There were 3 arcades in my city that ever had a darkstalkers game. two were normal arcades, and the last was arcade games in the lobby of a laser tag place.

Virtually all people new to the game (if you hang around arcades you know the "new guy" look. People who stopped and took a long look at the characters, the move set, and the attract mode for like 4-5 minutes) and they all chose the zombie rock star for their first quarter.

Younger gamers wouldn't go near a female character (not felicia, not chun li in SF). it was like some kind of barbie phobia thing that they can't touch girl stuff and it lasts till they are 13-14 or else their friends would make fun of them.

Most older teens playing the series somewhat regularly were fixated with lord raptor (the zombie rock star), Anakaris or Dimitri. Literally any time I played PvP it was against Anakaris. No other character was touched for some reason. Very rarely someone would run Morrigan.

I played felicia because she was a naked catgirl but I was the only one ever to do so in my local arcades the entire time i was there (most weekends) for the history of the game. People were at the arcade at the time to play killer instinct and motal kombat 2 and anime catgirls didn't fit what they were looking for.

In the 90s he was one of the top cheese fighters of the day. People used to more conventional street fighter II strategies really struggled agains a good anakaris player and it was frustrating as fuck.

When the subject of Capcom artists come up, people always talk about Kinu or Bengus or whatever, but they were illustrators who primarily just did promotional art after the games were more or less finished. It was the spriters who actually designed the characters and brought them to life. Which is why it's a shame that aside from Akiman they hardly ever get any recognition.
