Best Non-Nintendo handheld?
>>
Yes.
>>
PSP, nigga.
>>
>We're doing it! We're going to save SNk from bankruptcy! We've got better graphics, it's starting to sell, & we're finally getting some third party support
>What could Nintendo POSSIBLY compete?

I felt so bad for SNK. This handheld had possibly the worst timing in video game history.
>>
>Neo Geo Pocket
LITERALLY playing fighting games by yourself.
Unless by some miracle you find another poor soul with a NGPC and a copy of the game PLUS the extortionately priced game link cable.

$50 isn't that bad by retro game standards. It's no gamecube component cable at least. My main problem is those fucking worm lights. They never pop up on eBay.
>>
>>3825710
Who are you trying to fool, you'll be playing fighters all by yourself like the fucking chode you are.

It has it's parks. Built in horoscope is cool.
>>
>>3825698
there wasn't a time period where it could have really succeeded between like 1996 and 2002
that being said, it was on the market for such a short time entirely because SNK stopped making hardware, rather than it tanking -- in fact, it was picking up in sales when everything fell through

biggest problem it faced is that the people who knew it existed (and there were a fair few) didn't know where to get one -- I wanted an NGPC pretty bad back then and never saw it anywhere available
and then after the GBA came out, the machine was truly doomed, so even if SNK kept making the things and making games, they were in for a world of trouble
>>
>>3825704
This or the nomad.
>>

At least Faselei was decent right?

I only remember it being for sale at Toys R Us.

>>3825756

That's kind of cheating. You're taking the home console games & just making them portable. That's like Calling the Switch a handheld.

I don't really like the sound of that. I'd probably go with Gamegear since it was the only other one I had although I never had much games for it.
>>
>>3825756
I have two Nomads but I still haven't replaced the TG Express my "friend" traded for drugs in high school. I do prefer the Genesis library to the hucard library but compared to the TGExpress/PCE-GT the Nomad is bigger even without its battery pack and the carts don't seat very securely for portable play compared to hucards.

Yeah, it's pretty much just a gimmick to get you to buy certain games on both platforms and unlock stuff faster on both of them.
>>
>>3826793
>Couldn't this connect to the Dreamcast? Did any games use that?

Here's a list of compatible games and what each one did:
http://segaretro.org/Neo_Geo_Pocket/Dreamcast_Setsuzoku_Cable

It wasn't worth it, basically, but it was the precursor to Nintendo's somewhat better GBA-to-GCN cable at least.

It sucked so much being the poor guy in my circle of friends. Between them, they all had 5 NGPCs and I enjoyed playing their games they had for the system. Local EBs all around me had them in stock. People I communicated with online (IRC) kept telling me to get Faselei as they were getting only a single shipment (of about 20) into their stores, and I was still too broke to even buy a single one of those games and didn't even have the system too. I am grateful one of my friends knew I still loved old games and gave me his old NGPC a few months ago. Everyone I knew loved the NeoGeo Pocket Color in its day, I wished I could have joined in at that time. SNK deserved better.

>>3826623
I like your name/trip. I am assuming you're the same anon that mentions that happened to their TurboExpress. That's such a cruel fate to lose a TurboExpress in that manner. At least you have not just one but two Nomads! That's awesome! I'd be happy with just one.

>>3827125
I think the PDP controller for 360 and PS3 also has a similar mechanism. Also that default nasty controller that comes with the Retron5 may as well. Yet somehow the SNK ones feel so much better, I can't explain why.
>>
>>3827125

Is that why half the Neo Geo CD controllers on eBay are broken?
>>
>>3825689

Ps vita > PSP > NG pocket > your nintendo crap
>>
>>3826623
>I do prefer the Genesis library to the hucard library
Yeah that's pretty much my reasoning, the turbo express is much more portable
>>
so is the neo geo pocket color worth buying?
>>
>>3825806
>>
>>3828435

Depends. Hoe much do you like SNK, fighting games, & CAPCOM? cause that's pretty mutch it

Sonic Pocket Adventure
Faselei
Neo Turf Masters
Gal Fighters
SNK vs. Capcom
SNK Vs. CAPCOM Card Fighter Clash

I mean it's good, but It really hinges on how much of a fighting game fan you are. I love it, but mostly for how great the Pac-Man game is on it.
>>
>>3825689
I forgot this existed. What good games were even on this?
>>
>>3826793
A few did.

Ironically, Sonic Pocket Adventure can't interact with any Sonic game on Dreamcast. You would think that would be the one thing the cable did, maybe something like the Tiny Chao Garden in Advance, but nope.

Fairly mass produced, not region locked, small software library, not really part of the 'retro bubble'. All of it helps prices. I'm still pissed I didn't have $50 or whatever in like 2005 to buy the blister packs they sold at Electronics Boutique with a NGPC and like 5 games brand new. Such was being a middle schooler or whatever.

Only tangentially related to this thread and /vr/ but there is a new fighting game called Pocket Rumble that is supposed to be a spiritual successor to Neo Geo Pocket Color fighting games like MVC MOTM (similar graphics and controls)
>>

Pocket Rumble has been in Steam Early Access for a year, it's currently "mostly done" and has had netplay since its initial launch

same, same, although at that time wal-marts had the sonic bundle for 20 new so i went with that and never winded up getting any other games for it. it's a damn nice system though. i should get some more games now that im not a poorfag

I sold my NGPC a while ago (with very few regrets as I played the shit out of it) but desu I don't think I want to deal with a non-lit screen anymore so I'm just gonna emulate it on my 3DS.

since we got a thread up I had a question. I jiust got a pocket color and I know the system itself is region free but are any of the JP fighting games in English like KOFr2 for example.

It's not really a huge deal or anything but CIB Japanese games are way cheaper and I remember a few AES carts had both languages
>>
>>3832714

Some are, some aren't. Most Pocket color games contain both english & Japanese language files & swap between them depending on what language setting the system is set to, but some of the larger games like Faselei only contain one language due to the size of the rom. Other games were simply never released in english like Neo Poke Kun.

to the fucking point: Some have both languages on the cart, some don't. Look it up on a per game basis.
>>
>>3832714
All of the fighting games save the black and white releases came out in English and a few games that were Japan-only got fan translations (most notably SvC Card Fighter 2), I don't believe the system has region lock either way
>>
>>3832758

well, what Im asking is if the JP cart has English text because they're cheaper and sometimes they do.
>>
>>3832770
>and sometimes they do.

You just answered your own question. The easiest way to check would be to load up a Japanese rom of a game on an emulator & switch language settings to see if that particular game switches to english.
>>
>>3825689
Wonderswan honesty was pretty good as well.
>>
>>3832819
It had a Klonoa game and a Ghost and Goblins as well.
Plus a fuckton of Digimon games that were part of the franchise's canon timeline, how the fuck could you NOT like that handheld?
>>
This is the only reason to own a wonderswan.
>>
>>3825689
I love this thing.

King of Fighters R-2, Samurai Showdown 2, Puzzle Bobble and Pocket Reversi are my go to games.

Especially King of Fighters R2. Tons of content in that little game. You could customise a fighter with a bunch of equipment that would change your stats and sometimes give you extra moves.

Like a fucking gun. You could pull out a gun and shoot your opponent in the face. In a KOF game.

Samurai Showdown 2 had slash and burst mode characters that played differently and cards you could earn and equip that added extra moves and stats.
>>
>>3834182
>Like a fucking gun. You could pull out a gun and shoot your opponent in the face. In a KOF game.
Whip in Gals' Fighters has that as her regular attack. Just pulls out a gun and can fire at the opponent repeatedly. No wonder she was made the sub-boss.
>>
>>3834239
Everything about those SNK fighters were recycled from each other when you analyse it.

>>3834182

Like the game though. Hoping the DLC crew ends up being someone cool.
>>
>>3834250

It's surprising what they accomplished. If it has a backlight it may have lasted even longer. I'm surprised the system was under $100 all things considered, but I guess they were keeping costs down due to going bankrupt soon after.
>>
>>3834250
Sure, but they all had unique mechanics and single llayer content, as well as different game speeds. The art was definitely recycled, but that is always what snk has done.

Turbo expeess
>>
>>3834250
Well, of course they were. That was SNK's style. Still, you were getting an extremely authentic SNK experience on a pocket handheld, long before you got the same thing for Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat. And they acted as predecessors for Match of the Millennium, which was even better. Derivative certainly, but still a great collective of games.

>>
>>3834697
in '99, none of the hardware in the NGPC would have made it that expensive, the machine is in the ballpark of (if a fair bit more powerful than) a GBC -- similar video, faster CPU, 2 PSGs.
also, nothing would have saved the NGPC simply because the only reason they stopped when they did was Aruze shutting things down and just casually allowing SNK to fall apart -- if SNK hadn't fucked up the Hyper Neo-Geo 64 (also, if arcades weren't fading away in not-Japan), they wouldn't have had to suffer the Aruze buyout

>>3834250
they play surprisingly differently despite looking damn near interchangeable
but they're all busted as shit because they never had location testing or anything (really, go look up KOF R-2 or Gals Fighters combos, they're kind of retarded)

>>3832758
There's actually a few B/W releases with English on the cart, like KOF R-1.

>>
>>3830375
>>3830753

I just tested a handful of games today on RetroArch 1.4.1 and noticed a little slowdown on Baseball Stars (went down to 50 fps) but that was really it. SNK vs. Capcom ran perfectly. That mech strategy RPG (forgetting the name now) ran at 70 FPS when upcapped.

This is on a N3DS, regular one probably won't get full speed.

I didn't have much fun though to be honest. I played the shit out of all the games I liked as a kid that there isn't anything left in the library that interests me. SNK vs. Capcom is still fun though. I didn't have much interest in the other fighting games as SNK vs. Capcom was always more fun and deep.
