So I've been thinking about RE2. What do you actually do in the game and what is the goal of the characters?

See, they first are overwelmed by zombies and then seek shelter in the police station right? But then what do they do? They try to find a way out of the city. Isn't it just kinda bullshit luck that the police station just so happens to lead to the sewer system, that leads to a scrap yard, that just so happens to have an elevator and train system to a lab, which has another train system that leads out of the city? Why would there be rationally ANY path out of the city from the police station? It's just dumb luck.

Secondly, Umbrella factory is the entrance to the labs right? It's not some place hidden in some valley somewhere. It's literally right beside the police station. There's some wrecked cars and shit, but it'd be quicker to just walk there instead of going via police station and then sewers.

But RE is not Castlevania or Mega Man. It has quite a bit more realistic setting and approach. Saving bullets, headshots, medicine, etc. It's weird when a realistic game does that.
>>
>>3837626

You go most of the game just trying to find survivors from Bravo Team and trying to solve the mystery scooby doo style. It's actually not until you look out the window in one room that you see the helipad and then a possible escape route.
>>
>>3837576
all of that could be the fault of goofy 90s horror writing

but why the fuck does the person in the B scenario have to unlock all the doors that A character unlocked? that shit don't make sense

and RE1 still doesn't make sense because neither route is canon since barry AND rebecca survive

at least RE3 was solid and made sense
>>
>>3837654
>and RE1 still doesn't make sense because neither route is canon since barry AND rebecca survive

Both are canon at the same time. Remake really should have made an A and B scenario like RE2.

>but why the fuck does the person in the B scenario have to unlock all the doors that A character unlocked? that shit don't make sense

Just a gameplay thing. Also, your characters would constantly be bumping into each other, and they would be clearing monsters for you.
>>
>>3837576
The front entrance is crowded with zombies, so they're trying to see if they can find another exit through the police station which is less crowded with monsters. Meanwhile, they also claim to be looking for survivors, and what better place to find some than the police station. Plus, looking around the police station may also help you find ammo and guns.

It's not 'luck' that the police station is connected to the umbrella labs through tunnels, however it is luck that they figure it out, but the same thing could be said about so many other stories, and not just horror ones. Yes, the protag will unfold the mysteries, and sometimes they get help from luck.

>Secondly, Umbrella factory is the entrance to the labs right? It's not some place hidden in some valley somewhere. It's literally right beside the police station. There's some wrecked cars and shit, but it'd be quicker to just walk there instead of going via police station and then sewers.

The whole point of going to the police station is because the streets are crowded with zombies, so they're not going back there. Did you not pay attention to the intro and first 10 mins of the game? Also, during B scenarios, if you try to escape through one of the door you took to enter the police station, you won't be able to and you'll only let more zombies in the police station. Pay attention!

Only Jill in RE3 is badass enough to walk over the streets and even then how many times have we all died in RE3?
>>
>>3837576
First, it wasn't luck, Umbrella was working with the police department and owned the sewer system. All of the Umbrella facilities in the area were linked up via the sewers, there is even a route from the training facilities in the woods to the lab, as seen in RE0,

Second, even if it didn't all link up, then they would have just come up with a new plan, and the game would have been about that instead, like RE3.

Third, of course the labs had a main entrance, but when you are doing shady shit, you cant just move bioweapons out the front door.
>>
Imagine how threatening a zombie would be if you couldn't strafe.

Why didn't Chris just pilot the Bravo team helicopter? He was a former Airforce aviator after all.
>>
>>3837654
And why do they even keep splitting up? And how come they never bump into each other (well apart from one or two times)? Lmao
>>
>>3837752
bravo team helicopter had an engine malfunction and was crash-landed

also probably only ever flew jets anyway

in fact, the only currently living people in the entire series who have piloted a helicopter are leon, josh, ada, and barry

chris probably wanted to avoid the fate of the capcom helicopter pilot
>>
>>3837717
>First, it wasn't luck, Umbrella was working with the police department and owned the sewer system.

But the characters do NOT know this. For them, the Police station is just a random building.
>>
>>3837576
they went by survival horror logic

"shit this place is crazy, I must go deeper"

then they accidentally themselves into an umbrella lab

what's even sillier is that some people and an amnesiac ex-scientist accidentally found one of the lab's entrances via the subway, and the waste processing plant was straight up just another lab

umbrella was not a smart company
>>
>>3837690
>It's not 'luck' that the police station is connected to the umbrella labs through tunnels,

From the character's perspective it is. It's incredibly convenient.
>>
>>3837759
>And why do they even keep splitting up?

This bugged me IMMENSELY in RE1. Sure, Barry has a big Magnum (which RE games treat as powerful as a hunting rifle), but Rebecca is just some kid armed with only a 9mm handgun. Yet Chris just allows her to run around and do anything she wants to.
>>
>>3837576
>what is the goal of the characters?
Survival. If you were crashed in downtown Raccoon City would you NOT go to the police station? The only other option would be to get a vehicle and take flight but that would be a very different type of game that I would probably play
>>
>>3838427
not retro but boy would that made a fun arma 2/3 mod
>>
>>3838427
Surely Leon's vehicle is still intact, they should have gotten there instead of the police station
>>
>>3837576
I always found it stupid how he manged to drive right into the middle of the city with zero problems only for there to be zombies, wrecked cars and fires everywhere moments later
>>
>>3839798

You mean his original vehicle? They were driving for a long time before the crash. Probably on the other side of town. Looks like they were actually just planning on driving out before the crash.

Also interesting thought: if they had just driven out, what would have happened to the rest of the cast? Sherry would have been fucked. Ada would have chased after her and gotten the sample. Doubt Ada would have any mommy instincts like Claire and try to protect her. Instead just grab the locket and escape.
>>
>>3837576
Yes, Umbrella runs the whole of Racoon City. They're part of everything.
>>
>>3839820

The wrecked cars/fires are because of the massive crash and explosion that just happened. Or did you completely skip the intro cutscene? The cars weren't originally wrecked or on fire. They were just parked.

"Story in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important."

>>
>>3840963

This right here. RE2 is a good survival horror adventure game and good horror experience but trying to suss out the canon of RE and justify the meta-narrative of the series is fucking retarded. The RE character personalities and lore is the lowest of the low.
>>
You can say this about any game desu. Isn't it convenient that that chasm that's far to large for Mario to jump across just happens to have a floating platform on it? Almost like it was designed that way.

But the way I like to think of it is like this. It's a city, there's lots of people trying to get out, most won't have a path out but statistically speaking a couple of people will get lucky. You're playing as one of those lucky ones cus a game where you get trapped after 10 minutes and have no way to continue wouldn't be fun.

Things like this happen ALL the time in games. Why pick on RE2 in particular?
>>
>>3837840
It's not a massive leap of logic though, you'd have to be violating a hell of a lot of laws to let a bioweapon like the T-virus loose in a populated city, having the chief of police on the payroll makes sense.

You shouldn't try to apply IRL rules to layouts made for gameplay purposes, because if you'd think that way you'd quickly realize that the only elevator for the floors we access is in the doctors office.

Besides IIRC in Outbreak there is a scenario in the hopsital and it's much bigger. It may even be a different one I don't remember.
>>
RE3 is very disappointing in how it makes Raccoon City come off as a couple of hallways

Resident Evil Outbreak fleshed out the look pretty well.
>>
>>3846304
So don't set RE3 in a fake feeling city

Anyone remember this? Like why'd they randomly insert a picture of Alex Mack here?

It's clear Japanese games would steal assets/insert copyright infringing references whenever they could get away with it.

the hospital in outbreak was actually pretty true to the original in 3. in fact, the general areas explored in outbreak that appeared in previous games were very true to their original appearances, save for the missing third floor in the RPD in file #2

>>3846307
raccoon city was designed by japanese people who aren't entirely sure what an american city/town looks like, as seen by the sheer amount of alleyways and tiny streets

>>3846328
there's actually quite a lot of interesting things the CG artists for the backgrounds put in

for instance: this capcom coat of arms

there's an RPD bike outside of the warehouse you start in

there's a poster in the alley outside that that mentions capcom

there's also a poster for a "biohazard 4" outside the theater near the restaurant you can meet carlos in

I think the BG artists just liked to fuck around a lot

richard was the radio man for both alpha and bravo teams

rebecca gives chris richard's broken radio, and richard gives jill his broken radio, as richard is the only one with a radio

I don't think wesker had a radio

>>3846350
here's the bio4 poster
>>
>>3846363
>rebecca gives chris richard's broken radio, and richard gives jill his broken radio, as richard is the only one with a radio
Huh, I guess I confused a Barry cutscene with the radio, you're right about Richard now that I think about it.

Then what the hell did Wesker give to Chris? I'm sure he gave him something.
>>
>>3837576
Ive been playing resident evil 2 alot the last few weeks.
You wanna know what i really don't get?
How come the umbrella facility in the last part of the game is fucking huge, when there's literally like 3 small rooms in the place where experiments could've taken place. (as in, rooms which have sceintific equipment in them)

the same goes for resi 1, you have this massive mansion, guardhouse facility, cave complex, and its all to house a lab facility with about 3 rooms in it.
>>
>>3846363
Wesker had a radio
>>
>>3837576
I've always had a problem with it because the timeline between the two characters is retarded and does not match at all.

Actually the entire trilogy's timeline is fucked unless you do Terminator style mental gymnastics. Still my favorite games of all time though.
>>
>>3846367
I think the only interaction chris had with wesker outside entering the mansion was in the guardhouse where he shoots some bees and tells chris there's still locked doors

>>3846375
did he? well I suppose it would make sense for the leader to have a radio

>>3846373
you actually explore a lot more of the facility in the below freezing point in outbreak

and the RE1 lab was probably just a small one for experimenting on the tyrant, among other things

>>3846385
I kind of hope they fix that bit in RE2make because unlocking all the doors that character A unlocked while also doing the same things seems a bit silly
>>
>>3846373
My reasoning is that there's really a ton more rooms you don't check out because they're "locked" or not interesting to the character or some shit; like storerooms or empty medical rooms, whatever.
>>
>>3846403
Yeh, i guess this is the reason.
I wish there was more interaction with that giant plant growing beside the ladder near the end of resi 2.
I just wish flat out there was more resi on PS1. Ive beat every scenario of the original trilogy recently, A-ranking them all (and feeling pretty good about it), but now I'm craving more resi.
i've played the hell out of dino crisis 1 + 2.
I might buy code veronica again, which i've completed a few times, but way preferred the originals.
Can anyone recommend something? ideally that i can emulate on my psp and play today (so ps1 would be good).
>>
>>3846438
again, in outbreak, you do actually have to solve a puzzle regarding that plant beside the ladder although it's just a simpler v-jolt combining puzzle

and for other games like RE that can be emulated on PSP?

in terms of tank control survival horror games I can recommend:

countdown vampires
martian gothic unification
chaos break
overblood
to some extent the fear effect games
koudelka, parasite eve 1+2 if you like jrpg battle systems
soul of the samurai I believe
the alone in the dark games
and probably a handful of others that I can't remember
>>
>>3846438
Try Deep Fear (Saturn) and Countdown Vampires, they're some of the most decents "RE clones". There is also Overblood, Alone In The Dark A New Nightmare.

If you're into the kind of stuff Dino Crisis 2 does (dropping the survival for pure action), you should play Parasite Eve 2 and Vampire Hunter D (just turn off the autolock system, it does anything but help). Also Soul of the Samurai is decent. There is also Deep Freeze but it's Jap only and hard as balls.
>>
>>3846447
Are any of them any good though?
Countdown vampires looks like my cup of tea whats it like? and damn had forgotten about fear effect. wanted to try parasite eve, but dont dig the rpg elements, might still give it a shot.
Pre-rendered backgrounds are certainly a big plus.

ty anon
>>
>>3846457
Countdown Vampires is overall one of the best RE clones. Truth is, there isn't that many good ones, most of them are very flawed or even broken/unfinished. Countdown Vampires is still flawed though, it drops the cake half way through the game, and there was also several rooms in which enemies would instantly jump on you when you enter with no time to react.
>>
>>3846457
countdown vampires is a more fast-paced RE, but health items are a lot harder to come by and the enemies are usually faster

I don't think there's any bonus in knocking out vampires other than taking their money so you can use it to buy health items

martian gothic is a bit rough on the tank controls but what I've played is pretty decent

deep fear for saturn like >>3846452 mentioned is a fairly decent RE clone, down to the first aid sprays being copied

chaos break is like a weird mixture of RE, dino crisis, and little bits of metal gear here and there with all the keycards although I believe it's got 3D backgrounds

I mean, the one major one I missed which should be blatant is obviously silent hill, and there's also RE survivor if you're down for a little awkward FPS gameplay

there's also the first person echo night and hellnight
tecmo's deception/kagero series(which is like a tower defense game more or less except you're brutally murdering home invaders with traps)
the nightmare creatures games
the point n click clock tower games
illbleed, carrier, blue stinger, and the ring for dreamcast
there's also D and D2

and if you really want to continue the RE experience, there's always gaiden for GBC
>>
>>3846367
Remember that Wesker leaves Chris a lot of items and notes. And he fixes the door too, just for you. He warns you about Lisa too, not to go there because she can't be killed. For a guy that wanted to kill Chris, he sure helpes you survive the ordeal
>>
Why can't Jill or Leon or Claire or any of those UBCS mercs pick up the weapons and ammunition from the dead police officers/dead mercenaries littered all across coon city? Also Kendo's gun store, why didn't they looted it clean?
>>
>>3846562

Kendo's gun store was already empty. He gave out weapons to survivors.

Now, the real question is why is there such a disparity between gameplay and story when it comes to how dangerous enemies are.

Game:
>Can clear infinite zombies with a handgun and infinite ammo

Story:
>zombie hoards are unstoppable even for heavily armed groups
>>
>>3846256
i just assume there's a bigger one somewhere else.
i wish outbreak did more, it had a more serious tone with the outbreak that i thought was neat.
https://youtu.be/nweGIIBLqjY?t=13m17s
>>
>>3846540
Gotta test the Tyrant on something.
>>
>>3846570
Name a time in Resident Evil when you are up against an actual horde of zombies and how viable it is to take them ALL down.
>>
>>3846740
I mean, technically speaking you had to fight a massive, unending horde in the end of the first level of outbreak and you had to take them ALL down but that probably doesn't count since all you had to do was get a detonator fixed and then watch the street blow up
>>
>>3846976
I was going to mention that, but I don't think it counts.
Closest thing I think is when you are trapped in a dead end hallway after getting the oil additive.
>>
Why bother with other bioweapons when clearly an army of hunter battlefrogs can do the job
>>
>>3846738
Yeah? What about Jill? She was just rotting inside that jail cell. He never helped Jill in her route either
>>
>>3847530
You can't control them, they're like wild, vicious animals. We need something that can follow clear directions.
>>

>>
>>3847530

Zombies are needed for fodder. They overwhelm locations and act as a distraction so other BOWs can clean up.

>>3847929

Also this.
>>
>>3847929
Why not send human operatives instead? That's what their masked armed personnel and paid mercenaries are for, right?
>>
>>3847947

>trusting humans to do anything right and not let their own motivations get in the way
>>
>>3847947
Those human operatives can stumble upon something hidden while cleaning up. Papers and documents are always all over the place, so who knows what can happen if it falls under some undercover operative or something. Plus, B.O.WS play up the psychological aspects too
>>
>>3847947
>>3847952
>>3847967
they actually fix all that by sending in cleaners, humanoid BOWs that are more or less umbrella's spooks. they go in, murder everyone, blow up the city, and leave if possible. shame they're only used in RE survivor

>>3847530
>>3847929
there ARE hunters that can be controlled but I think the main idea is to just drop a bunch of hunters in a place and get the fuck out of dodge

there are also pseudo-cyborg hunters deployed by the "rival company" that could ambush people via a fancy seeker drone

the BOWs in the series are pretty cool
>>
>>3848341
Yeah, I really liked the bows in earlier games. Re4 somewhat dropped the ball with el gigante and the weird alligator in the lake. My favorite will always be the hunters, they're creepy as shit
>>
>>3837590
> why doesn't mega man kill wily

first rule of robotics
>>
>>3847946

Zombies were byproducts, not the goal. The goal is regenerative engineered soldiers. The Tyrants are what they were making. Now, take that and have it affect a person, and it turns them into a "zombie". They're not actually raised dead, but rather infected.
>>
>>3849826

>They're not actually raised dead, but rather infected.

Except that they die and then come back to life. The infection kills and then reanimates.
>>
>>3849853
people killed by zpmbies do come back, but people who are infected don't automatically die.
anybody who gets infected but survives just starts degrading mentally.

What did Barry mean by this? Were they once lovers? Is he homosexual? Is Chris a homosexual? Is that why they both left the airforce? Is this kind of fraternization allowed by the Racoon Police Department? Do both of their families know about this?

bit of a late response guys, but thanks for posting these. i've written down the names of these games and will check them out soon.

HOWEVER, went to town yesterday and stumbled upon the REmake (gc) for £5 at a pawn shop. Thought it was about time i played this, have always wanted to and have heard some great things.
Only problem was i bought a value pro controller for my wii to play it with, but didnt realize i still needed a remote to plug the pro into.. so going back today to buy a remote.

am so excited.
