Yes you will. Its a 'what if' version of mgs1, you could read up on mg1/mg2 if you wished.

This is the pinnacle of retro game design. They pulled every drop of processing from the GBC to make this.

You won't be too lost but I'd recommend playing metal gear 1 and 2 (especially 2 since it's really good) beforehand.

You'll understand a few things better, like how Campbell and Snake know each other, but there's nothing you'll be confused by. The PS1 version is mostly self-contained, too, but you will have to play it to understand 2, 4 and 5.
