Great choice. However, I cannot choose a favorite game in the shooting game genre. There's always something I am currently playing, and a lot of them have something I really enjoy about the game. For the R-type games I really like how technical they are (to me at least). I used an old pic, I have the SNES ones as well, but I really desire getting the TurboGrafx-16 Turbochip original R-type (and I sure cannot afford the Pulstar and Blazing Star).

Everyone seems to enjoy Boomerang, whereas I favored 2. I think my issue was that they split up the two characters into 3 variations (instead of them all combined into one as 2 had it). Boomerang was still fun to me as a "Championship Edition" release which was cheaper on Saturn.

Despite all the Genesis/Mega Drive hate on /vr/, I think this looks and sounds amazing. Appears to be R-type technical to me as well.
Confession:even to this day, the second half of stage 2 wrecks my anus from all those tight spaces
>>3811597
R-Type Delta is my fav. The Cerberus ending and the call back to it in Final are some of my fav shmup memories.R-Type 3 is second best R-Type
>>3811597
Salamander, thunder force 3/4, and border down are my favorites
In general, horizontal > vertical for me
Why is hori objectively superior to verti?
>>3812360
For me, it's because hori typically has level design (like, solid objects that you have to navigate around that form a coherent theme throughout a level) while vert usually just throws 10,000 bullets at you while you fly through a featureless void. Seems lazier even though in a lot of cases the verts are more challenging overall.
Horizontal is more fun in a traditional way, while at least part of the appeal of verts is the e-peen meme difficulty bullshit.
>>3812375
Some have good level design like Axelay (granted that it's both)
>>3812360
Vert is so shitty
>>3812375
While I admit that hori has more possibilities, I find vert more fun, I don't know exactly why, maybe walls of bullets are more exciting than fewer bullets and (annoying) real walls blocking your way.
>>3811597
Some Compile or Hudson shmup, depending on which side of the bed I wake up on.
>>3812429
Axelay's top down levels would get been really good without the mode 7 stuff. The fact that the solid objects have no 3d depth to them can make it difficult to tell what will kill you if you run into it or not. But yeah Axelay's vertical levels are closers to my ideal.
The two big Treasure games that everyone jerks off to have pretty decent level design vert shmups too, I just really fucking hate the scoring system in both. I've always thought that section in that 3rd level of Ikaruga where that fleet of ships start overtaking you from behind and you have to weave around them, in particular, is cool as fuck
>>3812360
Hori just has better level design for me, Verti often has environmental destruction though, which gives me a big boner, one big reason why I still replay Raptor to this day, destroying buildings feels just too good for me in that game, despite being a floaty euroshmup.
I prefer hori but verti's not all bad.

God, Bio Hazard Battle is so cool. I haven't seen any other Genesis game quite like it, and the music is phenomenal.
does psyvariar 2 count as a shmup?
>>3812336
Nice games, anon.
>>3811597
Lightening Force
>>3815123
>does psyvariar 2 count as a shmup?
of course you fucking idiot.
>>3812360
because you are a pleb
There is only Ketsui.
I lol at console exclusive shmups.
Fucksakes /vr/. Everyone knows Armed Police Batrider is objectively the best shmup ever made and not a single one of you has mentioned it.
I thought you were better than this.
>>3817154
garegga is better, batrider is a clusterfuck
>>3817870
ALL the yagawa games are clusterfucks though
>>3817879

Hmm...
>>3817905
>le slowdown meme XD
>>3817951
get the fuck off my board you wikipedia sipping kiddie
>>3817964
>fuck off my board
--->/v/
>>3817902
Garegga has its flaw but it's a clean game overall imo
>>3811597
my favorite is actually RayForce
also, R-Type Delta is pretty great, but if I'm looking for a good hori, I'll usually pick G-Darius first, what a fucking standout game
>>3812486
I really wish Radiant Silvergun's scoring wasn't wholly obnoxious. It's the opposite of fun, and you can't survive in Silvergun without it.
In contrast, chaining in Ikaruga is loads of fun, and it's not necessary to survive.
>>3817963
it's a fine port, but the arcade board is literally a faster PS1 and the game isn't really altered to match, leading to the slowdown
there's a fairly good version in Taito Memories 2 on PS2 without slowdown
shouldn't matter for a lot of the people who complain since they tend to get their teeth kicked in anyway by the game, even with the help of it running slower most of the time
>>3811597
Darius Gaiden
Zanac
>>3820893
Compile shmups were boring and rehashy.
Liked R-Type Leo the most in that series.
But my favorite SHUMP is Darius. Dat 4:1 aspect ratio...
As for dedicated console SHUMPS (not arcade ports), give me Blazing Lasers every time.
Yes, it's a vertical SHUMP. No, I do not GAF.
>>3820936
don't take the horibabies too seriously, most of them are shit players that haven't even multilooped gradius anyway
