I know I'm really late to this one. I never owned an N64 growing up. For some reason, I've never really gone back through its library, preferring the PSX and Saturn.
Well, I finally finished Super Mario 64. I'm probably reiterating decades of praise, but this is really one of the most remarkable games I've ever played. Mario still controls beautifully. The amount of care and thought put into each of the courses is astonishing. The game is a triumph of design and imagination.
It's probably easy to criticize parts of this game just because they were so new at the time, but I went into this game without any pretenses. The camera isn't perfect, and not every course is flawless (Dire Dire Docks is a bit of a stinker), but those things seem like such nitpicking considering that this game came out in 1996.
Since it's so easy to talk about how influential/innovative/etc. this game is, what is some weird shit that most people wouldn't know about the game?

It's the only good game on the N64. Quit now.

Swim around that star statue in the back courtyard 64 times to unlock Luigi.

Good for you.
The 64 library is incredible, you should keep going through it.

This. I've done it on my cousin's French N64 only a couple of times. It resets when you turn it off.
It's funny how everyone says it's a myth, when it's not. All French models (I think) have a chip in it which allows you to do it.

Not sure if mocking the tiny library

Wow, a PS / Sega / PC player *actually plays* nintendo games and actually praises them.
Good on you. Would be nice if more people did that. Most people who shit on N64 haven't even played it.

If you want similar games, Rare has a trilogy of collection platformers on the system: Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, and Donkey Kong 64.There's also Gex 64 and Gex 3, but those are multiplat games - you might have played them on PSX already

I've never met a person who shat on the N64. As a kid I had the PS and was so envious of my neighbour who had the N64, I used to go round all the time to play it
