I have used CCS64 and it's fine I guess.

Talking about c64 roms, I have yet to see one in action. Load errors are what I miss anyhow.

So, what's the best software SID emulator?
Like half the links on HVSC are dead.

I use Sidplay, but it crashes on occasion.

Use vsid -- it comes with VICE.

They aren't even the same thing.
One reads SID files and plays them on an emulated MOS6581, the other is a VST the emulates a SID, but can only accept commands from a DAW, like Logic Pro, or FL Studio.

I know, I have it. It wasn't immediately apparent to me that you were trying to play SID files and not just play the SID itself.

I like Frodo, which I use on an android tablet. You never said what hardware you'd be using.

Frodo loads virtual floppies great and I can play Impossible Mission to completion with no issues.

I use regular sidplay2, which works fine, but I recommended jsidplay2 because it's what Kuokka77 (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJKt_QVDyUbqdm3ag_py2eQ) uses and it supposedly has more up to date filters than sidplay2 on top of being able to play 2sid files.

was dealing with but iirc most C64 games uploaded online (ie ones you'd download and play via a sd2iec) bare PAL versions, thus incompatible with NTSC Commodore 64s. Keep that in mind if you're in the U.S.

Yup, I was planning on getting a PAL model.
SID tunes just don't sound right on a NTSC C64.
