Does this game even deserve it's spot as one of the all time greats?
I'm honestly more freaked out by fun playing the original
>>
it's a good entry level rail shooter. It does not stand close to games like Rez and Panzer Dragoon.
>>
Never heard of it, let alone viewed it as one of the all time greats. Looks like some Lylat Wars ripoff.
>>
Absolutely it does.

However, I have a few complaints

1. Charged shots don't feel very good in the long run. I'd rather have the immediacy of Space harrier or something.
2. Aquas is soooooo slllooooowwwwww
3. Your team-mate's kills don't count as your own most of the time. (Lookin' at you Sector Z)

Besides those, it's a fuckin' masterpiece.
>>
>>3845216
is it just me or does it look like the game runs at a slower framerate on aquas too? It's slow and there's a notably worse framerate.
>>
>>3845219
I think they did that on purpose.

Because it's the same shit in the 3ds remake.
>>
>>3845223
all the more reason why panzer dragoon and zwei are far better
>>
Sin and Punishment > Zwei > SF64 > PD1
>>
>>3845228
I wouldn't say they're "better".

These games have their own strengths and weaknesses. I definitely like the homing shot system in Panzer dragoon much more than the single ball charged shot in star fox 64. It feels better and looks cooler. However I also appreciate the whole boost system and barrel rolling in star fox 64 more than Panzer's rotating view. And both have such different atmospheres that are both very good. I wouldn't prefer one over the other.
>>
Unironically my favorite game of all time.
>>
It was never one of the all time greats but god damn it was/still is one hell of a fun game.

Calm your 'tism, it's just vidya bro.

Let's not get as cancerous as the shmupfags. Rail shootan bros are supposed to be a lot more chill.
>>
>>3845206
Not really. It's more famous for its memes. The original on SNES is much better. It has a much, MUCH better soundtrack, nothing is cheesy, and it's more challenging.

But seriously though, the soundtrack is a fucking masterpiece.

>8-10fps game where the slowdown actually affects control
>much better
No.
>>
>>3845206
excellent game
>>
>>3845667
No way. Cheesy is fun, and SF64 is smooth as butter. The original is still nice and all, but it's just too slow in comparison. IMO once you play 64 it's hard to go back.
>>
It may not be an all time great, but it's memorable as hell. The cutscenes and the way your characters interact are great. It's like a Disneyland dark ride, where you don't have or want much control.

I played it a fair amount as a kid, but I just recently medalled every level on regards and expert. Except that replaying levels you've already done is a pain it was a lot of fun and a pretty stiff challenge.
>>
>>3846391
>The original is still nice and all, but it's just too slow in comparison. IMO once you play 64 it's hard to go back.
No anon, it is YOU that needs to slow down.

I played both all the time growing up and I never had a problem "transitioning" between the two. Other than the fact that they're both 3D aerial shooters, they're pretty different games.

Doesn't it, though, anon? Doesn't it?
>>
>>3847784
I'll explain, Lylat Wars was the European name of Starfox 64
>>
>>3846391

It's obviously not what the devs intended but overclocked Star Fox is fun (and fast) as fuck, though I see what you mean about the vanilla version. Star Fox 2 I would legit put over 64, it's so fucking good.
>>
>>3845667
star fox 64 is better in literally every single way one thing can be better than another. what is with these horrible hipster threads recently where we pretend good games aren't good? i bet you think zelda 2 is the best one also because you are a contrarian homo with a weird voice and no friends
>>
>>3845207
Rail Shooter? It's a 3D shoot'em up.
>>
>>3847845
let's not get hanged up on terminology now

I know, anon! I'm not dumb or anything. It's clearly a joke, nothing meant for ill intent.
>>
>>3845206
It's too easy and charged shots were arguably a mistake.

If there was a hard mode equal to the original and charged shots were never introduced it'd be the perfect Star Fox game.

Overall it's still an excellent game that deserves its status as one of the best N64 games.
>>
>>3845282
S&P is one of the best series ever.

>Rail Shooter.

It is clearly a belt shooter.
>>
>>3847893
I will gut you like a trout.
>>
>>3845206

I think it's pretty damn solid, but it's so fucking easy that you can smell the stench of Nintendo's casualization a mile away.

It's basically an arcade game but not really.
>>

>rail shooter
By definition, rail shooters can't allow movement of your character around the screen (unless you're moving around on a vehicle you can't control). They're called "rail shooters" because they're like those tracked carnival rides. That means that the genre is pretty much limited to lightgun games or those where you only move a targeting reticle.

>>3847845 has it right. Another name for 3D shooter would be "Cabal shooter", after the arcade game of the same name (although such recognition is odd, because it wasn't the first game with such mechanics).
>>
So, what did you guys think of Assault?

Thought it was pretty good, although the on foot missions needed some polish.
>>
>>3848479
You're right actually, but at this point most people, at least in the west, call them on-rail shooters, and games like Time Crisis or Virtua Cop are called lightgun games.

And still, all these games have different features.

Star Fox lets you move around, but has the all-range mode for some stages and boss fights which changes the concept of "on-rails" completely. Star Fox 2 also has the free-roaming 3D parts with the bipedal arwing, and SF64 has the tank part, which I guess the boss on that stage can be considered "cabal-like".
Star Fox also has a lot of maneuvering like the somersault, u-turn, etc.

Panzer Dragoon (and Rez) are completely on-rails except for parts when you stop, giving it the cabal element. It doesn't have any free-roaming or range mode, and you can't really do any fancy maneuvering with the dragon, but you can rotate the camera in 4 directions.

Sin and Punishment is also 100% on rails except for some parts that are also cabal-like, S&P is the most cabal-like of the three, and has dodging, jumping and even melee attacks/deflection. On the later levels it completely changes the perspective and it turns into a side-scrolling shooting game like Contra, while still being on-rails. It's the most experimental of the bunch for sure, despite not having branching paths like the other two.

They're all "3D shooters", but they're also different from each other in many ways.

why is sf64 ost so shitty

Zoness is really good
>>
>>3851708
lol no
>>
>>3851712
Fuck. I'm butttriggered now
>>
>>3851685
I prefer it to the SNES soundtrack.

>>3851708
This. I also really like the warp zone music.
>>
>>3845206
I really like it. If you're not into other shmups and other arcadey games you won't like this one.
>>
>>3847870

I do a challenge run like that, no health power ups and no barrel rolls either. It's a lot of fun, makes it a challenge.
>>
>>3845216
am i the only one to actually like Aquas?
>>
>>3854870
Probably.

Also yes star fox 64 is in my top 10.

S&P2>sf64>S&P>SF>PD Orta> Galaxy Force 2> Rez
>>
How complete is the Star Fox 2 Beta ROM?
Can it be played through to the end?

What did he mean by this?
>>
>>3856432
Games that are similar in gameplay, length or amount of focus on replaying for a higher scores to a traditional arcade game, I'd imagine.
>>
>>3845206
excellent
>>
>>3845210
Lel,
You're a pretty cool Anon.
>>
>>3856432
You'd understand if you played more games anon.

They're games you can sit down, pick up, and play with not a lot of rules to them. Something you could totally see being in an arcade.
