Wouldn't it be a lot better if they were like \ or --- way instead? They could even be like this -_- or _-_ for three button controllers.

The way that controller is it does not naturally align with your thumb.

See this picture? Notice how the N64 controller got the primary action buttons correct? If A and B were positioned like where the X is shown then it would be bad button positioning.
