FC, GB and MD?
>>
>>3863121
Snes/nes for sure. You see a lot of translations for those two in general. Gba and gb seem like they're in good hands as well.

Psp, ndd and psx tend to have healthier crowds too. Still, with those ones, you're going to run into some sort of anti-piracy gimmeck that may not make them the most beginner-friendly. Still, gbatemp has awesome resources for those curious about handheld romhacking specifically. Most handheld game translation patches stem from that forum.

Borderline nonexistent crowds include N64, Saturn, PC-Engine, Ps2+Gamecube, and I don't think I see a whole lot for Genesis? I never did check for any though.
>>
>>3863131
>Borderline nonexistent crowds
I've only seen a couple PS2 translations and most of them were never finished. I don't really know why, PS2 was the top selling console, you'd think more people would be interested in translation

Also I'd say PSP and NDS are way "easier" than gba, at least in my experience.
>>
>>3863165
They're definitely easier due to hiw accessable the file structure is. Very easy to extract and parse through file types. Gba doesn't have that luxury at all. It's also why I don't bother with snes games, and there's only one gba game I've found that ever just had all the game's text sitting out in the open in the hex editor.

Plus, gba has a really bad text limit dur to the screen size and all that. Really no room for customization and fucking with the vwf like in games on other systems.

If you get a chance, I greatly enjoyed Shadow Tower Abyss, and I do think the Ar Tonelico 2 retranslation is out now.
>>
>>3863131
The only ones from the borderline that actually has enough games worth translating are PC-Engine and Saturn. PS2 doesn't have that many JP games that require translation and Gamecube and N64 maybe have 1 both
>>
>>3863193
I think that's mostly a matter of taste. I think the PS2 has a lot of untapped games in its JP library. That said the Saturn suffered a legitimately crippled release and lifespan. Fortunately there are ports of a hot number of games initially released on it, but the exclusives could use some love.

Growlanser 1 for PS1.

There is an story script on GFs but i would like to play it in english on the console.

Langrisser 3&5. Same deal with Growlanser .

Sonata PS1. Its an RPG were your gf dissapears and you go on 3 diferent worlds (Fantasy, High School, Futuristic) and meet several girls, whoever you get in the end is the gf you lost (In the opening cinematic the gf is faceless and there is no one in the cast that resembles her so everyone can be her).

Sonata has a guide for fantasy and high school but not the futuristic scenario.

Mitsumete Knight and R. Its basically Tokimemo but in an european fantasy setting. Fun fact: you get to fight Rocket Knight and beating him unlocks the NG+ shop.

There is a DJT on both /int/ and /jp/, /int/ismore helpful if you don't really use /jp /much. Both DJT's have a a link in the op that takes you to the guide and also has a reccomendation list for Japanese stuff to read at any level.

Guy who beat Medarot 1-5 here. Great series.

Couldn't get into the non GB/C games but the first five games, especially 2-4 are all pretty fucking good.

Some of the Original Fire emblems would be nice.

I played the PSP version but couldn't bring myself to beat it. 20-ish hours in.

It's great but the combat can get repetetive once in a while. I like the characters but just don't care enough to keep going now that I hit an annoying wall.
>>
>>3867387
Well, its the first one after all, a little bit slow on times, unlike Growlanser 4.

I already finished Growlanser 1 in PS1, I wish it is easy to go for the other endings like 4 but 1 (and 5 as well) requires you to make a choice around 3/4 of the game, which is quite tedious.
>>
>>3866740
I meant the 2017 Remake.
The Windows Port is my favourite version for how it used the Saturn's voice acting with the PC-98 artstyle.

PSP version has an added route which more or less requires you to play the game from the first quarter, as far as I can tell. Like I said, I haven't actually beaten it.

It's hard to tell, some battles were a blast and some battles were just a bore. It's unique, I'll give you that. Also requires you to use your head sometimes since you can't just heal and attack when there's objectives like in this game.

>>3867397
If I tried playing now I probably won't remember anything anyway. Last time I played was a few months back.

Misha is the best.
>>

Like I said, around 20 hours in and it feels like I've got a long way. I'm after the part where the three nations enter war and right now I'm doing an escort quest through the forest, each screen you move is full of monsters and in the end there's a guy that summons the monsters using scent.

Now, I got really fucking pissed because I cleared like five screens of monsters and the entire last map but the fucker ran away when I was one hit away from killing him, and obviously the last save was before all this bullshit.

>Might reconsider if you are near the end?
I guess so. I hope I haven't deleted the game yet.

Sounds like you arent really that long into the game since that part its like disc 1 in the PS1 game.

If the mission is to kill the monster tamer then just cast lots of magic on him, if you build MC with decent magic stats he and Ruise should get on it (Bring Misha if you can as well).
>>

Whats your party setup when you fight him?

Hope Carmine is fast enough to catch up to that monster tamer. I usually cast quick to him and manually control him via move so that he would not waste too much time.

Are the games connected in any way story wise or could you just start anywhere?
>>
>>3866842
I played most of the games even though I can't understand Japanese. I got to the end of 1 (Perfect Edition, on the Wonder Swan), 2, 2 Parts Collection, 3 Parts Collection, 4 and 5 on GB, Navi, 2 Core(the only one who got an official translation) and G on GBA and R Parts Collection on Playstation. I'm almost at the end on Shingata (1 GBA remake) and at the half of R on Playstation.
My favourite one was 2, that's usually regarded as the best game on the series.

Well, it goes like this. First game is the Hikari game and it's stand-alone for the most part. Wonderswan version is the best version featuring high details sprites and portraits.

2-4 are the Ikki games, they're placed a few years after the first game but it's not like you have to play it to understand anything. It's just cooler because you know Hikari is a badass. It's not recommended to play any of these games out of order because of reoccuring characters and gameplay improvments that would make reverting harder. Medarot 2 actually got an updated remake on the GBA which is also the only Medarot RPG localized.

Medarot 5 is a sad story, devolopment cut early and they had to ship the game so despite having a lot of potential it's pretty incomplete and it feels like it. Still reccomended if you can.

>>3867483
Fun fact, but the localized version of G (Medarot AX) is pretty much a different game. They switched the entire cast and bots to fit the anime that was aired in the US so instead of Koishimaru and the other guys you get Ikki.
>>
>>3863237
>>3863223
>caring about any other language for a fan translation than English

That's because AX isn't a localized version of G. It's a different game on the same engine made for the western market, and it actually was released before G.
I hate it.
>>
>>3867635

You know, I once read here that a Brazilian guy made an English fan-translation for a Japanese game.

Few is an understatement.

For instance in the adult games side of things patreon has become an scam were devs miss deadlines all the time and updates are meagers ammount of content.

You can count with a finger how many of them are complete or at least a sizeable ammount of play time.

I'm actually playing 4 currently but not knowing japanese its taken sometime.

What I do is take a screen shot of the game text,
run it through an ocr program,
fix any mistakes,
google translate the japanese
and then mess around until it becomes understandable.

Honestly it's a half decent process. It means pausing everytime there is text for 1-5 minutes while I do all that but it allows me to play and to understand what is being said 99% of the time and really get into the game.

I agree. there are no easy shortcuts, you just have to study. the kana aren't even that difficult -- you can get familiar in 1-2 weeks. it'll take longer to master them and read quickly, but that's part of the process.

common core is also cancer for the same reason, as you pointed out. fortunately it's headed for the dustbin of history, but I don't want to get off-topic.

Not true. It might take a decade before you stop sounding like an obvious foreigner in conversations, but you can easily reach a point where you're able to read any /vr/ game in 2 years, with the possible exception of visual novels that have a lot of niche (e.g. scientific or historical) vocabulary in them.
>>

some of the scenes that were remade as 3D animation i preferred as in-engine cutscenes with sprites, and the new soundtrack is significantly different from the original. fortunately meguro immediately realized his mistake and didn't change nearly as much in the persona 2 ports.

not even close. speaking is 100% easier, just like with chinese. All the words are simple and there aren't many different sounds.
>>
>>3854596
you have to be pretty intelligent to learn 2000 kanji in 3 months. the average person learns about 500 kanji in 6 months- a year
>>
Not exactly retro, but digimon has a lot of untranslated games
>>
>>3882561
Not really, it just depends on what you mean by "learn". Most people finish Remembering the Kanji and other similar methods, which amount to about 2000 kanji, in 2-3 months.
>>
>>3882503
There's a big difference to Chinese.
Having only a few syllables makes things quite complicated since you have to deal with tons of homophones that can't even be cleared up from context.
It's one of the reasons kana-only games are a plague.

You should compare the difficulty of reading/listening and speaking/writing. Being able to compose complex sentences on your own is certainly challenging than understanding such sentences.
If you can speak it you can write it for most part since Japanese text input is done via phonetics with either Latin or Kana input. Hand writing is irrelevant nowadays.
