Aside from the bandaged up sword, the wing, and the bugle fingers, I think it's an improvement.

I really like Cloud's design in KH1. The torn cloak that kinda covers his mouth like Auron, Vincent's claw-hand, the one-winged devil thing was a neat parallel to Sephiroth, the bandaged sword doesn't make a lot of sense but it does look cool. It's cool aesthetics and the KH-shtick is stuff that looks cool despite being convoluted.
